While I do believe this is true with the players......I think they spend too much on coaches. Auburn has always had the little man syndrome, that's part of their problem. Bama pays the best coach in America the highest salary in America. The barn pays a high school coach 4 mil and calls him the best. In actuality they have a high school coach with championship expectations. While Bama has on of the best proven DC coaches in the country and they pay him accordingly. The barn hires a damaged coach as DC and immediately calls him the best DC in ALL of football, and pays him way too much.
So the difference is, Bama is paying coaches according to their worth while the barn wants to keep up with Bama pay according to the Bama scale, not the coaches worth.
Kiffin is a good contrast to Muschamp, Bama hired a damaged OC, got a great deal because of CLK's USCw buyout. No hupla about how great an offensive mind he is, just come in and do your job. It's worked great for both parties. But Gussy hurt Muschamp by labeling him king of the world.
While I'm rambling on about this, Gussy is setting Muschamp up for the fall too. The article noted:

Sad news from the Barn this weekend. Awbren homecoming queen, Betsy the Holstein, passed away suddenly. She was found early Sunday morning laying by a stump after celebrating her homecoming win Saturday night.
On Monday morning fusball coach Gus the Bus Malzan sent three offensive linemen out to bury Betsy. Late Monday night the players came dragging in worn out and filthy nasty. Coach Gussy commenced to chewing they out for taking so long to bury one cow.
The players explained “but croach….we hasd to dig up 3 holes before wez could bury Betsy. Coach Gussy asked “why in the world you had to dig three holes?” The players explained again “well croach….the first 2 weren’t big enough.”
