da#@...10 offers including OkSt.  Must be something to this guy.
Quote
McLeod is the second Walton senior to commit to Alabama, following in the footsteps of tailback Tyren Jones, who picked the Crimson Tide over UGA. “I know, that’s great. I didn’t choose Alabama because of Tyren. But it’s going to be cool to play with Tyren as a teammate for another four years. I think that should be fun.”
Did CNS take Jones to get to Parker or the other way around?
Tyren Jones is a definite talent.  McLeod is lagniappe.
13277  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: "Updated: NBC, ESPN announce 2012 college football TV schedules" on: June 09, 2012, 11:09:04 AM
Maybe they've convinced themselves that they can't compete with the other networks and they just take, what they think, is the best of what's left.
That's likely the case. NBC was outbid (outfoxed) by FOX for NFL games years ago, at a time when everyone thought upstart FOX paid too much.  But it was a great move for FOX, giving it instant cred as a 4th network.  A very good long-term investment.

NBC was outsmarted by ABC for college football games -- ABC was able to bid more and cover more games through its ownership of this new sports network called ESPN.  And ABC had NFL Monday Night Football too.

CBS dug its heels in and held tight to the SEC, and its NFL coverage.

And, as the prices were going up, NBC focussed its money on covering the Olympics.  So what was left?  Notre Dame, which turned out to be a bad investment.  NBC would have been better off going after the PAC10, or the ACC.
13278  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: BREAKING NEWS: "UNC football players flocked to suspect class" on: June 09, 2012, 10:50:08 AM
Those are some serious accusations.  Hard to believe UNC allowed it to happen.

In hindsight making a coaching change and hiring CAG was a big improvement but you have to support the current coach regardless of the situation. I would say the same thing if your screen name was Shulasucks. JMHO

Have to strongly disagree with you on these two items. He is a huge BB fan who was one of the few who saw that Gottfried was a lousy coach and needed to be fired. I know because him, myself, and a few others were attacked relentlessly on the TideSports forum when we said Gottfried should be fired. This was approximately 3 years before he was actually canned. Also, I am not into blind support for a coach who obviously can't coach, especially in football or basketball, our two biggest sports. Shula was a disaster and it was obvious he was clueless after two seasons. There is a name for someone who blindly supports someone, a sychophant. Pmull, you are way too smart and such an excellent poster to truly believe in such blind, unquestioning, total support.

I'm more with pmull on this.  It's not a question of "blind support."  But while the season is still ongoing and the guy is still the coach, you should attend the games and support the team, not boo the coach.  Booing the coach is the same as booing the team.  It is saying to them, "you are stupid for following this coach."  The players didn't pick the coach.  They are owed more support for what they do.  Once the season is over, the gloves are off.  So while it became clear during the season that neither Shula nor Gottfried were the answer for Alabama, there is nothing wrong with waiting until the end of the season to voice those concerns.

I'm still pizzed about the "Ears" years.

How can anyone question the wants and needs of CNS with the success he has had at Bama.  Huh?
For real, right?   Laughing

Just give the man what he wants and get on with  it.

I do think Saban pretty much has carte blanc at Alabama.  It started when Mal Moore hired him -- basically handing Saban a blank piece of paper and saying, "write down what you want."

But I'm glad Saban has been given such input.  He has a good head on his shoulders and has made some great decisions.  I do think he was involved in the move from Gottfried to Grant, and he helped sway Grant to choose Bama over other offers, including Georgia.

Some of those places are known for developing unknown QBs, including Louisville and Boston College.  And the guy looks pretty good on film, good movement in the pocket, good at reading the D.

Clearly, Saban has made QBs a priority with this class, especially with P Sims leaving.  Cooper Bateman is a nationally sought QB who has made the Elite 11 QB competition.  He is considered in the top 5 in the country.  I like that this fact hasn't scared off Parker McLeod.  He is willing to compete with the best.  That says a lot about this kid's character.  I also like that he described Alabama as his dream offer.  Starter or backup, the kid is fully committed.
13282  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: "Nick Saban eyes a new weight room at Alabama" on: June 09, 2012, 10:13:37 AM
The campus NEEDS a fishing lake.  Palmer Lake was always just a place to hit worn-out golf balls or toss coke machines that steal money (we did that once).  We need to expand, add a marina, a beach, a beach bar, etc.  Get the architecture guys working on it.

Didn't that get you moved to Byrd Hall?

This is such an embarassing schedule for a major TV network. CBS & ESPN will be showing games like Alabama/Michigan, Alabama/LSU, Georgia/USC, LSU/Arkansas, Georgia/USC, Georgia/Missouri, Texas A&M/Arkansas, just to name a few of the games. Or you can watch Notre Dame/Purdue, Notre Dame/Wake Forest, Notre Dame/Pitt, Notre Dame/Boston College, & Notre Dame/BYU, not to mention Mountain West games or Division II games. I'm sure fans can't wait to see such "big" games.

Alabama v. Michigan will be on ABC.  But Both CBS and ABC are miles ahead of NBC, which did put all their eggs in one basket, only to find that the basket has a hole in it.
13285  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: "Nick Saban eyes a new weight room at Alabama" on: June 08, 2012, 07:13:40 PM
To be a top tier program you have to have a top tier weight room. If CNS thinks we need a new weight room I say build him one and furnish it like no other in the country.
Bama built a new weight room a year or so before Saban arrived.  As for furnishings, first thing he did was remove the televisions.

It was a hard fought victory and they earned it.  The teams were pretty close talent wise, but our girls had a big edge in mental toughness.
Mental Toughness -- what's a little rain after you've been through a tornado.
13288  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: Alabama softball team wins its first national championship on: June 07, 2012, 10:15:18 AM
It's a shame the game could not have been on earlier so more folks could have seen it. I'm sure a lot of girl softball players would have enjoyed it. Did anyone notice the roster for the Tide?  Only 5 of the 20 players are from the state of Alabama, which surprised me since most larger high schools in the state have girl softball teams.

 Huh?

What I noticed is that there areNO girls from California.  A lot of people thinks you cannot win without a bunch of Cali. girls, (see Tennessee and Oklahoma rosters)

I like the national recruiting strategy coach Murphy has.  He has proved you can win without west coast players.
^THIS^  Reminds me of a Beach Boys song.

Amazing how fans can turn a negative into a positive. So, we play Vandy and make more money since we will drop someone like Georgia State, but we still play someone like Michigan, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, etc., to start the season off, despite what Saban said. You guys REALLY believe that?

 Shocked
I'm just saying that this is the direction things seem to be heading.  I love the big opening game and would hate to see it go.  But Bama won't see Oklahoma on its regular schedule in our lifetimes, ACC schools yes, and up-and-coming schools like WV, but not teams hoping for a national title game.
13290  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: Capitol One Cup... on: June 07, 2012, 10:05:32 AM
Womens sports include field hockey, ice hockey, skiing, rifle, fencing, bowling, water polo, rowing, soccer, and lacrosse -- I don't think Bama fields teams in these sports.
