Wow. Not only did Mack Brown leave Coach Strong with very little talent, but apparently a team of misfits & malcontents.

Quote
Texas senior running back Joe Bergeron and senior safety Josh Turner became the third and fourth Longhorns players dismissed from the team in the last two days, according to multiple reports.
Bergeron, who has rushed for 1,392 yards and 25 TD in his career, and Turner, who played in all 12 games last season, join backup running back Jalen Overstreet and defensive back Chevoski Collins, who were dismissed Thursday, according to reports.

If it was a good situation Mac Brown would still be coach. Strong needs a year at least to get things headed in the right direction. Coach Saban barely made a bowl and finished 7-6 his first year. He did some house cleaning too.

Texas is too good of a program to be down long. Strong, even in his first year, is on a short leash. He better gets things turned around quick and I think he will. Texas should have put Mac Brown out to pasture several years ago.

Another example of misplaced loyalty and not looking at a situation will clear eyes & brain. It will take Texas 3 years to get it going, again. However, is Strong the right man for the job at Texas? Does he have the personality to glad-hand the big time alumni, eat lunch, and have photos with all those big shots?

No matter how talented Strong is as a coach, I don't see him being successful at UT.  No way they accept him.

He has the chance to be successful there, maybe, maybe not. But I'm not sure he will be happy there.

The "powers to be" at Texas seem to be very "old school" and it will be interesting to see what happens there.

If he makes playoffs in 3 yrs, wins NC within 5 yrs, he probably gets to stay a little longer IMO. If not, they'll be holding fund raisers to raise the 150 million to try and get CNS.

Saban did some house cleaning, had a tough first year, then made his presence known in year two.

Strong likely has inherited more talent at Texas than Saban did at Bama.  Texas had no scholarship limits, and they recruited supposedly top classes. So while this year might be tough with new coaches and a new system, we should see improvement by next year.

I think Strong's happiness at Texas will depend on results.  It he is successful, then everyone will love him.  If not, then he's toast.  Considering how many years of mediocrity Texas tolerated with CMB, they should cut Strong some slack for a couple of years.  All he needs to do by year two is show improvement and be in the hunt for the conference title.

I'm not so sure about this "old school powers" thing.  Yeah, every school has donors, and big donors with lots of money are usually older.  Older folks with money can be more set in their ways and more vocal about it.  But Texas is a huge school compared to Bama,  with a lot more alumni.  And Austin is a progressive town compared to Tuscaloosa, with a hip music scene.  Perhaps UT's biggest donor is a personal injury lawyer, Joseph Dahr Jamail, Jr., son of Lebanese parents.  He made his fortune taking on Texas' old school.  Here's one of many links about him:  Click here for link

1) Saying Strong has more talent than when Saban arrived is like saying Alaska is a little bit colder than Florida. We had that disaster called Shula, plus probation.

2) In 2013 Rivals ranked Texas recruiting class at #20, in 2014 at #24. In 2012 it was #2 but several of those recruits have been shown the door.

3) I don't have a clue to how having a hip music scene affects football, recruiting, or alumni. Alumni come from all over the state and the country for that matter. The same alumni who were talking a $100 mil for Saban or not going to be happy with Strong unless he wins big, fast. The biggest plus for Texas is being in a conference with only 2 really solid programs, Oklahoma & Baylor & no championship game. Okie State can be good to average and Kansas State can cause problems but they are coached by a soon-to-be 75 year old coach. When he first retired, the program returned to its usual incompetence and then he came back. How much longer can he hold it together?

1 and 2.  OK, so I'm the master of understatement.  Bottom line is that Strong probably has a hodgepodge of talent, not recruited for his system or perhaps any system, but talent nonetheless.

3.  True, Texas is a huge state with varied interests.  I always felt Strong was overrated at Louisville.  While the Big 12 isn't the SEC, it isn't the Big East either.  And Strong is no Saban -- he's an Urban Meyer coordinator.  I don't know if he will be successful there.
