It's a mess down there. A few friends staying over the summer in the same complex are saying 1 person is dead and 5 are wounded.

Wow! I hope the Auburn folks are okay. Could this be a jealous boyfriend? Hopefully, it's not drug related.

Ed Christian is not listed on the 2012 football roster. He was listed as a redshirt freshamn on the 2011 roster. Here's stuff on Mack & Christian:

a pretty good on scene account of what happened  http://www.reddit.com/r/auburn/comments/uu71d/3_au_football_players_shot_1_reported_dead/
about half way down the page

Quote
What I've pieced together

There was a group of people at the front of the complex. It was not a pool party, like everyone keeps saying. Some kind of argument started up. A fist fight broke out. Ed Christian was not one of the people fighting. He was holding one of his friends back, trying to stop the fight, when he was shot.

We're pretty sure that Ladarious Philips (sorry if I spelled his name wrong) is another casualty.

We just heard that Eric Mack, who was taken from the scene to the hospital, has since died.

That's all I know currently.

And as much as I like to kid them, they are also with the Auburn team and fans, as well. This goes well beyond something as insignificant as football. Just like so many at Auburn prayed for the people up in t-town last year after the tornado, we should band together and pray for them during this dark hour.

God help us our young people in sports go from the ghetto to fame and go absolutely crazy. I'll be honest, I am not sure of any other way to stop this other than Prayer. This to me is awful. God Bless. RTR!

A man sought by authorities in connection with a shooting near Auburn University that left three people dead and injured three others, one critically, has previous arrests for gun offenses, but was never prosecuted, according to media reports Monday.

Desmonte Leonard, 22, of Montgomery, is the subject of a multiagency manhunt that stretched into its second day Monday. Leonard faces three charges of capital murder in the shooting late Saturday at an off-campus Auburn, Alabama, apartment complex, police said.

Quote
Court records show Montgomery police arrested Leonard in 2008 on a charge of carrying a pistol without a license, after stopping a suspected stolen vehicle and finding him inside. Documents available online didn't show whether the case was ever resolved, but Leonard was freed on bond within days.

Leonard was charged in 2009 with assault after allegedly shooting a man in the groin, but prosecutors dropped the case after the victim told authorities Leonard wasn't the shooter.

A Montgomery woman filed a paternity suit against Leonard on Friday that identified him as the father of a girl who turned 1 last month.

Another woman sued him in 2009 seeking unpaid child support for a girl who is now 4. A court ordered monthly payments of $305 by Leonard, who records show was working at a Wal-Mart store at the time.

sad deal there. There was a barner at my office at lunch today that made the comment that when they heard about it all they could think was "I sure hope none of them are key players."  You can't make this crap up.  I was like  :o  I hope none of our fans would react that way, but I'd not be surprised if they did.

It's natural, though, in a way.  When a plane crashes overseas everyone wants to know if any of the 300 killed were Americans.

By thugs do you mean black folks?  Because i see no evidence that the "thugs" who were gunned down were nothing more or less than three guys enjoying some time with friends. Yes, i am against people carrying handguns on their persons or in their vehicles. They are useless for defense and kill countless innocent people who would otherwise be alive.

That will be that for me, respecting the board.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- A defense attorney says a man accused of killing three people near Auburn University over the weekend has turned himself in.

Attorney Susan James says in a phone interview that Desmonte Leonard was taken into custody on Tuesday. Her comments confirm an earlier report by a law enforcement official who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

I hate to burst your liberal bubble, but yes multiple murders have occurred with someone using a knife/machete, and/or bat. This has occurred in the USA, England (cricket bat), India, Philippines, etc. Also, you failed to mention the thousands of lives saved every year because someone had a firearm. I have personal experience in this area.

According to a study by criminologist Gary Kleck of Florida State University, there are approximately 2.5 million cases of people using firearms for self-defense in America each year. Also, according to the Department of Justice’s 2007 Uniformed Crime Report, states with right-to-carry laws have a 30 percent lower homicide rate, as well as a 46 percent lower robbery rate.

Would you feel better if he had killed them with a knife or baseball bat?    :dunno:

Dude, please. Do you REALLY think some punk ass with a bat or knife would have killed 3 people and mortally wounded another? You can't be that stupid.

