Title: Bama Softball
Post by: 2Stater on April 17, 2019, 04:55:48 AM
The ladies travel to Gainesville for a 3 day weekend series against Florida. Very important series. I sure hope Fouts is good to go. She looked great the 5 innings she pitched against Ga Monday night. We need her.

Between her and Cornell, I think we could realistically win 2 of 3.

I never thought I would be saying this at the beginning of the year, and especially not when Fouts got injured, but the offense seems to be more of a concern than the pitching.

True. I hope they can step it up down the stretch here.

From where this team started this year with no starting pitcher, I would call it a gem of a job that both pitchers did. Beating Florida at home is not easy and they did it twice yesterday. I wonder when is the last time they lost a double header at home except when Georgia swept them.

Krystal Goodman continues to pitch well.  I thought today may have been her best job yet considering the competition. She had some key strikeouts with runners on base.

At least the hay is in the barn for this team's rankings going into the tournament.  Do you think a series loss to either of these really hurts?

We're probably locked into hosting both the regional and super regional round at this point.  A better seeding in the WCWS wouldn't hurt though.

Ky wins 4-1. Fouts couldn't get a call all night at the knees. As a result, she had to throw it down the middle and they pounded it. The Ky pitcher had no problem with those pitches.

The strike out call on Claire Jenkins that was 6 inches outside and six inches high was the straw that broke the camel's back. I'm surprised Coach Murphy wasn't thrown out of the game. That ump should never be allowed to call another game.

Alabama has eliminated 10 SEC teams chance of winning the SEC regular season championship. Only Ole Miss and LSU are in contention with 4 conference games each to be played. Alabama travels to LSU next week.

Alabama    15-5
Ole Miss     13-6   1.5 game back
LSU           14-7    1.5 game back

LSU is playing out of conference this weekend. Only 3 SEC games left to play, all against Bama.

Ole Miss has todays game against UT and 3 on the road at UGA next week.

Alabama still has work to do.

That umpire must be the same one as Friday night. Turrible! He must have something against Claire Jenkins. He totally destroyed her in this series.

I have to put much of the blame on Murph too, Cheek is a good hitter for Ky, but not good enough to intentionally walk, with a runner on first. The next batter got a base hit which knocked in the go ahead run, which we weren't able to overcome. Very tough loss.

They have a huge series with LSU this weekend.

Yep, likely for all the SEC regular season marbles.

Bama wins the regular season championship with two wins. LSU wins with a sweep of Bama or two wins and one Ole Miss loss. Ole Miss wins if LSU beats us twice and they sweep UGA.

As well as we have played all year hosting a Super Regional is not a lock. If we lose our last two series and do not win the SEC Tournament we might be in trouble. Win the LSU series and we are in good shape.

So, with the win Friday night Bama clinches a share of their sixth SEC regular season title.  Another win this weekend gives Alabama the championship outright. If LSU wins twice, the teams would finish with identical 16-8 conference records, and would be recognized as co-champions, with tie-breaker scenarios only coming into effect to determine seeding for the SEC Tournament.

If LSU wins twice, the teams would finish with identical 16-8 conference records, and would be recognized as co-champions, with tie-breaker scenarios only coming into effect to determine seeding for the SEC Tournament.

 :popcorn2:

The SEC Network said that if LSU won the last 2 games, they would be the #1 seed in the SEC tournament, I guess because of head-to-head competition.

The tie breaker is head-to-head but does not affect who wins the regular season championship. Should LSU take the series 2-1 LSU and Bama share the title. The tie breaker decides SEC tournament seeding. Bama just needs to win the series and take the title out right.

Bama goes, hit, caught stealing, walk, hit and then two  straight pop-outs.  0-0 LSU coming to bat.

