Safe?  There are no people, so certainly safe from disease. But I had an encounter with a bull bison. I was sitting on a log overlooking Soda Butte Creek. The creek was loud, so I didn’t hear the bison coming through dense evergreens until it was 10’ away. My log seat was apparently on his trail. I stood and (of course) turned on my video camera. He was coming at me walking. You never appreciate how huge a bison head is until you’re 5’ away. A big lodgepole pine was to my left, so I stepped behind it. He stopped and stared. Bisons have tunnel vision; he just wanted to walk his trail, and wasn’t going around me. So as he approached the tree I walked around it and was facing his butt. With that he walked on. I have video, but can’t put that on here. I’ll try for capturing still pics from it. Pretty cool once he walked away. They’re not real aggressive until rut season; late summer. But gotta say, a huge brown beast coming through the brush is exciting. :lol2:

Tuesday May 19th:

BIG DAY FOR BIRD WATCHING.

I drove up into the Beartooth Mountains and hiked around.  In the distance is Pilot Peak, and in the foreground is the only car I met along the way.

Too much snow for much hiking, but I did find a big, quail-like bird: BLUE GROUSE.

That stump behind the bird looks mystical.

Also took pics of a YELLOW WARBLER that was in the willows about 15' from my back door.  One of America's prettiest birds:

Hey, it worked.  You may be able to tell from the video that I was on a bluff over the river, so I was stuck with no exit except behind the tree.  And after the bison stops and looks at me, he walks away and steps over a log.  THAT'S THE LOG I WAS SITTING ON!

I'm pretty used to reading the moose behavior.  They are much worse when they have babies or during mating season.  I'll be careful.

And then winter came back.  And so did my Bison Buddy.  After a walk in the woods, today he returned to town for some chomping on folks' flowers and stomping on their soft yards.

If this video plays for you, the snow should be obvious.  It's in the low 30s and snowing pretty hard now.  But tomorrow's forecast is for high in 50s, so no worries.

Was a good day yesterday.  In addition to the moose I saw crossing the road, and the snow (off and on all day), I saw 6 bears (2 grizzlies far away, and 4 black bears).

Supposed to snow all day today and tomorrow; up to 4-6".  Glad I'm snug in my cabin instead of a tent!

Here are the best pics I could get of the Cinnamon Black Bear and the more typical Black Bear:

Today was excellent (Friday May 22).  By 9am I'd seen a grizzly, a black bear, and 5 wolves.  No pics of the wolves (I'll explain later), but got the bears.

Bison babies, called "RED DOGS", are racing around the valleys of Yellowstone.  Later this summer the grass will be brown, but now it's beautifully green and yummy for the herds.  The red dogs are still on milk!

It was.  Love that photo on the bottom.  Yellowstone is HUGE!

I went fishing yesterday along Soda Butte Creek.  The woods were dark and dripping snow.  The stream was clear and cold; too cold for the fish it seems.  In the great tradition of CRS, I caught none.

Speaking of lunch, I sat out in the sunshine to eat lunch and look at the mountain across the street with my scope.

There are times I've felt like doing the same. For instance, Sunday, we drove up Paris Mountain, which is just one hairpin curve after another. We came up on a biker who could care less that we were behind him, and never pulled over to let us by. I gave him a close enough call that he'll think about doing it the next time.  :lol2:

Great pics, BTW. The bison reflection in the water is awesome!

2, give the cyclist the room they need.  Yes, it is rude of them to not ride on the white line on the right side of the road but you don't want to get in any trouble for not giving him enough room.  You certainly don't want to cause him/her to be injured...I hope...

Watching it again, it's obvious that I was still moving while taking the video.  Rule is, you can drive through the park but no stopping.  My lawyer should be able to get me off, should I get arrested by park police.
 :lol2:

Yesterday I came upon a car stopped in the middle of the road.  "What are you guys, bison??"  Finally they moved over and I passed them.  They were intent on taking pics of a distant moose.