Sounds like you have a problem with an armed citizenry. Thugs shooting other thugs is certainly an unintended outcome,-- but that does not bother me much.

I know you would like to turn my view to racism-- liberals always hide behind that. This "party" was likely more of a public disturbance in a parking lot than a party, and right thinking, non-thuggery would have dismissed themselves long before things reached the thug outcome that it did. Most people I know stand a far greater chance being killed at work or in a toaster wiring, electrical mishap.

Where's Jesse? Where's the Rev Al?

His defense prob. gonna be, "well, he did not have a Big Wheel when he was 4 yrs old, and his Daddy abandoned the family.

I say turn him loose and let the "concerned citizens" of Lee County take care of the problem.

#+, well done MD. Those numbers are staggering. Where I live out in a rural area most everybody knows all the other neighbors and they keep watch. Some of these ol boys that watch haul guns in trucks and cars and if they catch somebody doing something to their friends they shoot these guys and dump them. They are good ol boys but they are as mean as a Copperhead Snake. RTR!

While I respect your respect for the board, would you mind explaining the part of your post that I bolded? Seriously, I'm very curious about what makes you think that.

Here is what I don't get about idiots who claim we need gun control and its the guns fault.
1. the gun aint a living being so the gun doesn't kill...people who pull the trigger kill.

2. if they outlawed guns all together...who is going to follow the law?...I say law abiding citizens would follow the law right?  are law abiding citizens the ones killing innocent people or is it thugs and criminals?.....well I do declare I think the thugs and criminals aka the NON law abiding citizens are the ones doing the crimes right?  in that case, what the hell makes anyone think that if there were a law that you can't own a gun that these thugs and criminals would obey the law and turn in their guns?????????  That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard and just plain ole common sense would tell you that it wouldn't work.  you do that and the only people that would have guns would be the thugs. it would make it harder for law abiding citizens to get guns, but criminals can still get guns just like peolpe can still get drugs relatively easy and drugs are illegal.  how is that working out?

How about we start making the punishment for all crimes more severe?  Just a thought.

Okay. Why do I think guns are useless for defense? Unless an assailant gives you advanced notice that he is about to attack you or enter your home, he will have his gun on you before you can ready yours. If you actually follow the rules for safe keeping of a weapon you stand no chance of using your gun in effective self-defense. Hand guns are problematic precisely because they are highly effective OFFENSIVE weapons.

As for the absurd claim about cricket bats, sure, you can kill someone with an iron skillet too. But let me ask you this: your son or daughter is at the party where Desmonte Leonard shows up. You can arm him with a 9mm or a cricket bat. What's your call?  Don't insult our intelligence. No one in the world would choose a gun attack over a knife or bat attack, especially when, as was the case in Auburn, the defenders have both numbers and strength on their side.

As for the tired out saws about guns dont kill people and only criminals would have guns, blah blah blah, the fact is that guns make killers more effective at killing. The "people" in the "people do" part of the saying are way less likely to kill you without a gun.   The argument is made that we can control killers by imposing stiffer criminal penalties on people who kill others.  Why would anyone who makes that claim not also believe that illegal gun possession could also be suppressed with stiffer crimal pentalties. I believe in enforcing anti gun laws before someone gets dead, rather than enforcing laws for after someone gets dead.

The claim that 2.5 million people annually successfully defend themselves with a gun. There are approx 80 million gun owners in the US. So we are to believe that every year 1 in every 32 gun owners defend themselves with their weapon? Not buying that. As for murder rates, why not compare us to Canada and Britain? Canada is particularly instructive because hunting is a cherished activity there and there are no laws limiting the sporting use of firearms.