Cornell pitching today.  Gets the first 2 batter, then hits the  next.  However, the 4th batter fly out to LF.  0-0

Bama gets a leadoff double, then a walk,  sac to 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.  The next batter walks to load the bases, with the top of the order coming up.  Brown walks to bring in the first run keeping the bases loaded with 1 out.  Tow walks to bring in the 2nd run with Hemphill coming to the plate with 1 out.  There is a pitching change for LSU.  Hemphill walks to bring in the 3rd run.  Schroder at bat with one out and strikes out.  Sides at the plate, pops out to short to end the inning.  Going into the bottom of the 2nd, Bama up 3-0.  This umpire is not a pitcher's umpire.

Yes, he does.  Not sure what a strike is sometimes.  The camera angle isn't the best so some pitches look better than they are.

LSU 5,6, 7 coming to bat.  First batter strikes out.  Second batter grounds to third for the 2nd out.  The third batter lines to 2nd for the 3rd out.  Bama coming to bat in the top of the 3rd.

Title: Re: Bama Softball

Jenkins up for Bama,  strikes out.   Dykes at bat, fly out to center.  Morgan up to bat, homers to right field.  Wallace at bat, singles to right.  Leadoff hitter Brown up to bat, (Wallace steals 2nd) Fly out to center.  Bama 4-0.  The umpire may need security when he leaves today.

Title: Re: Bama Softball

LSU up in the bottom of the 3rd and the first batter fly, out  center. Second batter, fly out to right.  Top of the order, now up, strikes outs.  Going into the 4th,  Bama up 4-0.

Title: Re: Bama Softball

Tow up to bat, leads off with a hit.  Hemphill up to bat,  grounds to third into a double play.  Schroder up to bat, strikes out to end the inning.  Going to the bottom of the 4th,  Bama still leads 4-0.

Title: Re: Bama Softball

LSU up to bat, first batter, gets the first hit of the day for LSU.  Second batter, singles to center.  Two on no outs.  Third batter pops out to 2nd.  Fourth batter up with runners on 1st and 2nd, bloops a single to left to load the bases.  Next hitter, fly out to left field deep enough for LSU to score their 1st run.  Two outs.  Next batter pop out to the shortstop.  Going into the top of the 5th Bama up 4-1.

We did good getting out of the 4th only allowing one run. We have the 5,6,7 hitters coming to bat in the top of the 5th.

Sides leads off for Bama and walks.  Jenkins up to bat, fails to sacrifice, but is hit by the pitch to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs.  Dykes up to bat, sacrifice the runners to 2nd and third while Sides tries to score and is thrown out at home for the double play.   Morgan up to bat with a runner on 3rd, back to the pitcher of the 3rd out.  I don't know if the coach sent the runner or they did it on their own, a bad play either way.  Bama up 4-1 going into the bottom of the 5th.

LSU's first batter fly out deep to center.  Second batter, doubles to left-center.  Third batter, top of the order, grounds out to short and the runner advances to 3rd with 2 outs.  Fourth batter, bloops a hit to left center to score the run.  Firth batter up with a runner on first, pops out to 2nd for the final out.  Bama lead cut to 4-2 going into the 6th.

Title: Re: Bama Softball

Wallace leads off for Bama, grounds out to 1st.  Leadoff hitter Brown up to bat, and tries to bunt but is called out at first, two away.  Third batter, check swing to third for the 3rd out.  4-2 going into the bottom of the 6th.

LSU up to bat with the number 4 hitter who leads off with a home run.  Number 5 hitter up, pitching change as Foust come in, ground to second for the 1st out.  Number 6 hitter up for LSU, hits it back to the pitcher for the 2nd out.  Number 7 hitter up, fly out to center for the third out.  4-3 going into the top of the 7th.

Bama has 3, 4, 5 up in the inning.  Hemphill leads off, grounds out to 3rd for the first out.  Pinch hitter Hardy up to bat, grounds to the pitcher for the 2nd out.  Sides up to bat, strikes out to end the inning.  4-3 going into the bottom of the 7th.

Great accomplishment for the ladies. No one expected them to pull off winning the SEC championship, or to even be this competitive this year. Montana Fouts is going to be a top notch pitcher for Alabama. She pretty much already is.

