Per a statement from the NFL, the gambling took place during a 5-day period in November while Ridley was not with the team:

IMO, this should be a non-issue.  If he were still with the team when he did it then I'd be ok with the suspension but since he wasn't the NFL should butt out!  Also IMO, they are just trying to make an example of him since this is something that we don't hear of very often.

Also, I have seen several tweets from Ridley and he is seemingly just taking it in stride...

I love how the NFL is supporting him with his mental issues.

First, Ridley should have known better.  That said, the NFL had "partnerships" with FOUR online gambling platforms last season.  It doesn't surprise the the NFL is more than a little hypocritical.  Here's the link to the NFL press release touting their "partnerships".  https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-announces-agreements-with-four-approved-sportsbook-operators

First off, he knew it wasn't allowed and it was a stupid move.   Beyond that, a year suspension is ridiculous.  It's not like he was betting hundreds of thousands.  He bet what those guys spend on a bottle of booze on a Sunday night after a win.  You can't tell me there isn't larger wagering going on in all the clubhouses amongst the players themselves.   I guess his biggest mistake was going to a legitimate gambling spot that keeps records.

I agree with the first sentence.  That's enough.

Yes sir he knew the rules when he went into that league. Pete Rose knew and it cost him the hall of fame. RTR!

From what lstephen posted here, including the link, IMO Ridley should be given a pass on this.  In the first place, he was separated from the team when he did the gambling.  And in the second place, why should the league be allowed to profit from gambling but not the players?  I mean, without the players there is no league.  Is the league going to share any of their gambling profits with the players?

I think a more accurate comparison would be a player getting an endorsement contract from one of the gaming companies rather than actually wagering themselves.  And I don't know if that's allowed or not.  I'd think the front office NFL personnel are forbidden from betting on the NFL as well.