Ah yes, typical liberal "logic." When you don't like the facts, you either ignore them or claim they are wrong, but you can never seriously challenge their authenticity. The study was conducted at Florida State by a professor of criminology. FSU has a very well-known & respected College of Criminology & Criminal Justice. The study was cited in a recent Supreme Court decision involving the gun ban in Wash., DC. Even Justice Stephen Breyer (Ted Kennedy liberal) said when D.C. initiated the gun ban in 1976, crime went up, but he still did not beleive the gun ban was totally responsible (apparently just a big coincidence). You forgot to challenge the FBI stats that show more robberies and other crimes more prevalent in states/cities with tough gun laws. An innocent oversight on your part, I'm sure. Right now, Chicago is under a HUGE violent crime wave which resulted in the National GUard being called in to help with the violent crime problem. Oh, did I mention, Chicago has a gun ban, just another meaningless coincidence, I'm sure. There are facts after facts about this issue, but liberals like yourself prefer to live in a world of denial to anything which contradicts your ideas on this issue. By the way, it's impossible to compare the USA to Canada or England due to the extreme difference in demographics. Blacks (12% of the US population) commit half of all murders in this country. Using your logic, we should ban black people from owning guns, right?

That was one motivated murderer. If any bleeding heart liberal thinks additional gun laws would have stopped that guy, you must have rocks in your head. I promise he was already violating a slew of gun possession laws before he ever pulled the trigger. The only thing that may have saved a life or two is someone else in the crowd carrying a weapon. One gun in the hands of a criminal-- 50 people unarmed-- that seems to be the odds libs want you to face. You never really see anyone decide, "Hey, lets go rob the gun show"!

It's sad that three people died but who actually initiated the fight with the first lick to cause these three people to die.  :dunno:

you seem to be assuming that all murders are gun related and any suggestion otherwise is false  :dunno:

yes, if criminals didn't have guns they wouldn't use guns to kill, but if someone wants to kill someone else and they don't have a gun, there are lots of ways to do it....and if you are going to respond to my post then why not respond to all the points? specifically the point that if you had more gun control laws that the only people that would obey the laws would be the non criminal/thug type.  the type of person that would kill someone is not going to turn his gun in.  secondly if guns were illegal....you know like drugs are...people could still get guns illegally just like people get illegal drugs very easily I might add.  I'm sure you are a swell guy, but you seem to not have a lick of common sense on this subject.

short answer...thugs bein thugs.

the most consistent story I have heard is that the shooter was hittin on one of the football player's girlfriend....one boy hit him in the face and one of the players hit him and his "homie" upside the head with beer bottles from behind and then the little thug pulled out his gun and started shooting.  a guy called finebaum yesterday and said he knew about 10 people at the party and they all pretty much told that story which was the same story that was told by the shooter's friend that called finebaum on Monday.

They was keepin it real.

They interviewed on TV one of the guys who admitted to being in the fight. His last name was Vines. He stated that he and his friend named Pitts got in the fight with the shooters. Vines stated he punched one guy in the face and Pitts hit the other with a beer bottle. Pitts was killed but Vines never got a scratch. Fate is very fickle. Two guys who did nothing are killed and another is shot in the head and fighting for his life at UAB. Sad.

The point I'm trying to make out of this is that if the first punch had not been thrown, no one would have died and most of all, the dude that hit the other with the beer bottle is what brought the gun out. A good lawyer will definitly pursue self defense for the two that crashed the party and I'm not siding with these two at all but all of this could have been prevented by a single phone call to the police to remove the two party crashers from the premiss.

Jealousy, booze, drugs, and big egos can be a deadly formula which we all have now witnessed at that fateful party.

Thugs..calling the police? really!  And what color is the sky in your world?

Most of the time, the police cannot even get witnesses to tell what they saw when they were 5 ft from a crime.

While this is all senseless, it happens often..especially in certain communities..the facts prove it. It is up to the people who live in these communities to put a stop to the craziness..but that ain't gonna happen any time soon.

You are labeling all of the people at this party as being thugs, then I must assume that you were there as well to witness all of this. There didn't seem to be a problem of calling the police after the shootings occured by these same thugs.

I haven't followed, nor bothered to read, all of the details of this shooting.  But it appears to be another example of what happens in most major cities nightly: people using guns to solve minor problems.

Regardless of your stance on gun control, it's most upsetting that young people are killing each other.  It's not just drugs, but that's related.  It's not just Black kids.  Seems that it's becoming too easy for young men to raise a gun to solve their problems.

Parents needed?  Economy?  Religion?  It's ugly.
