Title: NFL Draft
Post by: Hannibal Lecter, MD on April 25, 2019, 01:32:15 PM
The weather is not supposed to cooperate with the opening of the NFL Draft tonight in Music City. The stage is covered of course, but the fan areas are not. There is talk of keeping it outside if there is rain but no lightning, but the NFL spared no expense and have a complete indoor set up ready to go.

Here are some projections I saw from looking at 6-7 mock drafts:

Quinnen Williams - the projections for him are fairly consistent with everyone having him between 3rd and 5th. (3rd - Jets, 4th - Raiders, 5th - Bucs) The Jets or Raiders might not be a horrible situation.

Jonah Williams - predictions here vary much more, but the most common slot seems to be 9th. I saw as high as 6th and as low as 16th. I'd be surprised if he went higher than 9th.

Josh Jacobs - a lot of people think the Raiders will pick him up (they have both the 24th and 27nd picks). A few have him slipping out of the first round. I didn't see anyone pick him to go higher than the Raiders at 24th.

Irv Smith, Jr - a few people believe the Patriots will pick him at 32nd, although most mock drafts have Noah Fant (Iowa) going before Irv, and Irv going in the 2nd round. This Patriots pick will likely depend on who is left at QB.

With Josh Jacobs' pick, Saban officially surpasses Paterno as coach with the most NFL first round draft picks.

https://247sports.com/college/alabama/Article/Alabama-Football-coach-Nick-Saban-passes-Joe-Paterno-for-most-first-round-NFL-draft-picks-131538023/

Nick Saban -- 34
Joe Paterno -- 33
Bobby Bowden -- 32
Woody Hayes -- 27

These numbers don't include players that Saban recruited and developed (LSU, Mich State) that were drafted in the first round after he left.

He can just use the pedestal that the talking heads have placed him on.  They just need a Center that can snap the ball that high...

Beginning to see why Saban was pissed at the DBs leaving early.

Quinnen Williams, Round 1, #3, New York Jets

Jonah Williams, 1 11, Cincinnati Bengals

Josh Jacobs 1, 24, Oakland Raiders

Irv Smith Jr., 2, 50, Minnesota Vikings

Ross Pierschbacher, 5, 153, Washignton Redskins

Mack Wilson, 5, 155, Cleveland Browns

Isaiah Buggs, 6, 192, Pittsburgh Steelers

Undrafted Bama players who signed afterwards:

Cornerback Saivion Smith is signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jamey Mosley is headed to the New York Jets, where he will be teammates with his older brother.

Lester Cotton is signing with the Oakland Raiders.

UGA had 7 players drafted. The most since Kirby Smart arrived. Fields also transferred to Ohio St. They lose a lot.

There's no guarantee that another year would have improved the draft stock of these guys, but it makes their early departures even more frustrating. Bama loses skill and experience and these guys, at best, sit on a bench next year.

Williams, Williams, and Jacobs are going to get paid. Sadly, they all landed on perennially dysfunctional teams. Hopefully they play well for a few years and get somewhere better down the road.

Harris and Smith are probably the big winners when it comes to team success. The Vikings are loaded on offense, which should create plenty of opportunities for Smith to do well and the team to make a playoff run (which upsets me because I hate the Vikings). The Patriots are the Patriots. The potential downside is that Brady's age and Robert Kraft's legal troubles may negatively impact the team this year.

I haven't written the Bengals off yet.  They made the playoffs 5 straight years, 2011-15, and hired a new coach after the past three subpar seasons.  I wouldn't put them in the same category as the Jets or Raiders (who are moving to Vegas next year).

The DBs should have stayed:  Mack Wilson to the Browns, Saivion Smith undrafted to the Jags.

Well, Jimbo was talking after draft results were in.  Saban was speaking before the draft, knowing that probably some of the early departures might not have the success they thought, but not wanting to limit their chances either.
