What a year, huh?

I would think this is probably Saban's most satisfying year as a football coach. Never have I seen as much adversity on any team, much less one that just won a National Championship. Including last night, if my count is right, Bama had 24 injuries during the season. That is unprecedented. The first half last night, was a microcosm of the entire season. We were outplayed on offense, we were outplayed on defense and we were outplayed on special teams. In addition to that, we had players jumping teammates, coaches melting down, and the majority of a fan base thinking it was over.

But Saban and this team persevered through all this adversity. Tua came on and completed one of the most epic comebacks in college football history. And he didn't do it alone. 6 freshman played out of their minds, stepping in with near flawless execution, to keep us in the game. The defense was revived and took control when they had to, to give Tua and the offense the opportunity to win the game. I'm just glad the team redeemed Pappy so he didn't have to be compared to Greg Gantt for the rest of his life.

When Saban came off the field saying it was the happiest moment of his life, you could see it in his face, that he was telling the truth.

Some things did concern me though. I will never understand why Mekhi Brown was not kicked off the team, much less being allowed to see the field again. That was a bad look for us.

We played dirty at times. I know they want to be known as a nasty defense, but there was no excuse in Mack Wilson shoving Fromm's head after a tackle for example, or Crazy Tony Brown being Crazy Tony Brown. We need to show more class than that.

And let's face it, the refs were very generous to us. Maybe karma from last years bad no calls that gave Clemson the title. But the truth is, it's part of the game, but we were very fortunate there.

But, I can't help but being very proud of this team. This may be my most satisfying Natty of the modern era, considering the monumental obstacles this team faced and overcame.

Tua made some freshman mistakes, but none of them phased him. He is a very confident (not arrogant) player and he came through in spades. Can't wait to watch him next year. He is an instant legend at Alabama and the game is an instant classic.

Anyway, here's to #17 and with the cast we have coming back next year, most likely with Tua at the helm, I very much like our chances to repeat.

And he was obviously happy.

But one moment I saw after the game made me think that maybe he wasn't being 100% honest.  That was when the reporter pointed out he had matched Bear Bryant's record of six national championships, and asked how that made him feel.  It looked to me that Saban was choked up, overwhelmed by the magnitude of that, as the emotion of the realization hit him. 

As competitive as he is, you know Saban has to sometimes think of the bigger picture, and the legacy he will leave.  But instead, he said it was all about the players, the fans, and he doesn't think about the rest of it.

Maybe Saban views these comparisons as "rat poison," an invitation to rest on his laurels, be satisfied with the job he has done.  He knows that when complacency sets in, that drive needed to perform, to continue improving and adapting, could suffer in that complacency.  Those thoughts are for days in the distant future, when Saban is watching geese poop on his lawn. So Saban refused the rat poison.  His job isn't finished.

Nevertheless, I'll take the time to appreciate the job Saban has done, the record he has tied, the glorious season we mere mortals had to privilege to witness.  And what a season it was.  Losing to the Barn couldn't even diminish it -- indeed watching Auburn lose to Georgia in the SECCG, and then lose to Central Florida in the Peach Bowl, while their two worst enemies were playing each other for the National Championship, only seemed to make it that much sweeter. 

So here's a toast to Coach Saban, and to all here on CRS that I've had the privilege to share it with.

The coaching job? It was the best ever use of the talent available of any coach in college football history. There was Freshmen played that had great talent and we would never have known if not for the injuries which I am not being OK with but I was glad to CNS make calls that worked perfect in the situation. RTR!

This season was exciting for sure.  Not sure why but the loss to the goat humpers from far west Georgia (I refuse to admit that they are part of the fine state of Alabama) just didn't seem to bother me much at all. IMO, the only good thing about the season coming to an end is that softball season is just around the corner...

This game will certainly go down into the annals of Alabama and college football history.

I’m going to make a couple of predictions about Tua and his future here at the University.
1) If Tua stays healthy, he will be the first QB at the University of Alabama to win the Heisman Trophy.
2) Tua will become the most proficient QB in the history of the the program.

I know these are big statements, but this young man is something very special in so many ways. I cannot wait for next season.

Taulia is a Bama fan, and would be a 2019 recruit.  He's been offered by us, but hasn't made any commitment yet.

And I remember those ole days when the freshman team was worthy of watching.  Back in 1972 I watched Richard Todd run the option (for the freshman team), and whip everybody with his speed and long strides.  He never lost an SEC game in 1973-1975.

I think the freshman rule changed shortly after that season (1972 or 1973).   :dunno:

I wish we still had the freshmen teams playing. I know one thing if I am a recruit and want to play on a championship team I am coming to Alabama. I will say I am not worried about #18 cause it is so close you can smell the new. RTR!

Consider that Nick Saban's staff on Monday night included only 2 assistants who were there in 2015.  Tosh Lupoi and Burton Burns.  Every other position had turned over.

And just heard that the coaches are all getting big bonuses this year.

Speaking of CJP, I haven't heard any mention by fans, media or us on the forums, what a great job he did in the playoffs. He didn't have to stay, but he did, and for that, I will be eternally grateful to him. I never in a million years thought I would wish anybody good luck who was going to Tennessee, but..........nah! can't bring myself to do it.  :facepalm:

Several have said that this may have been CNS's best coaching job yet, and I am hard pressed to disagree. With so many injuries on defense, and the offense sputtering at times (particular in the Game That Shall Not Be Named), the coaching staff and the players really pulled together and did what they had to do to achieve the mountaintop again.

 #+ to CNS. I have never felt like since the days of old back to like 78 and 79 have I felt like every game is going to be a win for us. Back in those days we listened to the games just to see who would score or return punts or a kickoff for TD's. Now I have that feeling now since CNS has come we can walk on the field with anybody and win a game. It is kind of like you can see in the other teams eyes the glare of losing, with all the talk, they still know their chance of losing is a lot bigger than winning. To me this Alabama Football, the way Baseball and softball use to be. One thing is for sure though when your up this high on the pinnacle when you fall it is hard and it hurts. This is why we fight so hard. God Bless Alabama sports. RTR!
