Title: Antonio Alfano may enter transfer portal - lots of confusion here!
Post by: Hannibal Lecter, MD on September 13, 2019, 12:26:02 PM
Quote
“I’ve received many messages from the media regarding Antonio,” Alfano’s father, Frank, posted on Twitter Friday morning. "It’s too bad that most of the media only reach out when there’s potentially bad or negative news. I’m confident my following response will answer all of your questions. Antonio’s grandmother recently fell very ill and is still fighting on life support. He is very close with her. Since this illness took effect, Antonio has taken it very hard. He has not attended classes and practices.

“The University of Alabama has been extremely supportive and I couldn’t ask for better support from them. Yesterday, Antonio asked to be placed in the transfer portal to see what his options are. Although he’s in the transfer portal, he still can decide to remain at the University of Alabama. My opinion is that Antonio should stay at the University of Alabama. However he’s an adult and it’s his decision. Antonio knows that his family has & will always be there for him.”

Well I pray his grandmother will find some ease of her illness.
I do however, think if transfer is more on his mind than coming back to the family and work for what he wants at the next level then he should go on and leave. JMHO. RTR!

Who is this kid and what position does he play?

Let me guess, inside linebacker?  :wall:

Either his father is lying or Coach Saban is lying.

You decide.

Bama's top-rated recruit last year.  The 6-foot-4, 285-pounder from Colonia, New Jersey, was highly sought after coming out of high school, and has what it takes to be a star in college football.

"Potential to be a very athletic-framed 300-pounder on the next level. Plays with good leverage with an explosive first step. Has violent hands and aggressive mentality. Has the temperament you want on the defensive line. Highly competitive. Physical tackler through the ball carrier. Possesses elite edge athleticism and freakish combine testing numbers. Also has versatility and strength to play inside. Sheds blocks and attacks double teams effectively. Pursuit speed is rare but effort needs to be more consistent on plays away from him. Upper tier Power 5 multi-year starter with first- or second-round potential."

So he's grief-stricken and decides to check out his college options?   :-\

Very sad situation with Alfano. I'm guessing he got disciplined, which kicked in home sickness. It will be a shame to lose him, but if he leaves; next man up.

September 19th update:
https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/2019/09/nick-saban-antonio-alfano-basically-quit-on-team.html

He has not formally entered the transfer portal (YET).

Quote
Saban: "Quit going to class, quit coming here. We tried to encourage him. We tried to help him. We tried to set up counseling sessions with him to help him every way that we could. All of those things are still available to him if he wants them. But he didn’t respond to any of the things, so until he responds, you just have to assume the guy quit.”

Alfano’s father, Frank, tweeted Friday that his son had asked to enter the NCAA transfer portal. However, Alfano has yet to enter the portal.

Yes it is sad. He has a great chance to learn from the best and he doesn't want it, so I guess all I can do is wish him well. RTR!

I’m praying that he turns around. It’s happened before. Drake was iffy for a while.

CNS said he quit. I do not expect him back. We need winners, not quitters.

Saban also said there is an avenue open to Alfano if he wants to stay.
That was why I referenced Alfano staying.  I don't know why Alfano wasn't attending classes or practices, and until that's clarified I remain optimistic that he can help our team beat the crap out of the opponents.  Maybe he will suddenly mature and meet his obligations.

If it hasn't happened already, at some point he will be kicked out of the University for missing too many classes, tests, etc.  At least I think that's a policy.  Maybe I'm wrong about that.  But if that happens, then he has to be reinstated as a student before he can become a student athlete.

Then there is the matter of getting 'right' with the coaches & the team.  That's gonna be a challenge.

His dad sounds like an OK guy and it's hard to know what makes Antonio tick.  Maybe his dad can't figure it out either.

But IMHO, too many problems here with one guy.  This team has enough problems already.

Is he bitter, a sitter, a hitter, have jitters, or just a quitter?

CNS and I think he is a quitter.

“I just know the guy basically quit," coach Nick Saban said Wednesday. "Quit going to class, quit coming here. We tried to encourage him. We tried to help him. We tried to set up counseling sessions with him to help him every way that we could. All of those things are still available to him if he wants them. But he didn’t respond to any of the things, so until he responds, you just have to assume the guy quit.”
