13441  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: "Courtney Upshaw 'going to keep his head up' - Hightower says" on: April 27, 2012, 09:36:43 AM
I have been reading the draft analysis on ESPN and I am scratching my head over these defensive guys that got taken ahead of CU. Everyone knows about the insanity of the Bruce Irvin pick, but KC reached with the DT Poe. He came from a crappy school and played crappy competition and still didn't show up on film. He only showed up at the combine. Melvin Ingram was a stretch as well, because he is a tweener just like CU. He's too small for DT but doesn't rush from the edge that much. I see him struggling to make the transition in the NFL. That DE from NC whose name escapes me right now is another questionable pick. He has all kinds of off the field issues, and he has a lot of questions about his desire. He takes too many plays off. It just doesn't make any sense for these guys to go ahead of CU when CU never took plays off, can both bull rush and use great edge moves, has great lateral movement (He was chasing down RBs from across the field against LSU), and has great instincts. Plus, this kid is a good kid who doesn't have any character issues, and he's a leader on the field. There are a lot of GMs who are going to be sorry they missed on CU when they strap on pads. As an aside, KC has drafted DTs before with a top ten pick, and neither one has worked out. Glenn Dorsey and Tyoka Jackson are both average players that KC wasted top ten picks on in the last 5 yrs. Poe will be bust number 3, IMO.
Excellent analysis.  Some of those picks were head scratchers.  The NC guy, Quinton Coples, has talent but as you say seems to lack desire.  He probably will fit perfectly with the Jets.
13442  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: Jim Brown says TR merely "ordinary" on: April 27, 2012, 08:31:44 AM
I guess Jim Brown is entitled to his opinion.  So he thinks Trent will be an ordinary NFL RB? I guess the question is, what does he mean by "ordinary?"  I imagine he doesn't mean himself, as he claims to be the greatest RB of all time.  I think he used to claim that Emmit Smith was pretty ordinary.  Certainly S. Alexander was ordinary, at least when compared to the great Jim Brown.

And now along comes this kid who is faster, stronger and more humble than Jim Brown ever was, drafted by the same team where Brown played.  All those team rushing stats, owned for decades by the great Jim Brown.  No other RB at Cleveland has approached Jim Brown's greatness.  No other RB has challenged Jim Brown's statistical dominance.

But this kid has potential.

I don't think Brown is unimpressed.

I think Brown is afraid.
13443  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: *** NFL DRAFT: Trent Richardson Drafted No. 3 to the Browns on: April 27, 2012, 07:28:49 AM
I am very proud of Trent, Mark, Dre, and Dant'a. But IMO, the better Bama linebacker and maybe Bama's MVP for the year is still out there. He carried a couple of games on his shoulders because of his immense talent, tenacity and instinct. The Florida and NC games come to mind. He broke people, for crying out loud. I can't believe he hasn't been picked up yet. BAMADCHAMPIONSHIPS is right, someone is going to get a steal.
You are right.  The great players have their best games on the biggest stage, and Upshaw shined in those games.

I think Upshaw may have been left out because teams weren't sure what to do with him.  He is a "tweener," as in, his size and speed puts him between a pure defensive end and a LB dropping into coverage.  Drafting him as a defensive end would be hard for a team to do early because Upshaw played LB at Bama.  But Hightower is right, Upshaw will make his name known once he puts pads on.

David Wilson?Huh???  Shocked Terrible pick!
a real head scratcher.   Huh?  Picked over Upshaw, R Randle, and 4 others who were invited and were waiting in the green room.  Has to suck to be those guys and not hear their name called, especially for Upshaw watching his teammates go tonight.   Sad
13446  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: *** NFL DRAFT: Trent Richardson Drafted No. 3 to the Browns on: April 26, 2012, 10:05:18 PM
NY Giants with Pick No. 32 pick VA Tech RB  David Wilson.

Trent Richardson did give the RBs a bump in the draft this year, like he predicted.

That's it for tonight.  Picks resume tomorrow.

Pick No. 31, TB picks another Boise State player in the first round, RB Doug Martin.   Undecided
13449  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: *** NFL DRAFT: Trent Richardson Drafted No. 3 to the Browns on: April 26, 2012, 09:55:51 PM
Nick Perry USCw LB to GB. The packers missed out. CU is better.
Perry is a DE.  Upshaw played OLB at Bama but is projected as a possible DE in the NFL. There is some question as to CU's lateral agility to drop into pass coverage as an OLB, so he is projected either as a DE in a 4-3 or pass rushing jack LB in a 3-4.

Anyway, different teams have different needs.  We will hear Upshaw's name soon I hope.

When your coach eats grass, you start thinking.
When you start thinking, the QB doesn't throw passes your way in the BCS.
When the QB doesn't throw your way, you slip in the draft.

Don't be Reuben Randall.

Bad picks I've seen so far, IMO:

Panthers - Kuechly
Bills - Gilmore (not that bad, but went too early)
Jets - Coples (Melvin Ingram is better)
Rams - Brockers (They need more skill positions filled)
Bears - McClellin (What a joke)
Browns - Weeden (Don't they already have about 5 QB's.
When you have 5QBs, you don't have a QB.

The Bears use their first pick for a Boise State player.  At least he will be used to the cold.  BSU's second first rounder?  Shea McLellin.

glad to see Coach Saban getting all the props ....
otherwise the announcers can sthu

... and Coach Saban is right there recruiting for 2013.  "Go get 'em, Coach."
And the recruits and their parents are likely seeing Bama's dominance in the top tier of the NFL Draft...
