In other words, we just need someone to hand the ball off?

 Huh?

Quote
If anything, Alabama's recent history under head coach Nick Saban has shown that defense is the pavement on which national championship runs are constructed. If the Tide want to get back to a national championship game in 2015-16, their defensive line is going to be position group that gets them there.

If there's anything CPPB taught us it's that you win big games starting with D and the kicking game.  But this article is too dismissive of the importance of the QB position.  A decent QB is vital to having an O that can both score points AND run up time of possession.  One way of stopping he opponent's O is to keep the ball away from them.

Bama's championship runs under Saban included a stout defense, smart error-free QB play, and perhaps the most dominant offensive line in college football history.

That was the winning formula.

But times change, dynamics change, players change.

Without the dominant offensive line, the running game stalls.  Without error-free QB play, multiple turnovers in a single game could easily lead to a loss.

And as for the defense, even during those times, Bama's D got burned by certain types of offense, like Utah, Oklahoma, the Auburn.

===========================

But I don't think the article is saying "just hand the ball off."  Mostly it is praising the depth and strength of Bama's D-line, and saying they could pave the way to a championship.

By the way, they are saying Bama has the toughest schedule in college football this year.

Perhaps the toughest group of opponents of the Saban era.  Not quite the scheduling sham of 2010, though, when Bama played 6 straight SEC opponents coming off a bye week.

Here's my two cents. John Parker Wilson was a mediocre QB and Bama went undefeated in the regular season and made it to the SEC champ game. Greg McElroy was a mediocre QB and Bama went undefeated, won an SEC title and a national title. AJ Mccarron was an above average QB and Bama never went undefeated but they won 1 SEC title and two national titles. Blake Sims was an average QB and Bama won an SEC title and made the first ever college football playoff. Even though the game has changed you can still win championships with outstanding defense and a dominant run game. The QB just needs to be smart, something that is true of Mcelroy, Mccarron, and Sims. So I don't care if Coker or Cornwell takes the reins, as long as they are smart. It doesn't matter how strong their arm is or how perfect their spirals are, as long as they make good decisions. Look at the best QBs in the NFL; Brady, the Mannings, Rodgers, Brees, Ryan; how many NCAA titles did they win? None. The college game is so different from the NFL, we need to stop applying NFL principles to college football. You don't have to have a dynamic QB to win a college title. Sure it helps, but it's not required. In college it's still defense that wins championships.

I must agree here with the defense BUT, I think the kicking game has to always be included. The kicking game is the intangible that keeps the other team driving 80 and 90 yards as opposed to 45 or 50 yards. FG kickers have also won big games with no time on the clock if they can hit that 45 to 55 yarder on that last play. RTR!

You're right, Ricky, the kicking game is important. Punting is outstanding this year and hopefully FG kicking will be much improved. But I would really like to see special teams be good this year, especially on coverage. Last few years our coverage teams have been average. Good plays one time, bad plays the next. We need more consistency. I want our special teams to be as good as Va Tech's when they were the best in the country on coverages and returns. I think Bobby Williams is a liability, personally.

I think this is one of the biggest problems we have on our team as you think. CNS though for some reason continues to believe in him. When he took over at MSU when CNS left he didn't win and they got worse till he got fired I believe. I will have to find a link on this. RTR!

I've been saying this for YEARS & usually some of the posters get mad at me. Oh well.
