Title: The Wall-E Thread
Post by: Catch Prothro on September 20, 2018, 04:45:29 PM
Someone needs to step up and do Wall-E's job, but it won't be me.  (I'm the pickem guy.)

AL.com All-Access: Is this the week Alabama is finally challenged?

Quote
As dominant as Alabama has been this year, you can make the case (as some have done) that the Crimson Tide is actually underrated. Just going by point spreads, Alabama has far exceeded expectations each week this season.

The Crimson Tide was a 24-point favorite at kickoff time against Louisville, and won by 37 (51-14). It was a 37-point favorite vs. Arkansas State and won by 50 (57-7).

Alabama went off as a 23-point favorite against Ole Miss and won by 55 (62-7). That's a total of 57 points by which the Crimson Tide has "covered" this season, an average of 19 points -- nearly three touchdowns -- per game.

Penalties

You can't break the rules. Alabama is No. 107 (of 130 FBS teams) in terms of penalty yardage. It averages 72 yards a game after getting flagged nine times for 82 yards Saturday against Texas A&M. That included two illegal blocks on punt returns, a few holding calls ....

It was an issue a few weeks ago, but Joseph Bulovas has looked strong since taking over the job. He's 19-for-19 with extra points and 4-for-5 on field goals. That includes a 47-yarder against Texas A&M.

Yes sir, if we could get our punter to tune it up we would be in good shape. I would not want the guy from TA&M because he out kicks everything. I would like our punter better if he just ups the average to 40 to 45 yards and can place a ball inside of the 20. RTR!

Alabama shows Aggies it’s no Clemson

Quote
TUSCALOOSA — Alabama knew Texas A&M could take a punch. It proved it two weeks ago with its two-point loss to Clemson.

But the Aggies learned a valuable lesson Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium — Alabama can deliver one lethal knockout blow after another until full submission is rendered.

Three plays. That’s all it took to set the tone for the Crimson Tide against the No. 22 Aggies in the 45-23 conquest.

After linebacker Lyndell "Mack" Wilson made an athletic diving interception on Texas A&M’s second offensive play, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa connected on a touchdown toss to DeVonta Smith reminiscent of national championship clincher against Georgia.

Less than one minute into the contest, the Crimson Tide sent a clear message to the Aggies: Alabama is not Clemson, so don’t get your hopes up.

"Why isn’t Skyler punting very DeLong?"
https://www.rollbamaroll.com/2018/9/25/17899108/the-dynasty-is-over-alabama-football

Quote
I never expected DeLong to really have a cannon of a leg. He’s at his best when aiming his punts in a short field to pin the opponent deep. However, his lack of consistency and multiple shanks so far this season have been disappointing. It will be interesting to watch to see if he manages to right that in the coming years. He may never be the field-flipping weapon that we may have envisioned, but he might become that trick-up-the-sleeve player who can really mess up an opponent’s offense by pinning them on their own goal line with regularity, as long as Tua keeps moving the ball to around midfield.

You know Chechem, I would rather have a guy with a 40 yard average that can pin a team deep, than a guy with a 60 yard average and it lands in the endzone every time. What ya think? Even JK didn't average 50 or 60 but he could as you said pinpoint a punt for field to flip. RTR!

Through four games, Leatherwood has earned the lowest grade at run blocking among the Tide's starting offensive linemen, according to ProFootballFocus.com.

Alabama has particularly produced disappointing results running through the B and C gaps on the right side, with its ball carriers averaging three yards before contact -- almost a third of a yard less than it has netted through the same holes left of center.

This is not doomsday-level stuff, of course. But the state of the ground game has been called into question after Alabama managed to net 109 rushing yards on 28 carries in a 45-23 victory over Texas A&M last Saturday...

Happy now Coach Saban??   :dunno:

In 2016, Baker Mayfield led the nation with a quarterback rating of 196.4. It was the first time since Russell Wilson in 2011 that someone finished with a QB rating of 190 or better. That should help put this into perspective. Tagovailoa's QB rating through four games: 230.5. That's 14.7 points higher than anyone else in the country and 30.8 points higher than anyone in the SEC.

The ProFootballFocus article that Sabin (Rainer) references in his article:  https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/college-sec-offensive-line-rankings-through-four-weeks

I'm surprised we grade out as the second best OL in the SEC:

Quote
2. Alabama Crimson Tide

Left tackle Jonah Williams figures to be an early draft pick when he leaves school for the NFL, and after impressing as a freshman and sophomore, he has taken his game to another level in his junior year. Through four weeks in 2018, Williams is the highest-graded offensive tackle in the nation and has allowed just two hurries from 132 pass-blocking snaps. The unit overall lacks a weak link, and while right guard Alex Leatherwood is the lowest-graded player on the line at 64.5, that still sees him in the middle of the pack in the SEC, ranking at the 16th-graded graded guard out of the 25 to play at least 200 snaps. As a group, they have been key to Alabama’s running game, and it’s no surprise that through every gap where they have run at least three times, they average over five yards per carry.

Lordy, seeing Kentucky that high kind of really surprises me. What happens after one loss though, do they drop like a rock? I have to be honest, I am prejudice toward our players but I don't see our O-line rated that high at all. Our run game against TA&M really showed that against good teams we have a hard time running the ball. RTR!

I'm loving these blowouts.  Too many lean years to let a minute of this slip past.
Just seeing Tua play is GREAT.
But as soon as he's repacled by Jalen, the crowd shrinks to nada.

More from Saban Thursday night:

Quote
Saban on the redshirt rule: "This is a pretty definitive test of where a guy's heart is. We recruited guys to come to Alabama because they wanted to come to Alabama. We wanted them to come to Alabama. But we never know what's in their heart. But really they didn't commit to Alabama when they came here. They didn't commit to me. They committed to everybody in the organization and all their teammates. So when they sit in that team room and they decide they don't want to play, they're telling every guy that's on the team that, 'I'm not committed to you. I'm not committed to doing what you do. I'm not committed to what we're all supposed to be doing together. I'm putting my future and what I want to do ahead of what we're all committed to.' But, to me, I look at that like that's a definitive test. Maybe we shouldn't be playing that guy. Pretty definitive test, right, to find out about where a guy's heart is? So we found out about a few."

Quote
Saban: "We've had three or four guys that would be playing for us on defense right now who left the program in their freshman or sophomore year because they were disgruntled that they weren't playing. At that time, they weren't better than anybody. But right now, they would be better than the guys that are playing in their place. So what did they gain by leaving because they didn't play any quicker someplace else than what they would have played here?"

https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/index.ssf/2018/10/how_arkansas_did_alabama_a_fav.html#incart_river_index

Quote
At the outset of the game, Arkansas took advantage of Alabama defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi's no-holds-barred approach by throwing over the top of oncoming linebackers to targets running in the center of the field. These kinds of middle screens, such as the one distributed to Cantrell, combatted the Tide's blitzes.

"I thought they were very aggressive in the D-line in how they rushed, the stunts they would do," Arkansas coach Chad Morris said. "I thought maybe we could slow some things down by hitting our tight ends on some delays in the middle."  .......

Word out of Arkansas is the Razorbacks believe they have crafted at least part of the blueprint to beat Alabama's defense, and the internal feeling there is that programs with better personnel -- such as college football heavyweights Clemson and Ohio State -- could do even more damage against the Tide.
