Title: Baseball Thread
Post by: pmull on March 03, 2019, 08:19:30 AM
Alabama went on the road for the first time this season and took all three games from South Alabama in Mobile. Bama won 7-3, 10-5 and 6-1. Alabama is 10-2 on the young season riding a 6 game win streak. South Alabama was expected to win the series according to the Mobile media. USA is 4-5 on the season. Three of the losses were to Bama. The other two came against #14 Clemson on the road were USA lost the series 2-1.

Alabama continues the non-conference pre-SEC part of the season this week taking on UAB on Tuesday, South Dakota State on Wednesday and a weekend three game series with Northern Kentucky. All games are at home this week. We host Middle Tennessee Tuesday the 12th before opening SEC play on the road at Ole Miss.

We have not played the most difficult schedule up to this point but we have played well. We need to continue to pick up these non-conference wins because the SEC will be brutal as normal.

Bama sweeps the weekend series with Northern Kentucky. The record improves to 15-2. SEC plays starts next weekend when we travel to Ole Miss. The preconference part of the season has been encouraging.

Indeed it has. I hope this confidence extends over to SEC play.

I hope it doesn't transform into OVER-confidence... That can be just as deadly...

Honestly, if we go .500 in SEC play with the roster that we have, it will be a very successful season.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. With the brutal SEC schedule we have, I would count that as a success.

Going .500 in the SEC would be a very good year. This week the SEC has 11 teams ranked in the Top 25 including 5 in the Top 10.

Bama baseball moves to 16-2 with a 2-0 win over MTSU last night. Good, solid pitching performance by 5 Bama pitchers.

Serious question:  Why do they need to use 5 pitchers in a game that is only 9 innings long?

Getting them all ready for SEC play, and not burning them out with a lot of innings.

Bama drops Game One at #8 Ole Miss 1-0 in a pitchers dual. There were only 10 hits in the game. Both teams left 7 runners on base.

The lost snaps to 12 game win streak. Our record falls to 16-3 (0-1). We play again at 1:30 today.

I'll be there again today.  Hopefully today's sunshine and less wind make it warmer.  I nearly froze last night.

Here's a pic from last night's game.  Official attendance was 8500, but I doubt it was really half that.

It was not a pretty game.  Each team had 2 errors and there were many walks.  Both teams used numerous pitchers; Ole Miss even used Olenek (center fielder).  It was tied 6-6 until Bama scored two late.  Good win.

Both teams need to develop pitching to have any chance for post season.

Bama missed several scoring opportunities. We had bases loaded and no outs twice and did not score. The should not have been close. Bama was walked 9 times and 2 HBP to go along with our 13 hits. Ole Miss only had 6 hits but walked 7 times and 3 HBP.

Game Three tomorrow at 1:30. Winner takes the series.

Bama lost 12-2 today.  Tough day, Bama lost at least 2 balls in the sun on short fly balls to center that I think accounted for 5 runs.  Also, in the big inning for OM, batter got away with a check swing that wasn't called a strike for the strike out then got a hit to score a run.  Bama hitters only had 5 hits.

The pitching wasn't as bad as it looked.  Two of the hits were the lost balls in the sun and a couple of seeing eye singles really hurt.

8 walks given up today, 7 yesterday. We have to get better than that. That will get you beat. However, we did what we had to do and that was get one win on the road from the #8 team.

We return home to host Maine on Tuesday and Arkansas in a Fri-Sat-Sun Series.

Alabama lost Game One to Arkansas last night 12-3. Bad night for Bama. The Hogs got a run in the 1st and 6 runs in the 2nd. It was over after that. Arkansas is strong again this year. They have strong pitching and swing the bats as well as anyone in the country.
