Around Campus / The Quad / Re: Ranking Alabama's sports from 2011-12: No. 17 - Women's basketball
|
on: June 20, 2012, 08:58:22 AM

Click here for linkTUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- For the next two weeks, Andrew Gribble and Don Kausler Jr. will rank, in reverse order, Alabama's 17 sports programs (men's and women's track and cross country will be combined) based on how they fared during the 2011-12 season. More than just the final record will be considered, but there won't be an overwhelming amount of brownie points for a "good job, good effort."
Alas, the countdown begins with the program that has stuck near the bottom of the SEC for more than just one season. Outside of a relatively successful 2010-11 campaign, the Crimson Tide has yet to put it together under Hudson, who understandably inherited a mess when he took over in 2008. This is his team now, though, and the upcoming season is an important one. They've been bad for a long time now. I'd like to see CWH achieve some success with them. The SEC has some great women's BB teams. I'm not sure why Bama has been so terrible for so long. What's No. 16, men's baseball?

Click here for linkThe jury selection process in the trial of accused Toomer's Corner oak poisoner Harvey Updyke only just begun Tuesday, but if Updyke's comments to the Auburn student newspaper are any indication, he may have already lost the stomach for his impending legal battle.
The Plainsman reported Tuesday that when asked about his alleged crime outside an elevator at the Lee County Justice Center, Updyke readily admitted to having poisoned the famous Auburn landmark.
“Did I do it? Yes,” Updyke reportedly said.
“They're going to find me guilty… it's a done deal,” he added. “I don't think I'm going to get a fair trial.” An attorney's worst nightmare. He keeps digging his grave a little deeper every time he opens his mouth. He needs to plea bargain at this point and hope for the best. What's he going to do? They already have him on radio and TV broadcasts admitting to it, so denying it now just makes him look like a liar. And I expect no plea deal was offered by the Auburn DA, excepting some serious jail time. So all he can hope for is to come clean and hope the punishment fits the crime. The hardest decision for his lawyer is whether to put Harvey on the stand. Do you have him apologize and say he went crazy temporarily, or do you keep him quiet?

7) Alabama Crimson Tide – 10/27 Mississippi State, 11/3 @LSU, 11/10 Texas A&M. Two of these three games are very winnable, but will still be tough. The November 3rd showdown with LSU will most likely be the game of the season again this year. And, thankfully, most of the Tide’s opponents don’t have bye weeks before they play the Tide this year. So he's saying Bama has the easiest schedule in the West? That's only because they don't play Bama.

Click here for linkAlabama coach Nick Saban says he fully supports a new rule to restrict the amount of contact young players have during football practice, according to a story on ESPN.com.
The announcement ... was made last week and is aimed at limiting full speed head-on blocking and tackling drills.
Saban was quoted in the ESPN story as saying, "At our level, we try to limit exposure to contact as much as possible because we want our players healthy for the game. We've got to get young people to play the game in a safe way. You've got to start somewhere, right?" ....... I've done those drills. Not much technique involved. Me too. But it's all just a blur now.

All of this is just a knee-jerk reaction to what happened last season. The other conferences are so blinded by their rage at the SEC getting both teams into the title game that they cannot (or will not) see beyond this hatred. Instead, they are willing to sacrifice what is best for college football in order to do whatever is possible to keep the SEC to one representative or, even worse, none.
I think mostly they are trying to keep the SEC from placing more than one team in the playoff.

Hey Jamos (and anyone else that wants to answer), do you think the above is part, if not all, of the reason many coaches favor an early signing day? If I am not mistaken, it is something that CNS is a big proponent of.
I think Saban is dead set against it, if I remember correctly. He thinks it makes recruiting even worse and more intense. Saban has come out in favor of an early signing period. I think it would make it easier for him, numbers-wise, to see how many scholys he had left, instead of waiting to the last day. As it is, though, Saban is kicking it with recruiting, so the current system, with all its flaws, isn't stopping Saban from bringing home the talent.

wth ? they will need to move this trail to Bolivia and even then a jury might be hard to find ... Seems that they are gunning for him, leaving the case in Auburn. But everyone knows he is guilty, the only question is of what crime.

Bracket 1 played on Sunday and includes PAC12 teams Arizona and UCLA, as well as Florida State and Stony Brook (which has been eliminated.) Florida State and UCLA play on Tuesday, the winner to play Arizona.
Bracket 2 is the "SEC Bracket" and includes Florida, USCe, Arkansas and Kent State.
Florida lost to Kent State in the losers bracket game and is eliminated.
Arkansas beat South Carolina, 2-1, to grab the lead in the bracket.
South Carolina plays Kent State on Wednesday, the winner to play Arkansas again.
The teams leading their respective brackets are unranked Arizona and Arkansas, both of which got hot in the series.
I said I was pulling for Arkansas after they eliminated Oklahoma, and I'm sticking with it. USCe would be OK too, I was glad to see them beat Florida.
The way the brackets are set, we likely are looking at an SEC v. PAC12 championship.

Some of the pundits up North are thinking that The big 10 will make some noiise this season and Michigan will lead the pack. The party will be a short one if we send the pack leaded home with their tauls between their legs, a la MSUn.
I do think Michigan will be better this year -- Brady Hoke did an incredible job his first season fitting CRR's players into his system. But this Bama team will be a challenge unlike Michigan has faced in several years. VT doesn't count. Most experts are already writing this game down as a loss for Michigan, and while we need to play the game, Bama should win. I do think Michigan will give it everything they got, and Bama better be ready. But I have confidence Saban will have the team prepared for victory.

Around Campus / The Quad / Re: BAMA's chances for winning BCS (2012) NC
|
on: June 18, 2012, 09:35:30 AM

Let's face it. The most important thing for this season is for AJ to remain healthy. Without AJ playing, Bama would be a middle tier SEC team. That is because the defense is young, and Bama will need some offensive production to get through the season unscathed. Backup options at QB are the most limited they have been for some time.
2011 was maybe the first season that Saban didn't speak about mental focus, and it was clear why. That was one of the most focussed (and greatest) defenses in Alabama history. The younger offense made some mistakes, which particularly hurt the team in the first game against LSU, but came on strong in the BCSCG.
Even with the talent, I do anticipate some mental breakdowns by the young players on D. I hope they prove me wrong, but I'm not counting on it. This defense probably won't be as stout at last year's team. Hopefully they improve during the early season before Bama gets into the heart of its schedule.
With AJ healthy, the offense should be improved. The OL will be a veteran squad, one of the better units in recent memory. And there are more than enough options at WR and RB to compensate for the loss of some key players at those positions. EL showed much improvement last year, and if he can stay healthy he will be Bama's go-to RB. I really like Yeldon, too, and although young he has as much talent as any RB on the team. I don't see a redshirt for him this year.
Bama is a top 5 team this year, and if some of the young players step up it could compete for the crystal trophy in January. LSU likely will be the toughest test, with a veteran returning defense and an improvement at QB, once again that game in November could decide the outcome of the season.

#37 was one of the all time great RBs at Alabama. I remember the LSU game in 96, and wondered why it was 2 more years before we saw him start. When he finally got his chance, he was a game changer. Great blocking by the OL too, especially CS.
