Title: Basketball vs OU
Post by: hscoach on January 29, 2021, 03:06:34 PM
Should Bama rest some players in this game to prepared for the second half of the season?  From some reports they are pretty banged up.

No way. Go for the win. People are saying the SEC is down and we need to prove them wrong. Why play if we are not trying to win?

I would be OK resting a player if he is beat up like Herb Jones may be but not several starters.

CNO said the team was banged up but also talked about how important a win against Oklahoma would be for seeding in the tourney. Everything I've read says they will all play except for Bruner. He is still 2-3 weeks away from playing.

Here’s some info about this subject.

Quote
Herbert Jones has played through pain for much of this past month, dislocating his finger to the point of it breaking skin against Kentucky on Jan. 12 before picking up a knock following a fall against Mississippi State last weekend. Friday, Oats said Jones has not practiced since Tuesday night’s game.

Quote
Fellow starter Alex Reese has also been dealt a couple of blows this past week. The senior injured his left knee against Mississippi State before having to leave the game for a brief stint following a collision during Tuesday night’s game.

We may want to rest both. Reese was noticeably limping in the game, so him for sure.

Injuries pounding the BB team like they do the FB team. RTR!

I know it would be great to get a win, but does this game really matter with the rest of the SEC season to go along with the SEC tournament?  The hard part as a coach is not playing your best players and going for the win.  The better Bama finishes in the SEC the better seed they get in the SEC tournament.

Oklahoma without 2 starters.

Reese & Jones are in the game. Reese seems to be moving well. Reese misses 2 FT.

OU defense really causeing problems for Bama. They appear very quick and active. 6-2 OU. Another steal & score by Sooners. Team looks distracted and confused. 11-2 Sooners. We can’t walk & chew gum right now. Team looks unfocused. We can barely get a shot off. We have taken 5 shots and have SIX turnovers.

Another turnover by Tide on bad pass. We now have EIGHT turnovers. Three by Reese. 12-8 Sooners. OU playing a good pressing defense while being active around the basket on offense & defense.

Three Tide players standing around under OU basket and OU guy comes between them and grabs rebound to score. 17-13 OU.

Game tied. Despite the awful look of Tide in first 13 minutes of game, we are tied. OU has been very cold shooting 7/25 FG 28%. Tide is 6/16 37.5% in FG. Petty 3, 20-17 Tide. OU turnover.

OU 32-29. Good D by Tide to cause shot violation by OU. Wish Reese would stop falling down so much trying to get foul call. At the half 32-29 Oklahoma. Team looks flat at times but good at other times.

Shackleford hits 3, Tide 34-32. OU still trying to slow game down, make Tide play half court game. Tide rebounding looks bad. 35-34 OU. Tide looking discombobulated right now. OU defense is excellent.

Reese keeping us in the game. Tide scores 5 straight points, 55-51 OU. 7:30 left in game.

Ellis has sparked team. 60-59 Tide. 3:20 left in game. Now 61-60 OU. Why do we have such problems with lay-ups in every game. Wow!

ANOTHER missed lay-up. 63-61 Sooners. 37 seconds left.

I think Alabama should spend all day Sunday doing lay-ups in practice and practicing rebounding.

Well with all the injuries these guys did play hard. I guess it only drops us back to what about #14 in the rankings. RTR!

Tide loses 66-61 in ugly game by Tide. Oklahoma was missing TWO starters including their best player. They played in a very energetic manner on defense and literally swarmed to the basketball with 2 or 3 guys almost every play. I think their defense and quickness surprised Bama.

Tide was "off" in this game right from the start.  Maybe a good wake-up call for the rest of the season.  More than practicing layups, maybe the team needs a day off for physical & mental rest.

At least not a conf loss.

At least I have to agree with you partly cause they looked tired to me. RTR!

Time for the insightful and extremely intellectual:

THE GOOD

Ellis came off bench for 11 points in 20 minutes
Reese scored 15 points on 6/14 FG

THE BAD

Tide offense overwhelmed by OU defense and scores only 61 points
Tide out rebounded 42-34 by OU.
Tide 9/14 FT 64%
OU took 8 more shots than Tide, 62-54
Tide 21/54 FG 38.9%
OU 28 points in paint, Bama 20

AND THE UGLY

Petty had 9 points, H. Jones 7, & Primo 5
OU 13 offensive rebounds, Bama 6
Second chance points, OU 10, Bama 0 (that was the game)
Alabama was totally unprepared for the OU defense, getting down 11-2 very quickly with several turnovers

Good article about Bama/OU loss.

Quote
As a result of the loss, the Alabama Crimson Tide will drop in the next AP and Coaches polls. There is no reason for concern. Consider those polls for entertainment purposes only. One ranking matters more than all the others. It is the NCAA NET ranking. A loss to a good team is not severely punished in the NET.

Through the games of January 30, the Crimson Tide NET ranking is 11. Though there are nine regular-season games left, the Tide is playing for NCAA seeding and Saturday’s loss will have little or no impact.

Quote
The biggest current worry for the Crimson Tide is Herbert Jones’ nagging lower back pain. Herbert may not be injured but he is playing hurt and his leaping ability has been adversely affected. He needs to heal and perhaps to miss, not just practices but sit for a game.

Not a bad day as we all knew. We are tired and we couldn't buy a basket so we got beat with less than 80 points on our board. RTR!
