Oh, okay.  Sir, I apologize for misjudging your intent in posting a new thread.  I thought we always started with something about Braves ... where they left off last year; but now I completely comprehend your honest intent.  Just imagine my confusion!

I actually looked for that thread to revive it, but couldn't find it. You'll just have to forgive me.....or not.  :lol2:

With that score, I figured Bryce Harper must have gone all MVP on us but saw he was 0-2 with a walk and 2 strikeouts. WTH?  :dunno:

The Braves are starting to come around a bit. They beat the Reds in Cincinnati last night 3-1. They are now 12-11 on the season and a half game behind the Phillies and Mets for first.

True story, Cincinnati's starting catcher, Tucker Barnhart, was the catcher I threw to, for Pensacola, when I had the honor of throwing out the first pitch a few years ago.

The Braves are enjoying a 2-1/2 game lead over the Phillies after winning 2 of 3 games this weekend.  Sunday's game was great.  The Braves stomped a mud-hole in the Phillies then walked it dry winning 15-1.

Wooot!!! How about the weekend series between the Padres and the Rockies; 92 total runs were scored between them.  :o

The boys got spanked yesterday.  Lost 10-2.  They were trailing 10-0 going into the bottom of the 9th but Freeman and Josh Donaldson had back-to-back homers to spoil the shutout...

Title: Re: Atlanta Braves

The Braves won the series yesterday by beating the Mets 7-2.  Freddie Freeman hit a 2-run HR to start the scoring for the Braves in the bottom of the 1st but then not much after that until they scored 3 runs in the 6th.  Tyler Flowers made a really great play at home plate when a runner was coming in to try and score.  He caught the throw from Nick Markakis in right field.  In the process of catching it though he wound up flat on his back.  The runner tried to jump over him but Tyler simply reached up and tagged him out.

They are heading to D.C. for a weekend series against the Nationals now.

The Braves are playing very sound baseball right now:  Good hitting with power, good base running, very good defense and adequate pitching.  That's a formula for winning a lot of regular season games, IF they can stay healthy.

After 79 games the Braves in NL are:

HITTING

3rd in homers (122) & bating average (.266)
2nd in runs scored
9th in stolen bases (28)
8th in strike outs (673)
5th in walks received (288)
8th in doubles
4th in triples
2nd on-base percentage

PITCHING

6th in ERA (4.28)
5th in saves (21)
15th in walks allowed, last in NL (297)
7th in strikeouts

FIELDING

8th in fielding percentage
10th in errors

2nd in wins with 46
Being the most in NL in issuing walks will come back to bite the Braves if they make playoffs.
Overall, the Braves seem well-balanced in hitting, pitching, & fielding.

I really haven't thought much about it.  How were they picked years ago?  Maybe go by player statistics and polling either sports writers and coaches?  Maybe polling the players from all teams?  Not really sure...

Fan votes are only part of the process. The starting players are selected for the All-Star teams by a vote of other players, baseball writers and by the fans, either voting at games, or via the Internet, whilst the remainder of the team are selected by the two team managers (who are the two managers who represented the leagues in the previous World Series).

Quote
Markakis was popped by a 90-mph fastball in the sixth inning after exited after rounding the bases. The early returns are discouraging, and Markakis seems likely to end up on the injured list, possibly for an extended amount of time.

Earlier in the day, Swanson didn’t make his anticipated return to the lineup due to a heel he injured earlier in the week. He also appears headed for the IL, barring a positive change Saturday. Such would sideline two of the team’s pillars.

The Atlanta Braves made some significant additions to their bullpen before Wednesday’s trade deadline adding Shane Greene, Chris Martin and Mark Melancon to the mix. The additions come not a moment too soon as Atlanta’s current bullpen makeup has seen increased struggles of late.

Braves get a rare win against the Dodgers, but suffer another injury. Inciarte has a bad hammy and joins Swanson, Markakis and Riley on the IL.

The good news is that the Nats lost in a wild one to the Brewers.

The Braves did win.  Acuna got hit in the lower back with the 1st pitch of the game just 1 year and 5 days after he was intentionally hit by a pitch last year during a HR streak.  Snitker complained and was ejected.  Both teams were warned.  This was after the very first pitch.  Later in the game another Braves batter was hit.  Crickets from the Umps... So what is a warning if there is no tooth to back it up?  :dunno:

It's subjective.  Depends a little on the count (who intentionally hits someone on an 0-2 or 1-2 or even 2-2 count?), the pitch (FB vs breaking), and the game situation.

