Title: COACHING-CAROUSEL NEWS
Post by: Chechem on November 27, 2018, 05:38:20 AM
We all know about Les Miles to Kansas and Mack Brown to North Carolina.

But have you heard about Jim McElwain being on Jeremy Pruitt's short list for the Vols OC position?

Hadn't heard that.  McElwain is coaching WRs at Michigan this year.

There are some rumors that Colorado might be interested in him as a H.C.

Either way, McElwain was bought out by Florida and is doing fine.

I'd heard Pruitt would like to hire Freeze if his sentenced has been served with the SEC Office.

Purdue sucks as a football job.
Louisville isn't a favorite city of mine, and the campus suffers from little-brother syndrome, but at least they're in the ACC.  Lots of potential there for an upcoming coach.

I saw a post on an Auburn message board last night where a barner said the Georgia Tech job would be perfect for Malzahn. He could run the wildcat, sugar huddle, jet sweep, point at the ground, chew gum, pick his nose and run up the middle all he wants.  :lol3:

Purdue sucks as a football job.

Perhaps not the highest profile of college football jobs, but they gave him a pay bump to over $5M a year to stay.  Seriously - $5M a year to coach Purdue?

That's Big10 money!  (Second only to the SEC.)

He's worked a minor miracle at Purdue, and they don't want to lose him and go back to being, well, Purdue again.  Plus there's added incentive required to live in West Lafayette, Indiana.

As for Louisville, sanctions against the basketball team for the sex scandal, plus the firing of Pitino for the pay for play scandal, has made that school toxic at this time.

It would not shock me if Matt Canada got the full time gig at Maryland. He had a real steadying influence on that team, very nearly pulled the upset on tOSU, and was close to a bowl bid. Plus, UM is not going to attract a high-profile candidate, and he seems to have the support of the team.

He has done very good by Purdue standards. He is liked and respected in coaching circles. If he stays at Purdue another year a better job than Louisville will be available. He is saying the right things but he got cold feet about going into a Louisville athletic program that is trending in the wrong direction in several sports.

Have to root for Purdue, home to quarterbacks:

Len Dawson
Bob Griese
Gary Danielson
Drew Brees
Jim Everett

Amazing story today is that LIBERTY UNIVERSITY is courting Freeze too.

Liberty University is a private, non-profit Christian research university in Lynchburg, Virginia.  Liberty is one of the largest Christian universities in the world and the largest private non-profit university in the United States.

Studies at the school have a Christian orientation, with three required Bible-studies classes in the first year for undergraduate students. I haven't heard anything in particular yet, but at least one of the talking heads on Baltimore sports radio said the Maryland job is Mike Locksley's if he wants it. Problem is, he and the current AD do not have a particularly cordial relationship. Pep Hamilton at Michigan (another Michigan guy? Didn't they learn with DJ Durkin?) and interim coach Matt Canada are the other two candidates.

However, that was quickly refuted by Bruce Feldman of Fox, who said his sources claimed the report was "not even close to accurate."

The Jones to Maryland is being reported as a done deal.  Enos to OC is being reported as a done deal.  The question about a QB coach is mine.  There was a lot of talk this season about what a great job Enos has done with the QBs and the impact of having a dedicated QB coach had on the offense.  Splitting focus between OC and QB coach duties has been cited as a "problem" in previous seasons.

I agree with ricky.  Enos can be OC and still coach QBs.  I don't recall "splitting focus... cited as a problem."  Kiffin was able to coach QBs and offense.  The "problem" was not having an OC or other coach good at developing QBs.

With Grier being gone, I think the QB tank is empty at WV, and it's time for him to move on. Like you said, more money and a more fertile recruiting ground, not to mention, the weather is warmer in Houston.

Holgerson was pretty average at WV and I think his time was up there. For some reason, WV thinks they should be competing for National Championships. In 8 years, he won 10 games twice, with an overall record of 61-41 in 8 years & 38-32 in the Big 12. Like I said, very average.

That is average from a coach who use to carry Houston on very high scoring games. RTR!

Neal Brown from Troy appears to be the next HC at West Virginia. Hate it for Troy but a great move for him.

He did a pretty good job here. Hate to see him leave. As we’ve seen in the past, good OL coaches are hard to come by. Seems like just one more distraction for the team.

I have to believe if CNS didn't think he could replace him with better he would offer more money and keep him. RTR!

Here's why Coach Key is living:

Quote
Key has spent the last three seasons at Alabama coaching the offensive line, but he was also a four-year starter at right guard for the Yellow Jackets from 1997-2000, playing for Coach George O'Leary, who Key coached under at UCF. He was there with Collins for two seasons (2008-09).

Kliff Kingsbury now head coach for the Arizona Cardinals -- yes, the NFL team.

Because he did so well at Texas Tech that they fired him?   ???

Quote
The Arizona Cardinals made a splashy hire Tuesday by grabbing former Texas Tech head coach and recently hired USC offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury—a name that had become the hottest in coaching circles this hiring season.

Kingsbury was fired by Texas Tech in November after six seasons, in which he had a record of 35-40, but he quickly was hired by USC. Then, before he'd even called a play for the Trojans, he became one of the most-sought-after interviews for NFL teams.

So why was Kingsbury so highly thought of in the first place? How could a coach who failed at Tech be considered ready for a head coaching job in the NFL?

Is there anything to back it up? He said he wasn't going to his alma mater. RTR!

Not hard to figure out why they were 3-13 this season.

Looks like 2 of those 3 wins came against the 49ers, who were almost as bad at 4-12.

Just saw this: Jim Chaney (UGA's OC) to the Viles.

So Kirby has lost both his coordinators.  Interesting...

Yeah, seems like a lateral (or worse) move.
Chaney has ties to UT, having been OC there before, but huh?   :dunno:

Bama is losing Coach Kool (Craig Kuligowski), Josh Gattis, and Brent Key.
Alex Mortensen worked with the receivers; he's gone.

What about Butch "The Cigar" Jones?
Is Enos the new OC?

Lots of shifting, lots of unknown, and lots of new faces.

And, now there's a rumor Georgia and Miami are looking at Enos as their OC.  :o I'm beginning to really dislike Kirby Smart.  >:(