I'd love for them to complete the sweep tomorrow. Regardless, it's on to the SEC tournament, regionals and super-regionals. Roll Tide!!!

Bottom of the 4th LSU lead off hitter hits a solo home run.  They then load the bases but are held scoreless.  Bama didn't change pitchers, so it looks like they are going to let Goodman pitch herself out of trouble.

Top of the 6 Bama gets the lead off hitter on. She is sacrificed to 2nd.  With 2 outs the runner tries to steal 3rd and is thrown out.  Not a smart play as you are in scoring position.  Going into the bottom of the 6th 5-1 Bama.

Should have been a call third strike. No gray area. It was A STRIKE. Umpire causes a walk with 2 outs and the next batter hits a double, knocking in 2 runs. I'm so fed up with the fricking umps in these games. Absolutely pitiful.

Going to the bottom of the 7th, Bama down 2-1. This is just ridiculous.

Nope. I've watched enough of these to know that the umps this year truly suck. We will definitely get a regional at home and if successful, get a super-regional at home. I just hate watching us get beat because of rotten calls.

The ump was terrible but he was bad for both teams. We got beat because we only scored 1 run and only got 2 hits. We left too many runners on base. We did not play well offensively in this tournament but our pitching got us to the finals with a chance to win it all. Our bats need to show back up for us to make it to the CWWS.

Rule about a runner getting hit by a ball being out.

Quote
The ball is dead. The batter-runner is awarded first base (unless she is the one touched by the batted ball), and other runners advance only if forced. ... The runner is not out, however, if she is touched by a batted ball after it passes through or by an infielder (except the pitcher).

Coach Murphy thought the ball passed by UF first baseman before it hit the runner. It was not a reviewable play. The umps blew that call at a critical time.

I did not know the bold part of that rule.  It is a good addition since you expect that fielder to make a play and stop the ball, and even if they don't they at least had the opportunity to do so without any interference.

Wow! Bama got screwed with an 8 seed. Florida got a 5 seed. We swept them at their place and got screwed out of beating them last night. Minnesota got a 7 seed. We beat them twice head to head. Arizona is ahead of us. We beat them 6-1. GEEZ!!!

Don't get me wrong, if we win, we get a super regional at home, but this seeding is total BS!

Title: Re: Bama Softball
Post by: 2Stater on May 12, 2019, 08:45:44 PM
Even the announcers can't believe Bama was an 8 seed. Weak-assed explanation was the OOC schedule. We were 32-0. We were 9-1 against top 10 teams. Apparently, that doesn't mean crap. The selection committee is just as inept as the officiating crew from last night.

The Bama hate is glaringly strong.  >:( >:( >:(

Title: Re: Bama Softball
Post by: Chechem on May 13, 2019, 04:55:00 AM
These dipsticks (the selection committee) likely penciled in Bama and Florida before the game as a 5 and 8 seed, expecting Bama to win.  When Florida won they simply flipped the seedings.  I doubt they even looked at the implications of it otherwise.  Bastids.

So how did the selection committee justify ranking Alabama so low? It was the primary question from the ESPN crew discussing this year’s bracket. The answer they got was that Alabama’s non-conference strength of schedule ranked 106th. Bama was 32-0 in non-conference games. The committee (presumably with great smugness, like almost everything done wrong by anything NCAA) pointed out that Minnesota had the No. 1 non-conference strength of schedule. Never mind that Alabama defeated the Gophers in head-to-head meetings – twice.

Alabama has the best record of any of the top 16 seeds at 52-7. The Crimson Tide was regular season champion of the SEC, which has the No. 1 RPI in the nation. Bama was 9-1 vs. top 10 RPI teams. Alabama’s 12 wins against top 25 teams was fourth most in the nation.

As for that non-conference strength of schedule argument, how about the SEC strength of schedule. Not only did it have the highest RPI of any conference, a glance at the 64-team bracket will reveal that all 13 SEC teams were selected for the national championship tournament, six of them No. 1 seeds. It is the third consecutive season all 13 SEC softball teams were selected for the national tournament.

