Title: Alabama vs Vandy in Basketball Saturday
Post by: Marshal Dillon on February 19, 2021, 07:39:20 PM
Alabama is the best team in the SEC at 17-5, 12-1 in conference. Vandy is the worst at 6-11 & 2-9. However, I NEVER underestimate Vandy basketball against the Tide. They have an almost magical hold over Tide BB going back over 45 years. It’s been very frustrating for me who has watched Tide BB since 1968 with their 5 white boys starting with a 6’7” center who could jump maybe 4 inches off the ground.

Tide has a NET ranking of 7 which is outstanding. Tide is 10-1 at home and 5-2 on the road. Game is in T-Town @ Noon on SEC Network.

We hold a slight all time win percentage against Vandy at 72 wins/70 losses. Playing at Vandy has been a big problem as long as I can remember. We are at home today and we have the better team. I look for us to take care of business and put Vandy away, hopefully without late in the game drama.

I wish they would let Herb Jones rest and go easy on the back. We should be able to handle Vandy without him.

All these offensive struggles of Bama the last 5-6 games does not bode well for Bama in the SeC or NCAA Tourney.

Tide 33 Vandy 29 HALF. Ugly looking half of shooting by Bama. Tide 6/24 3 pointers 25%.

Tide finally awake plus they have stopped Vandy cold with their defense. Tide 57-45 9:59 left in game. Tide shooting 50% in 2nd half.

I must say, the play of Bama has been somewhat discouraging the last few games. Yes, we can win, but winning by the skin-of-your-teeth always catches up to you. I don’t know if we can win the SEC Tourney at this rate. Plus, in the NCAA Tourney, EVERY team is coming at you hard and playing at a high level. Can we even make it to the Elite Eight, not unless we step up our game, stop fouling so much (talking to Herb Jones, Reese, and 1 or 2 others). Any other thoughts out there?

Points well taken MD.  The team has got to step up their game our we are in for a disappointing ending to a great season.

Congrats to the team for hanging in there and winning this one.  I only saw the last aprx. 4 mins.  The overall FT stats may look OK but I think 4-5 missed FTs at the end of the game made it closer than it needed to be.  In the SEC & NCAA tourneys missing FTs late in games will get you sent home.

ANOTHER CHAPTER OF EVERYONE’S FAVORITE SOAP OPERA:

THE GOOD

Tide won another nail biter.
Shackelford scored 27 points
Tide scored 57 bench points, Vandy 10.
Tide scored 32 points in paint, Vandy 26
Tide had only 9 turnovers

THE BAD

Tide 10/39 3 pointers, 25.6%
Josh Primo inconsistent again, 5 points in 19 minutes

AND THE UGLY

Herb Jones in foul trouble (common problem) most of game and fouls out with 8 points in 19 minutes
Tide barely beats worst team in SEC
Tide misses several FT’s late in game
Petty 1/7 3 pointers & 6 points in 28 minutes. He continues to be inconsistent in shooting. We need him for the Tournaments.

This team is a major candidate for first-round upset by an underdog in the tournament.  They've underestimated lesser teams all year.

I do not understand all the disappointment. We are 13-1 in SEC play and on our way to winning the SEC Regular Season Conference Championship. We are Top Ten in the polls, RPI and most importantly NET. When we shoot the ball well we blow people out. When we don't we find another way to win. Vandy shot the ball well yesterday. They hit two prayer three point shots in the final minute or we win by 10. We are winning the close games we have lost for the last 25 years. This is best team we have had since 1986-87. We have a target on our back and we are getting everyone's best shot.

We have a big game Wednesday against a very hot Arkansas team at their place. It is not a must win game but a win might project us to a #1 seed.

Enjoy this season. We have not been in this position in a long time.

None of us are talking about disappointment. We are expressing the obvious in how the team has been playing the last 5 or 6 games. Being challenged and almost losing to Vandy, Miss. State, and South Carolina should be a wake-up call to the entire team. There are MANY strong teams out there who we may face in the NCAA Tourney, teams like Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and those aren’t even top teams like Baylor, Villanova, Gonzaga, Michigan, & Ohio State. We need to play with more enthusiasm and energy and quit fouling so much. I love the fact that we are 18-5 and ranked in the Top 10, but it can evaporate if we get upset in the, say, 2nd round of the Tourney.

We play Arkansas on Wednesday and we better play at peak form. They are tough and looking to ensure a trip to the Big Dance with a big win over a ranked team. They will be fired up and ready. I look forward to seeing an energized Bama team responding to this challenge.

Sounds about right to me.

I think we were just exhausted against Mizzou and OU, both of which were away games.  As for the lesser teams we have played close recently, again, I think because of the team being tired they have coasted a little and turned it on when they had to, doing just enough to get the win.

Hopefully they are getting some rest and will be ready to finish the season strong by the time we get to the SEC tournament.

In recent years in February, there was discussion about us being a bubble team and can we do enough to sneak into the NCAA Tournament.  This year the discussion is about whether we have done enough to be a 1 seed.  Huge improvement.

The ESPN predictor has Arkansas favored to win 56.6% to 43.4% for Alabama.  I agree with pmull that if we manage to win that game it might bump us back up to a 1 seed again.

I don't know if y'all have noticed, but the next game panel on the right now shows basketball.  We are a basketball school now1.

1.  We will switch back to football as soon as basketball season is over.  :lol2:

I am not disappointed in our play as much as we have a chance to get noticed. We have never been here at this point of the year for so many moons that Chief BB team is surprising. We love to win at Alabama.
CNO in his 2nd year has us hoping for big dreams. We give him 5 or 6 years like the other coaches we had and he will build us a winner even in the Big Dance. My .02 worth. RTR!

So speaking factually is complaining. I guess you think Shula had great coaching potential if he had more time to learn.

I will always be grateful to Shula for stepping into a situation where he was doomed to fail.

The limited success he did have was due solely to the legacy name of Alabama being able to draw good players in spite of the extremely negative situation at the time.

The program was toxic at the time.  I was happy to have a coach and staff when the season started.

Shula was never meant to be a head coach.

Also, lighten up.
