That is the most disfunctional athletic department I have ever heard of.

This makes no business sense for Gus unless there is some job security aspect included that hasn't come out yet.  Without that, if Gus' agent signed off on this deal, Gus should get a new agent.

Related....memories of Jetgate from Tubs...

Whether it’s true or not, the level of dysfunction with their program is very high and I’m enjoying every minute of it.

What a gift this gives all other SEC teams during recruiting season.  NO PLAYER IN HIS RIGHT MIND would choose Boogerland in this climate.

On a related note, they can't fire Gus because NO COACH IN HIS RIGHT MIND would take the job in this climate.  :lol2:

I had the opposite reaction as most of you.  I think it's a fairly creative and productive move by the athletic department.  I'm not sure they could've come out of the deal any better.  They couldn't afford the 75% contract value buyout to replace him (and probably got turned down by a couple of their original candidates), so if they have to keep him, at least gain some leverage.  If he doesn't win 10 or 11 games next year - he's gone - and now at a cheaper price.

They cannot afford to buy him out and probably cannot find a high caliber replacement . They are telling the fan base they are phoning in the season next year and will get a new coach at that time. Why would Malzahn and his high powered agent, Jimmy Sexton, accept this one sided offer. One day I will learn to try and not figure out the backward thinking that comes out of Auburn because it rarely makes sense.

Sure, it is good for Auburn, but NO COACH IN HIS RIGHT MIND would agree to it.  What does Gus get out of this?  The privilege of being the Auburn coach for one more year?  :eyeroll: :lol2:

I'm sure he thinks that it will somehow work out better for him long term.  He's probably delusional enough to think he can at least raise his stock with a good year next year.  If he were fired right now, I'm not sure that he'd ever get another Power 5 head coaching job.  I'd much rather have Les Miles as a head coach, and he had to take about the worst Power 5 job in the country to get back in.

The restructured buyout is likely not extremely significant.  Maybe 10-15% off the 75% it is currently.  If he gets canned now (for the sake of argument even if not exact), his buyout is 75% of $42M = $31.5M.  If they lowered it to 60%, he'll collect his $7M next year, and still be guaranteed 35M * 0.6 = $21M, "only" costing him $3.5M and perhaps increasing his potential for future employment.  At the same time, Auburn would save about $10.5M for putting up with him for another year, assuming they'd have to pay the replacement at least what Gus is making.

I know Malzahn is an idiot, but even an idiot wouldn't agree to a $3.5 loss to agree to keep working for the same program.

Malzahn has an agent, who clearly isn't an idiot.  So this ain't happening.

Meanwhile, the Aubs will lose recruits and the assistant coaches will bail.

Well I'm not going to do the math but...If they keep Gus for two more years then his buyout would reduce significantly I believe so at that time they might just go ahead and show him the door.  They might be willing to suffer through two more years of >mediocrity to put themselves in a better position to hire a top-tier coach...  :dunno:

I think it is a great deal for the university, I just can't see the logic from CGM's side.

There's probably more to the deal than has been released to the press.

And the deal ain't done yet.

No, there's prolly less.

Having worked at several universities, you can bet that Aub released this "plan" to appease the fans and alumni, suggesting that the all-powerful university was making adjustments and planning for the future.  In truth, a committee of people (lawyers, maybe the AD, and the Aub President) sat down to design this press release.

Think about the surge of unhappy fans following the last 2 games.  This way Aub can answer their fans' criticism with "we're making progress for a better future", even though nothing is happening.

I agree with Chech on this one. Gus is probably naive enough to take this plan but his agent, Jimmy Sexton, certainly is not. Sexton is also CNS’s agent so you know he's the best in the business and wouldn't let his client do something this dumb.

Full of sound and fury signifying nothing.

No dice, I'm with you. Even if what Chech said is true that this is all baloney, this cannot help the Gus' efforts in the offseason. And you know good and well CNS, CKS, and all the other programs in the conference are going to sell that to youngsters.

This is exactly what is going on. Gus thinks 2019 is "their year" and he will then be kept after they win the SEC and maybe more. I believe Gus got bluffed by Auburn and he was afraid he would be fired after the bowl game since there were rumors Auburn would find the money to make the payout.

It's funny how Auburn viewed Malzahn as being the goat last year (greatest of all time) after beating Georgia and Bama. And now he's back to humping goats.

I'm not convinced that he ever stopped humping goats... He just had the wins last year to distract everyone from it...