I'm not sure about up there in SC but here in Alabama cyclists are "entitled" to 3' of space.  The real jerks will ride in the middle of the lane but most will try to stay close to the white line on the side. I have, in the past, almost hit by a truck that was traveling at least 65 mph and I was ON the white line  on a 4-lane highway.  >:(

Yeah, there is no call for taking up that much of the roadway. That is an example of where I wish car drivers could use dash-cam video and submit it to the police and they would ticket them.  Won't happen though...

I agree Preacher but the beauty of this world will appear so ugly and bland compared to the beauty of Heaven.

Tuesday May 26, 2020.

Okay folks, try to focus.  I'm posting photos on several media for friends and family, and I'm not sure I can continue at this pace once the park opens officially.  It takes a while for each photo posted on CRS, because they must first be posted on Imgur (which is slow).  I know 2 can access Facebook, and wish you all could.  For now I'll continue posting here as often as I can.

As always, right click on photos and choose VIEW IMAGE for full view of photo.

Tuesday was crazy for wildlife.  It was overcast all day and cool, so critters were out and about.  I saw 12 moose before noon, including this Bull (early morning), and Mom with 2 Yearlings (late morning):

These 2, a Mom and yearling Cub, were right in the road near the Gardner River:

I look forward to being able to take photos while stopped, instead of snapping shots through the windshield.  But better than sitting at home!

Wednesday May 28, 2020.  Another great day for critter watching.

I drove into YNP before daybreak, and immediately found this Cinnamon Black Bear alongside the road.  Too dark for a decent photo, but wanted to show him.  He was the same bear we watched last June eating on a moose carcass (died in giving birth).

Jackpot; a white wolf near Trout Lake.  Still too dark, but a light-colored animal is easier to photograph in the darkness.  This is actually a very light-colored gray wolf, but looked pretty white to me.  It's number 1237, a male of the Mollie's Pack.  I'd never seen this one.  Cool.

Coyotes!  Not sure why, but lots of coyotes were active.  I saw 4, including one crossing the Yellowstone River Bridge.

Black Bears.  Saw several of them, and one with a cub.  The cub was a Cinnamon; mother a Black Bear.

Another.  No problem if they're eating grass.  Maybe vegan:

Late yesterday afternoon I spotted a porcupine walking in a pine thicket.  It came out into the open just enough for me to see those beady eyes.  Looks a bit like a beaver, eh?

Oh, and I hate coyotes...

No, like the cinnamon adult in the first photo, it will always be brown.  Like black labs with mixed-color puppies, there are several morphs in black bears.  Another thing you see is snout color varying from almost white to black.

I don't mind coyotes here.  They're like vultures.  They clean up what's left of a carcass after the wolves and bears get their fill.

Maybe that's a good thing.  Around here though, they will chase deer relentlessly.  They will continue following them until the deer are to tired to keep away from them and the coyote will literally start eating them while the deer continue to walk away. It is really disgusting to see.  I haven't personally but have seen pics from game cameras...  I'll kill every coyote I can here.

Never heard of coyotes killing deer like that.  But dogs in our neighborhood chase our deer relentlessly.  Maybe you can come over and kill a few of them too.

Yep, video was on FB.  Tough crowd!
But if I don't post pics here, those without FB miss the boat.
Not sure where the mother was.  Elk and other deer often bed down babies while they feed elsewhere, maybe to keep from attracting predators to the babies.  The area had streams running through, and she might have been down along one of those (out of sight).  As I explained, rules forbid me from stopping the car, so the pics were from a moving car.  I might have just missed her by passing by too fast.

Have I mentioned how Mrs. Nalt used to feed the wild animals around here, i.e. deer, fox, raccoons, armadillo, opossum, etc. dry cat food every evening?  I told her countless times not to do that because it makes the wildlife dependent upon humans for food.  Not good.  Eventually the raccoons started coming up on the porch looking for the food.  They would mess with anything on the porch that was small enough for them to move.  Broke several things too.  Then during the late spring/early summer the "momma" coons started bringing their babies out and they would follow Momma onto the porch.  Mrs. Nalt, about 3 years ago was going out just after dusk to throw out some food and she saw several of these babies.  She never had any problems with any of them but this one evening as she took a step a young one happened to be right beside her foot and it turned and bit her on the back of her ankle.  Three rounds of painful rabies shots and a huge medical bill and she finally stopped feeding them for the most part.

