I think we have to give the players their due. It's THEIR image & THEIR autograph. I have no idea why the NCAA prohibits this. I'm trying to think of why this would be a bad thing.

I think it may let certain boosters pay for these and pay more than they are really worth.  I don't know if this is the reason or not.

I wouldn't have a problem with it, if it were allowed.  But since it is not allowed, I have a problem with some players doing it anyway while others abide by the rules.

Yeah, they know boosters will get out of control plus they think it will give the big schools a huge recruiting advantage. How much is a jersey worn by a Vandy player going to fetch compared to Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, Ohio State, etc?

I wouldn't mind them selling autographs and pictures personally but I think that money should be held in a trust until after they "graduate" with their degree.  Leave early for the NFL then the money stays in the trust until you...wait for it... graduate with your degree.  The whole idea is a very slippery slope though.  There will always be boosters/players/fans that will try and skirt the rules that would be a violation of the player's "amateur" status regardless of what the rules are...

Let them get paid.

Then, if they are, they must pay for classes, books, parking, food, coaching, medical expenses, and build their own stadium.  How's that?

That is actually a good idea.  Let them be treated just like a regular student.  If they want a scholarship then they earn it academically...or they just don't get paid and get a athletic scholly...

I have been an advocate of eliminating all athletic scholarships and making all scholarships academic need-based only

This would help make that a reality.

That being said.

A player should be able to profit from his likeness/image/signature/work/etc.

An English major does not lose their scholarship b/c they sell a book.

An Art major does not lose their scholarship b/c they sell a painting.

The university is profiting from the players, and the players (many form low income families) should be able to profit.

The problems associated with this are limitless.

The biggest problem would be the inability to control student-athlete contact with buyers/payors.

You could also get into a situation where universities start competing for players by offering different percentages from profits gained.

The players would need some type of investment account that they could draw from when needed and that they would take with them when they leave.  The athletic department would need to employ financial planners/managers to assist the players with investing and to insure that all transactions are in the players best interests.

What people do not think about is that this would flood the market with memorabilia and autographs.  Supply would way out pace demand and the prices would drop like lead balloons.  Of course, with proper management a player could maximize his profits by restricting supply and increasing price.

I also like this idea.  Why are we smarter than the NCAA?

I like it.  The NFL should start building their own stadiums too.  Laughing

Ideas:

1.  Set up a certain time they can sign.
2.  The price paid can not exceed a certain amount.
3.  The money is put in a trust until the player leaves the school
4.  Maybe a limit on how many items may be signed a year.
