Title: Saw Mark Richt and heard him speak last night...
Post by: Elephantidae on March 02, 2011, 05:14:24 PM
at an FCA banquet in Jax.  He had an interesting testimony for when he was saved and gave credit to Bobby Bowden.  However, I was not impressed with his public speaking skills and I'm not sure how he could fire up a team before a game or at halftime.  Seems like a genuinely nice guy but I can't see running through walls for him.  Just one man's opinion.

Thanks for the post.  Apparently there are many fb players who agree.

I've always respected him.  And while he may not have the personality to charge up a team, I'd like to think that the team could charge itself right before a game. I've never played football (well except with my younger brothers when I was a kid) and I could be wrong, but I think if I were playing a big game, I'd have myself so psyched up that I'd run through the wall for anyone.. just to get out there and play :)

That said, I think he is about to run out of chanced at Georgia. I think he's gone in the next 2 years.

I love Jesus too, but Mark Richt has been riding that for a while now.  Time to coach or preach.

We should Love Jesus and we should teach to our younger players or coaches, or whomever. I do think though he has a style that is figured out and you can't coach if you don't change styles every year. You have to tweak. RTR!

Terrie is partly correct.  Players psych themselves up sometimes.  There is an old story about Coach Bryant (CB) in one of the first books published after his death.  Bear with me ::), I can't recall the team they were playing (on the road), but it was in the eastern time zone.  It was 1959 or 1960, and CB said he was disappointed in the crowd as his team warmed up.  He said he kept looking around, and as the Alabama team went to the locker room it hit him: they were an hour early.  Embarrassed, he said he didn't admit his mistake.  He said he walked back and forth in the locker room trying to think of something to say.  Finally he looked at his watch and it was game time, so he just said, "Let's get 'em."  He said they nearly tore the door off.  Bama won big; the press talked up his great psychological ploy.  CB said it was 6 months before he admitted his mistake. ;D

LOL, that's perfect.

I love that story! Thanks! (that's definitely an applause post too!)

I looked for my copy last night to see what game it was (and what year).  Couldn't find my copy.  If you recall, please tell me; otherwise I may have to buy a new book.  Roll Tide.

I don't have that book yet but I sure want to buy one. I would love to read CBB's story. I started as a fan in 1962. I saw Lindsey Nelson call an Alabama game against Texas or Okla. I think it was. Darrell Royal was the coach of Texas and Bud Wilkinson was coach of Okla. Gosh I am old huh? lol, RTR!

I believe it was a Ga Tech game in Atlanta, but I'm not sure.  I'll go grab my copy off the nightstand and see if I can find it.

Well I totally missed that one.  The story actually starts about half way down page 1 of the book.  I typed up the story from the book and posted it in the community blog.  So now it is on the front page.  You can also click here to go to the forum topic in the community blog forum and comment on it if you want:

Thanks much, Coach.  I actually read that story in one of the first books about Coach Bryant, before he died I think.  I've repeated the story numerous times, but never could find the account again (or my book).  Bless you.  Cred to your account.

:happy emoticon:  ;D :D :D ;D ;D :D

There are a ton of great stories in that book.  I highly recommend it.  Another one in there talks about the time he wore a helmet in pre-game warm-ups at Georgia Tech because the fans had thrown bourbon bottles at them during the previous game there.  They came out for warm-ups and the scoreboard was set to 90-0 in favor of Tech.  Of course that didn't work out so well for Tech.  :)

I will give this word of warning though... on many occasions when reading the book I found myself wanting to put on a helmet and go tear the door down myself.  It really get's me fired up.

It might be fun to post some stories like that from time to time.  I don't think we would be in trouble for copyright violations as long as it is a short excerpt from a much larger book, and we give credit to the author with a link to where to buy the book on amazon.  I might try to contact the author of that book and see if I can get official permission.

Any lawyers out there want to weigh in on what is allowed without getting in trouble?

By the way the book is Copyright 1974, so it may very well have been the same book you read back then.