Preacher, my camera magnifies the bears and wolves at 40X.  Your binoculars are likely 7X.  So the images are often seen in 40 times reality.  I'm not very close to the animals in most cases.  As you saw with the Mountain Goat, this camera and my scope have great magnification.  Once the animals get close or see they're being watched, they usually bolt away.

Like Snow Geese: white or blue.

Sunday May 31, 2020

I drove to Gardiner today for groceries and gasoline.  On the drive through YNP I first encountered a fox (carrying something furry - mouse?) in the darkness along the roadside.  I waved at him.  Then I passed the area where I'd seen wolves.  It was 5:30am, so barely bright enough to see well.  The wolves there had been eating a moose (I heard from Park Rangers).  The big gray wolf was there again (# 1237M).  I waved at him as I went past.  He was in deep grass, tugging at the carcass.  Then lots of bison, pronghorn, and elk; bison blocked the road at several pacles.  While stopped once I took the photo below.  No other photos; day of rest!

This afternoon I saw that the local creek had swollen into a river.  It flooded the campground nearby.  I saw a Moose wading through the campground.  LOL

June 1, 2020.  Long day in Yellowstone.

I watched bears and wolves for 13 hours today, and I'm worn out.  There are 18 puppies in the den where we usually watch wolves; 3 females sharing the den.  Too far away for good pics, but I got a couple just for you.

Humpday June 3, 2020:

Spent the entire day near the wolf den watching action.  Best was an elk chase by 8 wolves at 8am.  Lots of running, splashing, and elk luck.  It took pacle 2 miles away, so we watched through scopes.  No elk were harmed this day.

Pups were born in mid April.  They grow faster than dogs.

June 5, 2020 Friday.

Snow is predicted for this weekend, soooooo not sure what that means for access to the park.  Today started out cold (38), but by late afternoon it was 70.

Lots of the same: wolves and cousins.

This yearling wolf (born 2019) ran right past us.  It was prolly watching us from behind!

It ran about 200m away, then turned right and crossed the flooded marsh.

UINTA GROUND SQUIRREL.  They're everywhere now, but they begin hibernation during July, and don't come out until March.  Saw a wolf catch one today.

RED FOX that was running alongside a meadow.  Saw it while driving home.

June 6, 2020 Saturday.

This is a yearling gray wolf, number 1228F (female).  She's beautiful, and I haven't been able to get an adequate photo.  Today she got within a mile of us.  She's got a VHS collar.

Saw this group of Bighorns, all rams, from almost 2 miles away.  Photo through my scope.  Couple of these would be award winners.

June 7, 2020.  Sunday.

It started snowing late today, so I got back to the cabin earlier than usual.  Tomorrow looks iffy for driving; snowing all day 4-6".

Today started at 5am along Slough Creek.  By 5:15 we'd found a line of wolves headed for the creek.  They got there, and some bedded.  Others explored along the shore.  After a few minutes they began to howl (photo).  Too dark for anything decent in photos, but at least I captured it for y'all.

Later during light rain we saw a Black Bear and cub across the creek about 1.5 miles away.  We watched them for quite a while as they moved north.

Daily when there's an elk or bison carcass.  I've posted videos of it on FB.
The bears are more powerful, but the wolves are quicker.  Usually the bear gets its fill, unless the wolves can harass it enough to drive it away.  They'll bite the bear's butt.  If the bear chases one, the others rush in and eat.

Snow, sleet, and light rain today.  But what a day.  We watched 13 adult wolves parade to the creek this afternoon.  And I watched grizzly and black bears.  Here's a sample:

Tuesday June 9, 2020.

COLD AGAIN.  I saw 2 Mollie's Pack Wolves cross the road at Pebble Creek at 4:30am (in my headlights).

At 5am we had frost on our scopes, and they fogged badly.  But the wolves stayed bedded and in dens until the sun emerged anyhow.  Good puppy show about 7:30.  Lots to see all day (badger, coyote, grizzlies).  A grizzly walked right past the sage den about noon.  It didn’t harm any puppies.  Whew.  They dig dens up and eat puppies sometimes.

