Title: Spring-Practice Reports
Post by: Chechem on March 27, 2019, 05:53:22 AM
Tuesday March 27th:

https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/2019/03/alabama-practice-report-notes-on-terrell-lewis-o-line-more.html

Outside linebacker Terrell Lewis was present on the field. But he was not equipped with a brace on his right knee and didn’t appear to be participating in any drills.

Alabama continues to tinker with the offensive line as redshirt senior Matt Womack appeared to be idle Tuesday. With Womack watching, the Tide featured one alignment that included Alex Leatherwood at left tackle, Evan Neal at left guard, Chris Owens at center, Emil Ekiyor at right guard and Jedrick Wills Jr. at right tackle....

A lot of new players coming in. Will be interesting to see who the immediate contributors will be.

As always, the O-line seems to be in flux.

One thing for sure that list of the O-line is some mighty fine names. Just wonder how powerful they will be? RTR!

March 27th (Wednesday):

With one of Alabama’s outside linebackers from the Maryland-DC area set to be “very, very limited” for the rest of the spring, another one of the team’s outside linebackers from that area will get even more opportunities to prove himself during the next few weeks — Eyabi Anoma...

“He’s doing a good job,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said of Anoma Wednesday. “He’s working hard. He’s learning a lot. I think he’s responding very well to (outside linebackers coach Sal Sunseri) with Sal coaching him. He’s doing much better in school...

Thursday March 28th:

https://collegesportsmaven.io/alabama/bamacentral/alabama-gears-up-for-first-spring-scrimmage-5q7c08WNxUKinuhaf7QoWg/

The forecast for Saturday’s closed scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium is for 80 degrees and scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Redshirt junior Terrell Lewis (knee) was in uniform and only observing drills. Junior Ben Davis (shin splints) was on the field for stretching in a black, no-contact jersey, but went inside before reporters were allowed out for the observation periods.

Junior offensive lineman Matt Womack was also limited and watching drills.

Scrimmage notes from AL.com's Matt Zenitz:

Quote
While the scrimmage was closed to the media, here are some notes based on information gathered through sources:

— It sounds like it was a good day for Alabama’s running back group — Najee Harris, Brian Robinson and also redshirt freshman Jerome Ford. Ford had at least a couple plays that gained nice yardage, including one against the first-team defense during which he broke tackles from safety Jared Mayden and star inside linebacker Dylan Moses.

— Freshman wide receiver John Metchie was a standout. He had two touchdowns. Former five-star recruit Eyabi Anoma was one of the standout guys defensively. Word is that the sophomore outside linebacker was consistently disruptive as a pass rusher and it sounds like he was credited with a few sacks.

— Word is that backup quarterback Mac Jones looked good. The redshirt sophomore threw at least one touchdown.

— Matt Womack didn’t scrimmage, so Evan Neal — the 6-foot-7, 360-pound five-star freshman offensive lineman — worked at left guard with the first-team offense. People at Alabama believe Neal has big-time potential.

— Redshirt freshman Cameron Latu continues to work at tight end and had a few catches during the scrimmage, including a catch-and-run of about 15 yards against the Tide’s first-team defense. Walk-on tight end Giles Amos had a touchdown catch against the first-team defense while working with the first-team offense.

— Mayden was the first-team safety next to Xavier McKinney. It sounds like veteran defensive back Shyheim Carter, who is working back from offseason sports hernia surgery, worked with the first-team defense in dime and then mostly with the twos when he was at safety.

Monday April 1st:

Alabama was back on the practice field today after Saturday’s scrimmage. The Crimson Tide was working inside despite it being a nice day in Tuscaloosa, maybe because some rainy weather on Sunday had soaked the fields.

Linebacker Ben Davis was walking out of practice in a black jersey as we walked in. Shyheim Carter was there with the DBs, also in black. Terrell Lewis was with the OLBs in a black jersey.

Offensive lineman Matt Womack and tight end Kedrick James were dressed out and participating with their respective position groups.

...Deonte Brown is NOT in great shape at the moment. ...It may not be a huge deal at the moment since he’s suspended the first four games next season...

DB Jalyn Armour-Davis, who had a season-ending knee injury in the fall, has been practicing with a sleeve on his injured leg and a knee brace over it.

The continued mention of Ben Davis is almost comical at this point.

