ESPN Writer Ivan Maisel Tragedy

I can not imagine his loss. Sad. Ivan Maisel is from Alabama.

The body found Friday in Lake Ontario is that of Rochester Institute of Technology student Max Maisel, 21, who had been missing since Feb. 22 and was last seen around the Charlotte Pier.

You might find this shocking, but Ivan said he believes his son committed suicide. That was his belief, not a finding by the police, as of yet. Ivan must be aware of some problems his son had. Like I said, I can not imagine the grief.

I suspected that, but that is a really strange way to do it.  And apparently he didn't leave a note, or want them to find his body.  It sounds like he hated his parents or something and wanted to cause them as much pain as he could on his way out of this world.

Max was a black-and-white person in a gray world. He came up in a family of Alabama Crimson Tiders, so he was trained by three generations to feel a certain way about Alabama’s archrival. Now, I must tell you my line of work takes me to Auburn regularly, and I have friendships there that have developed over my 30 years of covering college football. But that was a subtlety that escaped our 12-year-old son. I once introduced the Sports Information Director to Max, as “my friend from Auburn, Kirk Sampson,” to which Max reflexively replied, “But, Dad — you hate Auburn!”

He was taught well.

It's always tough to lose a fellow Bama fan.

After reading that I realize that I misjudged the situation.  I don't think he hated his parents, he just wanted to quietly slip away unnoticed.  It's a sad, sad story.
