On the Beat: Let's be honest, we were wrong about Blake Sims
Few predicted it, but Blake Sims more than won the Alabama quarterback competition.

It's not easy being wrong ― even harder when you thought you knew it all. But it's time to man up, and I suspect there are a few out there in the same boat.

We're not perfect.

Blake Sims proved it.

And after seven games of the 2014 season, it would be wrong to move forward without addressing this. It was a foregone conclusion when practice started Aug. 1 that Sims would eventually slip to the No. 2 quarterback job. Picking against Florida State transfer Jacob Coker didn't seem feasible.

Yet, there are still some that think Coker should be the guy.

Lots of people hateful and in denial.  They even argue about their pick-'em losses ("I would have gotten 6 right if that idiot ...").
I admit, I had no idea that Blake Sims could run the offense and play with such consistency.

Now, this thread will fill with, "If the DBs could catch, Sims would have # interceptions and only # TDs..."...

Anyone who saw the A-Day game in the Spring had doubts about Sims. Maybe we should listen to CNS. He said after A-Day Sims had a bad game but he had proven in practice he is much better than that.

He has made a believer out of me.

Too many people in our fan base expect our QB to be perfect. We've never had a perfect QB; not AJ, not Namath, not Stabler, not anyone. Blake is our best QB option, hands down. He brings things to our offense that nobody else can. He is elusive, and actually quite accurate. He is very good at rolling out and finding a receiver, or running with the ball if necessary.

Coker has talent, but has some glaring weaknesses. He's much less accurate than Blake, has a much slower release, and is not nearly as elusive. I look for him to probably be our guy next year, but for now, we've got the right starting QB.

I remember a certain Alabama QB throwing the ball out of bounds to stop the clock on 4th down!  True.

BS has been better than I expected, but.....  still no good games against a good defense and no good performances on the road. Namath, Stabler & AJ won championships, I'm not ready to put him in that company yet.

Woah Koko, I wasn't putting him in that company either.

I was merely describing what some of our fans expect from all of our QBs. Until he wins a natty, I wouldn't even put him up there with Jay Barker or GMAC.

It is true that no one should have been comfortable with Sims after A-Day. But neither should anyone have been comfortable with Coker. He threw every ball on a rope, and that leads to batted balls. I saw no evidence of touch. Sims stared his receivers down to the point where I thought I might be able to leap out of the stands and get a pick.

The point is that given neither of them looked much good, what was the underlying cause of the tremendous support that Coker received as the heir apparent?

It was unrealistic to think Coker could come into a new program without spring practice and win the starting job. However, that did not stop Bama fans and the national media from anointing him the heir apparent to AJ. Some media even listed him as a preseason Heisman candidate.

I do not know anyone who still thinks Coker is a better fit for our team right now than Sims. I was at the Florida game when Sims got hurt. 101,000 fans were silent as Sims was walked off the field. The biggest cheer of the day was when he re-entered the game and that was after Coker threw a much needed TD pass.

Like it or not this is Sims team. I think everyone likes it at this point.

I was one of those that thought Sims couldn't do the job and I was wrong, but I can tell you I was pulling for him when CNS started him. CNS knows a lot more about who should start and who shouldn't, that's why he's the coach and I'm the fan.