Cornbread being out of shape is concerning.  He came into college at almost 400lbs, and it took him 1-2 years to get into the right shape.  He's got a lot of talent, but I hope his suspension hasn't demotivated him.  He's obviously prone to lapses.

I think this is probably his last year to prove he can do something. I hope he does.

Wednesday April 3rd:

— Henry Ruggs was back practicing. Ruggs had missed the scrimmage on Saturday and then practice on Monday.

— Anfernee Jennings and Eyabi Anoma were the first group of outside linebackers during drills. Chris Allen and freshman Kevin Harris were the second group. Jarez Parks and walk-on William Cooper made up the third group...

Second scrimmage: Saturday April 6th:

The biggest news of the day was the injury of offensive lineman Jedrick Wills. In his press conference following the scrimmage, Nick Saban reported “Jedrick Wills sprained his ankle today. We don’t know the extent of the injury. We’re doing an MRI. ...”

There was some early speculation that it was an Achille’s injury. However with Saban saying they “wouldn’t let him come back,” it sounds like Wills wanted to return to the scrimmage. Hopefully, this is a sign that the injury is not as severe as it could be.

After Wills went out, Matt Womack slid over to tackle and Emil Ekiyor took Womack’s place at guard.

There were reports that backup quarterback Mac Jones had a rough day, throwing four picks. Saban commented that some of the interceptions (not specifying whose) were “off of peoples hands, tipped balls” ...
Tua Tagovailoa, who threw a pair himself, had a ball picked off by Jared Mayden that walk-on tight end Giles Amos let go through his hands...

Taulia Tagovailoa took over the second team after Jones’ fourth pick. It would be a surprise if Jones did not line-up as the starter for the second team offense for the A-Day Game...

True freshman DJ Dale was lined up as first team nose tackle for Alabama second scrimmage. Saban had good things to say about him.  “He’s got good initial quickness, good power, seems to be pretty conscientious, shows a little maturity about being able to go out there and do his job.” .....

What Saban said about Saturday scrimmage:

https://collegesportsmaven.io/alabama/bamacentral/5-things-that-stood-out-from-nick-saban-s-scrimmage-press-conference-F4S8PrSFlkuKwT-1EFpa9g/

DJ Dale is getting reps with the first-team defense.  ...The early enrollee was going through individual drills at nose tackle between Raekwon Davis and LaBryan Ray. He also praised Justin Eboigbe, who was playing with the second unit at end, but said the following about the true freshman Dale:

“DJ is playing some with the ones at nose. He’s got good initial quickness, good power, strikes, seems to be pretty conscientious, shows a little maturity about being able to go out there and do his job.”

RB Trey Sanders isn’t the only incoming player arriving over the summer who will a chance for playing time this season. Saban just happened to make his point when talking about running backs Najee Harris and Brian Robinson Jr.  "So, nobody’s going to be entitled to anything when it comes to next fall. I know that guys, all you care about is the depth chart. We don’t have a depth chart. Everybody’s going to compete, and hopefully, we’ll be able to get those guys to be able to play winning football at running back past the first two guys, as well.” ......

He's got a real influx of talent coming in from his rich recruiting class. We will likely see several true freshman with a lot of playing time.

Rumor was that Jedrick Wills had an achilles injury, but an MRI confirmed that Alabama right tackle Jedrick Wills’ injury wasn’t anything major.

Have heard he has a high ankle sprain, and is expected to miss this final week of spring ball but that he should be back to normal in the next couple weeks...

That's good news. I was afraid it might be worse. We need him.

I sure hope our ILBs step it up. We can't afford a drop-off at that position.

Tuesday April 9th:

https://collegesportsmaven.io/alabama/bamacentral/practice-report-alabama-gears-up-for-a-day-EMVH2SiNvkuOweMaQqc8Sg/

Right tackle Jedrick Wills Jr., who has been sidelined by an ankle sprain suffered during last Saturday's scrimmage, was seen walking around the weight room while his teammates were on the practice fields.

Matt Womack, who has been lining up at right guard, appeared to be working at right tackle during individual drills, but reporters didn't get a chance to see anything team-related involving the line as a whole.

...

For the first time this spring Ben Davis  :o (shin splints) was on the field for drills, but along with Terrell Lewis (knee) wearing a black no-contact jersey.

Sophomore Eyabi Anoma was paired with senior Anfernee Jennings, while Chris Allen, Jarez Parks and Kevin Harris were behind them.

....
