Bama Sports Report - An Alabama Crimson Tide Blog
Practice Report March 21: Spring #1 Written by nxojkt | 22 March 2011

link

Thorough report includes injury/suspension info on Mark Barron, Robby Green, Nick Perry and Jarrick Williams, Jonathan Atchison.

Kendall Kelly, Wesley Neighbors, and Kerry Murphy were all absent from workouts. Rumors have swirled around Tuscaloosa that all three players could be candidates for medical hardship. The practice marked the first for nine new Tide players:

Performance comments on WR Ronald Carswell, LB Trey DePriest, DL Quinton Dial, OT Aaron Douglas, QB Phillip Ely, RB Demetrius Hart,  DL Wilson Love, LB/S Vinnie Sunseri, DL Jesse Williams.

Also making their debut were three new position coaches - Mike Groh (WR), Chris Rumph (DL), and Jeff Stoutland (OL). It will take a few practices to get a feel for how each guy fits into the coaching staff as a whole, but there was certainly a lot of intensity from these guys - not Sal Sunseri or Scott Cochran intensity, but not many people can reach that level.

Personnel moves:  QB battles and B. Sims move to QB; Tyler Love has moved to center; Antony Orr to Jack LB; Ed Stinson to DE

"You can't tell much from one practice, especially one without pads, but it looks like McCarron has stepped into a leadership role. He doesn't have the same consistency in technique as Sims, but his attitude and leadership will be big factors. Both guys have fantastic arms, and are pocket passers. So this won't be an issue of the staff deciding which guy to tailor the offense around. They will likely be expected to run the offense the same way, and whoever makes the least mistakes will win the job. Don't be surprised if no starter is named until two weeks before the first game.

Bama will have the next two days off before practicing again in helmets and jerseys on Thursday. We'll have our normal report."

The Alabama men's basketball team solved its outside shooting problems in the second half of its Monday night game against New Mexico in the National Invitational Tournament.

Mainly, it stopped shooting from outside. Not entirely, with three 3-point baskets, but enough to pull away from the Lobos for a 74-67 win that puts the Crimson Tide into a quarterfinal matchup against the Miami Hurricanes on Wednesday night.

After a foul-plagued first half, the Crimson Tide shot 75 percent (15 of 20) in the second half and held off a late New Mexico flurry that netted 14 points in the final 2:51.

Tony Mitchell had 23 points, including three crowd-pleasing dunks in the second half, and freshman point guard Trevor Releford equalled his career high with 20 points.

Trevor Releford's speedy drives, Tony Mitchell's high-flying dunks and an effective dose of full-court pressure kept Alabama alive in the National Invitation Tournament.

Mitchell scored 23 points and Releford matched his career-high with 20 to lead the Crimson Tide to a 74-67 win over New Mexico Monday night in the second round of the NIT.

The Tide (23-11), mostly known for its defense, made 15 of 20 shots in the second half to move into the quarterfinals. Alabama will host Miami on Wednesday night, aiming for its sixth trip to the NIT final four at Madison Square Garden.

"I think our guys are excited to still have an opportunity to continue to play and continue to try to play for a championship," Tide coach Anthony Grant said.

Day 1 Practice Notes
Quote
There were a few new faces and a lot more older ones. Here are the quick first impressions.

■Mark Barron was on the field with the defensive backs a day after his arrest in Mobile. He was wearing a block non-contact jersey and didn’t appear to be doing a whole lot after tearing his pectoral in November.
■With three new assistant coaches, the first few periods looked a lot different than in the past. Linebackers coach Sal Sunseri jumped on new defensive line coach Chris Rumph when the two units got too close to each other during the media viewing period.
■It’s hard to make inferences from the first practice of the spring, but the JUCO transfers were playing a few different places. Defensive lineman Jesse Williams was at end during the drills and offensive lineman Aaron Douglas appeared to be drilling at a few different spots.
■There was a huge group of media on hand with a bunch of faces I didn’t recognize. It’s football season again in Alabama, but when does it really end?

Aaron Douglas video

Quote
Here’s a quick look at JUCO transfer Aaron Douglas (No. 77). He’s considered the front-runner to take James Carpenter’s job at left tackle. As you can see, he’s not quite Carpenter’s size. The roster lists Douglas at 6-foot-7, 275 pounds. Carpenter was 6-5, 300 pounds. More video coming.

New OL Coach adds energy
Jeff Stoutland is new and full of energy. The freshly-hired offensive line coach brings a different feel to the Crimson Tide practice field. See so for yourself. More videos coming later.

Additional notes from From Micahel Casagrande blog:
Quote
Nick Saban wrapped up his news conference a little bit ago. Here are the highlights.

■Defensive back Robby Green was not on the field this afternoon serving a suspension for violating team rules. This appears to be separate from the NCAA-mandated suspension that took him out of action all of last season.
■About Mark Barron’s arrest on misdemeanor charges of hindering prosecution, Saban said the following:
“Mark Barron used poor judgment in sorta protecting his friend, his cousin, rather than cooperating with authority and giving them the information they needed to investigate their case. We always think our players should respect people that are in a position of authority ― especially the police who do a lot to protect all of us. I think Mark learned that he did not use good judgment in this case and not saying what he could have said.”
■The issues surrounding Barron and Green were not going to be discussed in public after Monday, Saban said.

Alabama opened spring practice trying to replace three stars who left early for the NFL and quarterback Greg McElroy while also dealing with off-the-field issues involving two safeties.

The Crimson Tide held its first practice Monday, a day after the arrest of All-American and team captain Mark Barron on a misdemeanor charge of hindering prosecution.

Coach Nick Saban said Barron "used poor judgment" in trying to protect someone else.

"I think Mark learned that he did not use good judgment in this case, in not saying what he could have said to help the police," Saban said.

Robby Green, who missed last season on NCAA suspension for unspecified issues, is now suspended for violating team rules. Saban said any disciplinary action taken against both players will be handled internally and not made public.

Coach Rumph is getting the D focused

Quote
TUSCALOOSA – New Alabama defensive line coach Chris Rumph didn’t like what he was seeing from his unit when the Crimson Tide opened spring practice on Monday.

He stopped a drill, made the group do up-and-downs in place, then they repeated the drill.

Dont’a Hightower noticed Rumph’s actions.

“Sometimes you need a kick in the butt when you’re not doing the right thing,” the linebacker shrugged.

Hightower noticed something else, too.

“After the up-downs, I feel like things kind of changed,” the junior linebacker said. “Practice went a lot more smoothly, a lot more high-temp, a lot more intensity."

...

Hightower said it was good to be back on the field. He added it was even better to see a lot of familiar faces on defense. Last year, Alabama returned just two defensive starters.

“This defense is going to be back to what it needs to be,” Hightower declared. “It was a little tough last year having new faces. Lot of similar faces this year. Lot of guys came back for their senior year. It’ll help having a lot of veterans out there, lot more guys that know what’s going on.

“Then you’re going to have young guys that are going to be able to come up, step in and play. That’s going to push the older guys work harder so the younger guys don’t push them out of the way. It’s only going to help us.”

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama football team began spring practice on Monday afternoon with a two-hour workout in shorts and helmets at the Thomas-Drew Practice Facility.

"It was good to be out there practicing again," Alabama head coach Nick Saban said. "It seemed like it came up quickly. It doesn't seem like that long ago that we were having bowl practice. As a coach the thing that you enjoy most is teaching the players and practice is the best time to do that. Spring practice is an opportunity to establish a standard of excellence for your team."
