Title: Alabama vs Tennessee in Basketball Now ESPN2
Post by: Marshal Dillon on January 19, 2019, 01:14:27 PM
UT #3 in nation. 8-2 UT timeout. Vols look quick, fast, well-motivated. Tide looks overwhelmed right now. May see adjustments after timeout.

Tide 1/7 shooting. Hall playing good but everyone else looks lost.

Tide turnovers rearing its head again. UT very tough on D. UT scoring at will. They can easily score 80-100 points on a team. 13-4 UT.

Tide ball handling embarrassing right now. We should have at least 6 more points right now. 15-4 UT.

We step out of bounds on a breakaway, have had 3 unforced turnovers, at least 3 missed layups, & shoddy passing. We have picked up the tempo and See more energy. 18-10 UT.

We are missing lay-ups! Crap! UT 26-17. Amazing we are still in this game with all the screw-ups.

I think Bama has hit their last 5 shots, problem is they aren't stopping UT.

Petty hits back to back 3's, then UT hits 3, Petty scores 2 and is fouled. Timeout. 35-26 UT. Tide 11/26 FG's 42%, UT 15/26 57%. Tide 15 rebounds, UT 13.

Bama may lead the nation in unforced turnovers

Missed lay-ups and bad passing are killing us. UT 42-29.

44-32 UT Half

Tide 39% FG, UT 60%

Bama take the lead on a  13-0 run to start the 2nd half, led by Petty.

Petty & Hall are carrying us. 51-49 UT. Tons of energy by Tide in 2nd half, Tide 7/10 FG's in half, UT 3/12. Tide 0/4 in FT's 2nd half. If we play a complete game, we Ould be awesome. 53-49 UT, another Tide turnover.

Against my better judgement, I just turned the game on to see how we are doing.  I just can't help myself.  :lol2:

From what little I have seen, Petty is just going off on them right now.

O-M-G we miss 2 shots from a foot away.

55-55 tied. Petty on fire with 26 points, mostly 3's. I bet he has 16 points in the half, so far. 9/17 on 3's for game. Tide 56-55. Petty scored last 7 points. Tide 5/11 FT shooting.

Petty 5/5 in 3's in half, then Hall slams one home. 61-58 Tide. Petty has 30.

Petty is playing his butt off.

Petty is playing his butt off.

And it is a road game.  Last year he couldn't hit a 3 on the road to save his life.  A year of experience makes a difference in confidence level.

Two more missed FT's by Tide. 5/13 in game. This could come back and bite us hard. 63-60 Tide. We have thrown up 3 ugly bricks in a row, now 4 ugly shots.

Shot selection is garbage right now.  Fortunately UT is just as bad.

Missed front end of 1 & 1, Tide now 5/14 FT's. Still 63-60.

63-63. UT was ice cold for 7 minutes. Hope we didn't miss a golden opportunity to put UT away. ANOTHER turnover. 65-65 timeout. If we lose this game it's very simple, FT shooting and turnovers.

 :dunno:

1-9 in FT's in 2nd half. No excuses.

UT should just foul us on every possession. Ingram misses FT, makes 2nd. 67-66 UT.

Fittingly, we lose on a turnover/bad ball handling. Bottom line, we should have won, but we can't shoot a free throw. Shot 8/18 FT's. 71-68 UT FINAL

Questionable call, however, 13 turnovers and 44% free throw shooting, 8-18 lost the game.

I didn't get to see it as usual but shouldn't some of the REC folks get in that coaches ear and mention practicing FT's till midnight? RTR!

If we'd shot our season average from the charity stripe, we would have beaten a legitimate top-5 team on the road.  This is probably the most encouraging game I've seen out of this team other than maybe Kentucky.  Actually, I find it more encouraging than that win we almost blew at home.

Yeah, but we found a way to lose.  Missing free throws sucks.  Ricky harps on that enough for us all, so I won't discuss it.  But we had the ball with the last shot, but got a walking call.  Just idiotic.  We need to learn to win these close games.

 :(

I'm not accepting moral victories.  This team repeatedly has blown opportunities to win games this season.  There are several games that should have been won but were lost instead.  Until they learn to finish games, I'm not giving them credit.

Losing always stinks, but a couple more thoughts:

We only had the opportunity for the last shot because Donta hit two clutch FTs and was savvy enough to draw a charge out at the free throw line.  The walk on Petty, while possibly legit, would not have been called 10% of the time.  Actually, I don't think it would have been called had the top-5 home team not just been called for a foul in the final 15 seconds.  I think the ref was at a "heightened" state looking to blow his whistle.

There were a lot more positives in that game than in most of our wins this season, that's all I'm saying.  I'm more concerned about us not being able to put away teams that we're supposed to beat (and sometimes blowing them all together) than I am about us losing to Tennessee on the road.

Certainly seemed that way, huh?
