Not good news.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced Saturday that sophomore outside linebacker Christopher Allen will likely miss the 2018-19 season with a knee injury. “Surgical knee injury,” Saban said. “He’s probably out for the season.”

Last season, Allen saw time in seven games during his freshman campaign. He totaled six tackles with one tackle for loss and added a pair of quarterback hurries and one forced fumble.

That makes two Crimson Tide linebackers set to miss extensive time because of knee injuries. Junior outside linebacker Terrell Lewis also tore his right ACL during an offseason workout.

“That’s unfortunate that we have two of those now at the same position, both guys that have made a contribution to our team,” Saban said. “We don’t have enough depth, especially on defense to be able to afford to lose those kind of players.

“... We basically have Anfernee Jennings and Christian Miller, who have been starters around here. Past that, we have Ben Davis and two freshmen. That’s basically what we have. If we had more inside linebackers, Joshua McMillon could play the position, but I’m not sure we could afford to move him. So, we’re very thin at those two positions right now.”

Saban also confirmed BamaOnLine’s report that offensive tackle Matt Womack suffered a foot injury during Thursday’s preseason practice. The coach provided more details on the injury.

“Matt Womack, obviously, had a foot fracture last year and it was totally healed,” Saban said. “He actually stepped on somebody’s foot and fractured his foot again. So, he’s going to be out for, I don't know, probably anywhere from 4-6 weeks.”

Allen, Womack and running back Najee Harris were not present during the one media viewing period of pre-scrimmage drills Saturday. Harris is dealing with a minor foot injury, Saban said earlier this week, but the sophomore’s setback is not believed to be long-term.

Defensive lineman Stephon Wynn (ligament strain) watched his teammates scrimmage in street clothes. Linebacker Jamey Mosley (shoulder) and safety Daniel Wright (shoulder) dressed out, and Wright was able to participate in the second scrimmage of the preseason.

“Daniel Wright scrimmaged today in a black jersey. But he scrimmaged, he got a lot of reps,” Saban said. “Jamey Mosley has been practicing some but no contact. His position is not really one that you can play without contact, so he didn’t scrimmage today but we feel like he’ll be back on the field and able to do some things next week.”

Alabama will have Sunday off and return to the practice field Monday, Aug. 20, at 2:30 p.m.
