Are Ole Miss and Mississippi State "dead weight" to the SEC?

That's what Orlando Sentinel columnist Mike Bianchi suggested in a recent column, claiming that the conference would do itself a favor by jettisoning the Rebels and Bulldogs and adding Central Florida and South Florida instead.

An excerpt:

Let's face it, the only reason Ole Miss and Mississippi State are part of SEC today is that they happened to be at the right place at the right time 100 years ago when the conference was formed while UCF and USF weren't.

Another unknown reporter trying to get some attention. Not saying he has a point, but does the Big Ten then jettison Minnesota, Indiana, Purdue, Northwestern, etc.? Oregon State, Cal, Arizona State in PAC 12? Amamzing, UCF wins one major bowl game and now think they are a national power. Amazing arrogance.

And then there's O'Leary comparing the Power 5 to the Confederacy. I'm not sure who is a bigger idiot, the writer or O'Leary. I get that O'Leary would like for his program to be in a better light, and the writer is just trying to create some controversy in the off-sesaon. But going down those roads makes them both look stupid.

Ole Miss and Vandy are in the CWS. The only SEC teams to get there. There has been talk of dropping one or both of them for years. They are both solid sports programs although neither is a football power. The same can be said for Miss State. Every conference has to have a top, middle and lower tier. The SEC is no different.

Ole Miss was once a football power. In the late 60's & 70's they did not accept integration and hung on to their racist roots with the Rebel Flag and Colonel Reb for too long. They are still suffer from their stubbornness.

Maybe UCF would like to schedule a home & home series with Bama.  Would help fill our sched and add strength.

And since I live 80 mins from Orlando I'd love it!!

Since they are such a "major" power and play a nothing schedule, they need to schedule at least 2 teams from this list:

Alabama
Georgia
LSU
Oregon
UCLA
Clemson
Oklahoma
Texas
Baylor
Ohio State

Their biggest games this year are Penn State, Missouri, & BYU. Whoopee.

UCF would be just like TCU, Utah and BYU. Once they join a major conference they will be middle of the pack at best. It is easy to beat up the cupcakes and get up for 1 or 2 games a year. It is very different when you have "real" games every week.

Is this the same person who pitched such a rift against CNS when he left the Dolphins to come here? RTR!

Good post pmull.  If this writer looks only at the football programs, then Kentucky should be added to his "dump list", but who in their right mind would not recognize the value of Kentucky's National Championship caliber basketball program as an asset to the conference.  Seems that some people can't see beyond football.

Excellent points. TCU has gone from titan to average after joining the Big 12, which ain't exactly the SEC or PAC-12. BYU is independent and lost 5 games after playing mighty programs like:

Utah
Virginia
Texas
Nevada
Ga. Tech
Idaho St.
Houston
Utah St.

BYU announced today they would love to join the Big 12.

You are right on 2, O'Leary and all those like him should never get the chance to taste the success of the Southeastern Conference. After lying on his resume at Notre Dame, you would think that O'Leary would have grown up a little but that doesn't seem to be the case at all. Bianchi is no more than a Finebaum "wannabe" and that will never happen.

UCF, USF, aren't those schools players go to when they can't qualify academically elsewhere?  Not the type of schools that would interest the SEC.

If anyone doubts that, they can ask UConn. Between Men's and Women's, they have 10 championships in the past ten years. They can't beg their way into the acc or big 10.