I was listening to the game on the radio.  The announcers were pretty animated about the Umps not backing up their earlier warning.  One of them did say that there was no obvious intent however...

Josh Donaldson scored 1 run too.  By my count, that is the 5 runs it took to beat the Jays... Other than getting more singles, doubles and triples what am I missing?  :dunno:

Bullpen has been lots better since Melancon, Greene & Martin have joined the teams. Braves have held their own against Nats, Dodgers recently.

True. They haven't been blowing up nearly as bad over the last few weeks.

9-4 final in the Nat's favor... While we still hold a 9 game lead over the Nationals we have a tough stretch coming with 4 straight starting tomorrow against the Phillies in Philly followed by 3 against the Nationals in D.C. then 3 more against the Phillies in Atlanta.   I don't think the schedule is getting much easier just yet...

If the Braves can sweep the Nats (I hope they will but don't expect it) then by Sunday night the magic number will be at 2. Freddie Freeman left the game last night in the 4th inning after aggravating a bone spur in his left elbow.  After the game he said it wasn't a big deal and he hopes to play again today or tomorrow.  We definitely need him...

Yeah, the Braves won but it was a costly win IMO.  Charlie Culberson was pinch-hitting and on the first pitch tried to bunt.  The pitch was high and fast (90+) and hit him just below his right eye.  He was on the ground for quite some time with blood streaming from his nose.  They managed to get him up and on a cart to take him away.

Then, to make matters worse, the ump called a strike on him even though the ball hit him in the face (should have been awarded 1st base).

The NL playoff teams will be Dodgers, Braves, Cardinals, Nationals, and Brewers.  Most likely scenario:

Nats and Brewers play the 1-game "play-in" for the Wild Card.  Winner of that plays the Dodgers.

Braves play the Cards the first round.

Soroka pitched 7 innings - gave up two hits, and the run came after a double and two sacrifices in the second inning. He retired 17 straight batters after the double.

The bullpen played with fire in the bottom of the eighth but got out of it. Melancon gave up a double in the bottom of the 9th.

Bottom of 8th:

Braves bullpen had shut out Cardinals for 8 straight innings, and Cardinals were without a base runner for 8 straight hitters, then...

Leadoff ground out.

Cardinals get a broken-bat double, then Ozuna called out on strikes.  That double left the bat at just 65mph.

Bloop off top of glove of leaping Freddie (at first base) to tie the game 4-4.  That hit left the bat at just 63mph.

Bottom of 9th:

1.  Cardinals' leadoff hitter gets a bunt for a hit.   :dunno:

2.  Pop out, but error trying to throw out the runner returning to 1st.  Ball hits the runner.  Runner takes 2nd.
 >:( >:(

3.  Pop out to right field.  Runner stays at 2nd.

4.  Struck him out!   :panic:

Playoff Braves are NOT the same team as before they clinched the NLeast. I want that team back because they were hungry.  They WANTED to win...

True!  I DID NOT enjoy the Braves win in game 3...

The Rays played lights out last night.  The Astros will be heavy favorites in game 5, but the Rays have damaged the Astros chance against the Yankees by stressing their pitching staff.

Someone delete this thread.  None of us want to see anything baseball related at this point.

I am guessing the Braves got beat from the descriptions here. It is an average October for them. They always choke. RTR!

Atlanta choked big.  It was ugly.  Cardinals scored 10 runs in the first inning and coasted to a 13-1 win.

Weird things happen in sports.  They could replay that game 1000 times, and the Cardinals would likely not score 10 runs in the first inning again.  Folty actually wasn't getting hit HARD to start off the inning, and it was really a lot of bad luck.  Swanson not being able to get a handle on Goldy's grounder to throw out the runner at 3rd.  Ozuna getting a weak flair to the opposite field off a ball down and away that would normally not be hit, etc.

Things just spiraled out of control.  If anyone choked, maybe it was Fried.  After the 10 run first, there was just no energy left.  It didn't help that the guy the Cardinals had on the mound had the 3rd lowest post-AS game ERA in the history of baseball.
