Title: National Signing Day
Post by: lstephen on February 05, 2020, 08:32:34 AM
I know this is more art than science but does anyone have ANY idea how many schollys we have left to award today?  What positions do we have to fill?  I know we have committments from a punter and a placekicker.  ROLL TIDE!!!

Andrew Bone just said this guy is a certainty.  And he'll be Bama's last signee today.

Just as a note, he was already counted in the 26 and our class scoring.

Wait, does that mean that we lose Jayson Jones who is also not signed (but counted in the current 26)?

Dayum.  6 out of the top 8.

Or, half of the top 8 is in the SEC West.  :lol2:

Yes, Damieon George did finally sign today.
Don't worry about numbers.  Saban will address that this afternoon (4pm as I recall).

Biggest surprise to me is Florida.  Mullen seemed to be riding the crest, then this.  I expected them to rocket up ahead of the old dogs of the SEC.

BTW, this final signee, Damieon George, is huge:  6-foot-7, 345 pounds.
He's projected as an offensive tackle.

Georgia got the #1 recruiting ranking this year.  Bama was #2 or #3, depending on the system.

BUT BAMA FINISHED WITH THE HIGHEST AVERAGE PLAYER GRADE IN THE NATION.

Nearly half of the football players on AL.com’s 2020 A-List signed with the University of Alabama, including the top five.  Bama signed 7 of the top 15.

Each summer, AL.com ranks the top senior prospects in the state

Auburn and Clemson each signed two players on the final list.   :lol2:

 :dunno:
The State of Florida is one of the nation's most fertile recruiting ground, and Mullen is a good coach with needs to fill.  Florida's recruiting classes have been creeping up the rankings since Mullen got there, 13, then 9, now 8. But a lot of coaches go to Florida to poach recruits from there.

Other than the Barn, which was the biggest surprise to me, it is hard to supplant the "old dogs" of the SEC, plus Jimbo is a notoriously good recruiter with the State of Texas at his doorstep.

Of course, consistent recruiting year after year, filling needs, building team chemistry, developing players, and player character are all more important factors leading to championship-level play (as compared to one year's class ranking).

I just noticed the kicker came from Colleyville Heritage High school.  It was the sister school in our school district back when I was coaching.

Why Jackson went to TAMU:

https://www.rollbamaroll.com/2020/2/6/21126072/alabama-football-saban-mckinnley-jackson-texas-am-aggies-jimbo-fisher-virginia-tech-justin-fuente?fbclid=IwAR3C3_tvdpvof5FFSpfuf2jn4wlFo3BIoqodixy14QqjOvcOExIqvQ574LA

Quote
Despite saying he made his decision more than a year ago, Jackson kept it close to the vest. His last conversation with Alabama coaches was Tuesday afternoon.

“I told them I wasn’t sure if I’d be signing with them or not,” Jackson said.

Shortly after, he told his family to go get the Texas A&M shirts ready for the ceremony.

“It’s all gig ’em,” Jackson said. “I told coach Jimbo (Fisher) a week ago that I was going to Texas A&M. He said it felt like Christmas, but he couldn’t open the present yet...”

“It wasn’t about the coaches, because I know coaches can come and go. It was about what Texas A&M can do for me as a person and beyond football. It’s all about brand building.”

Quote
First off, it feels as if we always have to note that none of us has one single issue with a player going elsewhere. College football coaches try to pull the best class for their programs, and players look for the best opportunity for them. Jackson felt that A&M was the best fit for him, and that is perfectly fine.

That said, McKinnley is a liar. To be frank, if he’s admitting to blatantly lying to Alabama coaches that “he wasn’t sure” after he had already committed to Jimbo, then there’s no reason to believe that he didn’t actually tell the coaches he was coming. Combine that with choosing a school for “brand building” purposes, and young McKinnley may not be a great fit for the type of character players Saban is looking to bring in.