There was also some drama in the Auburn game.  The Auburn pitcher, Ashlee Swindle, got hit by a "come backer."  It hit the ground and bounced up hitting her in the forehead.  She lay/sat on the mound for several minutes while being tended to by the Auburn and Arizona medical staffs and was then carted off to get treatment.  Haven't heard how she is now...

Seems a bit extreme.  Should all baseball infielders also be required to wear face masks?

I've seen this type of injury, though worse, in baseball.

Certainly baseballs are harder, travel faster and can do more damage than a softball.

The only thing different about softball is the pitcher is substantially closer to the batter than in baseball.  Perhaps they could move the pitcher back, or the pitcher can wear a face mask.  Many softball pitchers do wear face masks -- it is optional, not mandatory.

Yeah, it probably is a bit extreme.  However, many leagues for kids are starting to require masks for infielders.  It is just a matter of time before they progress upward to middle school, high school, college, etc.  FTR, I would not oppose masks for infielders in baseball either. But the rubber in softball is at 43 feet (baseball is 60' I believe) and the bases are at 60' as opposed to 90' in baseball. Significant differences IMO...

Bama was up 4-0 when I started watching.  They quickly gave up the 3-run HR and it mostly went down hill from there.  >:(  Maybe I won't watch today's game so hopefully they will pull it out so they can get back to the WCWS... :wall: :wall: :wall:

That's because Bama got screwed in the seeding for the supers. Would most likely have to end up playing them down the road anyway.

I just listened to the post game press conference. Coach Murphy said the program is in it's 23rd year and this is our 12th trip to the CWWS. Only three teams (Arizona, UCLA & Bama) have made it more than 50% of the time.

Can't that be a good thing though?  I mean, if the umpires are showing tendencies to call against the pitchers it should force the pitchers to throw better pitches.  Of course, the other side of that blade is that the hitters get more target practice too...  :dunno:

It's a good thing for a hitter, but for pitchers who like to work the corner, it is tough.  That is why these umpires are called hitter's umps.

I watched a lot of softball over the weekend and I thought the same thing. In all games I saw the strike zones were very tight.

After watching several games over the weekend l believe the umps selectively enforced the batters box rule against Elissa Brown. I saw slappers on several teams step out of the box and not be called. I especially paid attention to the Tennessee/Florida game and saw slappers on both teams stepping out but not called. Kind of looks like Brown was singled out.

I would not be surprised if the coach from Texas had seen this and ask the umpires to pay close attention when she came to bat.

That certainly happened.  Murphy was trying to get the same call on one of TX's batters that bats at the bottom of the order.

Another great win. It'll take everything they've got to pull it off. Beating a dominate Oklahoma team twice in their own back yard is a daunting task to say the least.

At least they smacked the selection committee right in the face with that soul crushing of Florida.

Coach Murphy said he had no problem playing in Oklahoma City each year. It is the nicest softball stadium in the country and that's why we play there. He went on to say if anyone has a bunch of money and wants to build a better stadium in B'ham he would be all of it.

Title: Re: Bama Softball

The weather delay on Friday that pushed our second game with Zona to end at almost 1:00am Saturday morning made for a short nights rest ahead of a long day of softball. The team was obviously tired but they never lacked effort. This team should be very proud. They finished 60-10. That is only the 4th 60 win season in program history and the first since 2012. Winning the SEC regular season and making a strong run in the WCWS is not a bad season.

I believe we only lose two starters to graduation. Reagan Dykes and Merris Schroder. Caroline Hardy is a bench player that we will miss her bat. Other than those three we have a lot of talent coming back including our pitching. We will not be picked to finish 8th in the SEC next year.

The #8 seeding was idiotic, and our girls proved it.  It was also a disservice to Oklahoma, who had to play us 3 times and now has to go into the final series at a disadvantage.  It is critical to get the seeding right because it impacts ALL of the teams in the tournament.