THREE DOG DAY: fox, wolf, and coyote.  WOOT!

Color, size, location, collar or not.

For instance, this is Wolf 907F of the Junction Pack.  I photographed her today to show her collar (looks black).  Those with collars have telemetry signals, unique to each.  You see she has a collar and is gray.  This pack has only 3 gray wolves, and 2 have collars.  Her niece is 228F (F for female), and has more dark on her back.  I don't have the telemetry equipment, so I have to learn each one's appearance.

Wednesday June 10, 2020:

Not as cold today, and was sunny, so we sat in lawn chairs and watched the show.  Puppies came out about 7am and played for an hour.  Some of the yearlings wrestled with them, tugged their necks, and got nips in return.  Fun stuff.  Later, about 2:30 a hunting party of 9 adults went to search for elk.  We'll know tomorrow if they had luck.

Hunting party.  They walked through flower meadows, then up into the hills.

This badger spotted another in its territory today, and it raced across a meadow to attack it.  We saw the sage shaking and heard loud squeals and raccoon-like squawks.  This one came out unscathed.  The other ran away.

Thanks for the explanation about how the wolves are identified.  That is pretty cool. I'd also like to know how they are able to live-trap them in order to put collars on them.  As intelligent as wolves are that could prove extremely difficult.

How cool would it have been to be able to watch the two badgers fight?  All really great pics Chech.  Thanks.

June 11, 2020.  Thursday.

Up at 3:15am.  It was worth getting up early.  Nice day, 70 degrees; warm and no rain.  Puppies were all over the hillside early, playing with yearlings and adults, and just enjoying life.  About 8:30 a hunting party of 10 left to the NE.  We watched them challenge a bull bison for a few minutes, then they moved on.  Also saw a lone wolf chase Bighorns down the mountain (and lose the race).
Saw 4 big grizzlies at Footbridge about 6pm: one on a bison carcass, 2 courting, and a big boy just grazing.

These 2 Grizzlies greeted me at 6am while I was watching wolves.  The male was courting the female (she's running in one pic).  No harm;  at least we got to see them up close.

Wow, Wow, Wow, what a trip you have had.  #+ #+ #+

Mrs. J and I just looked at all your pictures and it brought back some wonderful memories of sharing Yellowstone with you last year. You really have gotten some fantastic pictures this year, made us want to pack our suitcase and head out west again. Thanks for sharing again with us. We haven't been doing much lately, Mrs. J finally got the tendons fixed in her left foot that she had been putting off for so long and we've finally reached the point that she can now walk slowly without any type of assistance. Hope the rest of your trip will be as good as as it has been already.

We hadn't seen wolf 1109F until today, because she had a den hidden miles from the other wolves.  Today she showed her defenses when she mixed with the others of the same pack.  She's at right.  She had been bitten by the alpha female from the other den, and now she attacks a male from that den.  He's at left.

Almost daily.  There's one pack that specializes on eating bison.  The grizzlies follow them, and within an hour after a kill the grizzlies take it away.

@ 2: Warmer this week.  Got up to 80 yesterday and sunny.  My suntan is getting like yours.

@ NALT:  Wolves can't kill grizzlies, but they often mob them by biting their butts until they drive them away from a carcass or the den.

It's snowing; been raining all day.  I may start home tomorrow, because the pass on Chief Joseph Highway will be snow-covered.  Better to drive that during daylight than before daybreak Wednesday.

I'll call 2 once I get past Cody, WY (tomorrow or Wed.)...

Saw this on Facebook.  It was a serious query.

"My husband and I are going to visit Yellowstone for one week for the first time, with a 5 year old, two 2 year olds, a 1 year old, and a 6 month old. We will be staying in our pop up camper. What should we bring? How many outfits per child? What’s easiest to eat everyday? What can we see, is there anything closed and not available for viewing? Is swimming allowed in Yellowstone lake, what about fishing? Tia"

You don't see that every day.

Indeed.  That's along the Yellowstone River.  It's often foggy there, and it's a corridor for bears, wolves, elk, etc.  Must have been a great pacle for early explorers to hunt.
