Title: Urban Meyer Retiring from Coaching
Post by: bamaphil on December 04, 2018, 08:41:02 AM
I told a co-worker Saturday that if OSU didn’t make the playoff Meyer would announce his retirement by Monday. One day late.

Toxicity has followed Meyer everywhere he’s been. Seeing the trail of destruction that follows him makes me all the more appreciative of Saban’s scandal-free time at Bama.

This has obviously been planned and coordinated for some time.  He didn't decide to retire, and the university make a decision on who their new head coach will be overnight.

I agree, and the University’s decision to let him coach this year leaves no one looking good. My gut says they told him at the beginning the year they’d suspend him then let him finish the season, but he’d be gone by the end of the year. They wanted a championship so badly they let an abuse enabler coach one more season rather than risk a wasted season.

It is a top job and I’m sure they’ll get high level coach, but OSU is a cesspool of corruption.

Although he is a good coach, I feel he fights many demons and illness to be even more successful. Best of luck to him.

Well said.  The trail of destruction has been obscured by a winning record, and that much of the destruction didn't come to light at UF until aftr he'd left.  At tOSU it caught up with him.

Still, I think a lot of this decision is due to legit health concerns.

Per reports, the OSU President wanted to fire him after the wife abuse fiasco but the Trustees overruled him. I think this was part of a deal by everyone. Meyer knew his time was up and he wanted out.

I'm guessing that the university has known the replacement for some time.  Ryan Day did a much better job that Urban during the first 3 games of the season -- that's when OSU looked at their best.

If they had fired Urban and let Day run the show the rest of the season, they'd probably be in the playoffs.

2 I see what you said here. Do you really this Coach Day would be that much better of a leader than Meyer? RTR!

They were playing very well under Day. When Urban came back, not so much.

Day won't have the recruiting mojo.  At least not this year.

Yeah, will be a transition year to let the dust settle. But he strikes me as someone who will recruit well.

I'd think it'd take years to get back to Urban's level.
Urban spent all summer traveling and visiting (and he had name recognition).

Hmm.... Seems I remember Kirby coming out of the recruiting gate pretty well.

Ohio isn't Georgia.
Kirby had an open door to the golden goose.

No Chech, Ohio isn’t Georgia. They recruit and get most of the better recruits in the north from all over, because of who they are. Kirby wasn’t a household name outside of Alabama and Georgia. A lot of similarities between Kirby and Day.

We'll reap the recruiting benefits of sub-Urban retiring, starting very soon.  I'm feeling it.

Georgia is a huge fertile recruiting area along with Florida. Ohio State is okay, but it ain't Georgia. The ice, snow, and lack of family in Ohio limits raiding Southeastern states & Texas.

Nice story.  Day is supposed to be a great recruiter.
