Title: Fluorescent Screen - Need Help
Post by: KoKoPuf on October 06, 2011, 12:23:15 PM
Hey Guys, I'm having an ongoing problem with the display on my notebook computer. Several times a week, the screen develops a fluorescent green around pictures and objects along with a fluorescent pink glow on most of the screen. It usually happens when I turn the computer on but lately will happen while I'm using the computer. Turning off and back on occasionally helps but only occasionally. I've tried restoring to an earlier date and that usually works for a few days. The notebook is a Dell 1530 running Windows 7. Any thoughts?

It sounds like the LCD panel on the laptop is going bad.  Do you have a regular computer monitor that you can hook up to it?  If so, you can determine if it is the laptop panel.  If you don't have any problems when it is connected to an external monitor, then you will need to have the LCD panel replaced in the laptop.  If you get the same green/pink glow problem when it is connected to the external monitor, then it is not the laptop screen but either the internal video card or a software/OS problem.  The external monitor test is the best way to help zero in on where the problem is.

Do these pink and green fluorescent images appear shortly after you have partaken of adult beverages? 8)

I had not thought of the strong spirit affect! I guess KK could be spiking my morning coffee!

Thanks Coach. I don't have an external monitor but I thought the screen might be going bad. I guess it's time to start looking for sales on notebooks.

Most replacement screens are around $100 just for the parts.  It could also be the cable that connects the screen to the motherboard, but those cables are outrageous if you can even find one.  There is a small chance that the cable just has a bad connection on one end or the other.  Before I got rid of it I would probably take it apart and reconnect the cable just to make sure.  You really have nothing to lose if you are planning to throw it away any how.  But don't do it until you are done with it and ready to throw it away.

You would probably be a lot better off just buying a new notebook, especially if you need to hire someone to do the repair work for you.  The parts and labor would be as much as some new computers, and you would still have the same old machine.

If it has an HDMI output, connect it to your TV and view the picture.

I do agree with SuperCoach though, sounds like the display is going out.  It would really surprise me if it were software related.  Sounds like you're going to have to buy a new one.  You could probably get $75 for it on eBay in the present condition.  Else, at least scavenge some parts off it (hard drive, DVD drive, RAM) for possible back ups (though the RAM is likely outdated).

For goodness sake, don't tell him to take that computer apart!  :o It will end up in millions of pieces and him shouting at it!  I try not to let him get hold of a screw driver or hammer if I can help it!  Yes, believe it guys, I'm the mechanical one in this family! ;D

SuperCoach,my dear, then he will blame me for the whole thing! :(

P.S.  I did fix his last computer, a Sony notebook.  It quit turning on when he pushed the button.  He took it to Radio Shack, they kept it for ages, couldn't do anything.  So he brought it home and I told him to just set it on the counter.  Every day I would walk by it and push the button.  Of course nothing happened.  So one day I looked at it closely, cleaned all around it and pushed one more time.  Voila,  Sony turned on!  It's been coming on ever since and that was about four years! #+
