Title: Anybody want to talk Heisman?
Post by: hscoach on December 21, 2020, 10:52:04 AM
I think Bama has three legit candidates with Jones, Smith, and Harris.  The problem I see is that each could pull votes away from the other therefore allowing someone else to sneak in and win.

This is very true. I do think in order to catch the ball it has to be thrown in the right place, but you have to have ability to catch it. Then, you can run the ball good but with O-line blocking and the QB putting the ball in the pocket prepared by the RB. So my heisman choice today would be probably Mack #1 and Devonta & Najee tied for second. RTR!

I saw the updated Heisman odds yesterday. They had:

1. D Smith
2. M Jones
3. K Trask
4. T Lawrence
5. N Harris

That looks about right to me. I do worry about our three guys splitting votes.

Question: The Heisman ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday 1/5/21. The championship game is Monday 1/11/21. Do we let our three best and most important players/team leaders go to the ceremony and miss practice?

Are they even getting together this year or is it going to be via zoom?

I have not heard anything on this valued statement. RTR!

Good point. Probably Zoom.

I think I heard that the voting ends today, the 21st and the awards would be virtual.  Could be wrong though.

My votes if I had the opportunity:

1. Devonte Smith
2. Kyle Trask
3. Mac Jones

Kyle and Mac are both phenomenal QBs with incredible arms.  Neither one are particularly adept at running the ball regardless of the 3 or 4 first-down runs and two TD's Trask ran against us.  Devonte separated himself IMO by catching so many passes and then leading the nation in yards after the catch and then adding the punt return duty after Waddle got injured.  He, IMO, has been the most valuable to his team than the other two guys.

I agree about Smitty. I would put Mac over Trask, however. IMO, Mac was a much more dependable and complete QB than Trask. As good as Trask was, he made a few costly mistakes that cost them. I put Najee over Lawrence. Lawrence had a great game against ND, but his body of work during the year is nowhere near as impressive as Najee.

FWIW. Smitty is one of the most complete WRs I've ever seen. WRs don't usually win the Heisman, but I think Smitty should.

Someone should do a meme of DeVonta and Mac with cowboy hats titled "Alias Smith and Jones"
Would if I could but I can't

I think the Bama guys will pull some votes from each other, but also since 4 of the 5 guys with the best odds are in the SEC and the other is from the Southeast (Clemson, SC), the effect will not be as dramatic as if there were legitimate Big10, 12 or PAC candidates to take that portion of the media votes.

Looking at QB's only, I would have to give the edge to Jones over Trask.  Jones completed 76.5% of his passes and threw for 3739 yards with 32 touchdowns.  He was 250 for 327.  Trask completed 69.68% of his passes for 4125 yards and 43 touchdowns.  He was 285 for 409.  As far as yards per completed pass, Jones averaged 14.956 peer completion while Trask averaged 14.40 yards per completion.  For yards per pass attempt, Jones averaged 11.43 per pass attempt and Trask averaged 10.08 per pass attempt.  For passing efficiency Jones ended the year at 202.35 while Trask was at 186.65.  The stat I couldn't find was how many total minutes played by each.  I sure Trask played more than Jones as he was removed from many games.

ESPN Quarterback Ratings has Jones leading with 95.6 to Trask 90.4.

I am no expert but my review of all these numbers show Jones was on his game all 11 times he suited up. Trask had a couple of off games. Both had outstanding years.

I think Devonta wins it. He’s a game changer.
