Title: Former Alabama basketball coach C.M. Newton dies
Post by: pmull on June 05, 2018, 12:45:39 PM
I am a college basketball fan today because of CM Newton. His Alabama teams in the 70's got me interested in the sport and I have been a fan ever since. He had some great teams. It was a different time with different rules. Only one team per conference made the NCAA Tournament. Kentucky was the team to beat with Rupp still being the coach. Alabama was the only SEC team to challenge UK. Newton's teams won three straight conference championships. He had very good players like Wendell Hudson, Leon Douglas, TR Dunn and Eddie Murray to name a few. That was the glory days of Alabama basketball. Wimp Sanderson was an assistant on his staff. He was also a true southern gentleman. RIP Coach Newton you will be missed.

I started at Alabama in 1969.  CM's team only won one SEC game the previous year.  But he turned that around and brought excitement to Alabama.  It was during the Bryant years, so before CM there weren't many basketball fans.

My favorite game of those years was when Bama beat LSU (and Pistol Pete) 106-104 in OT.  Maravich scored 69 points.  Great game.

 #+ #+

May he rest in peace.

"Pistol" Pete Maravich was my hero of Basketball and I tried to learn to try and dribble like him and shoot like him. RTR!

I'm just now seeing this.  Apparently I've been under a rock for a few days.

Very sad news.  He's truly beloved by many.
