Title: Tommy Nobis
Post by: bamalum67 on December 13, 2017, 05:48:59 PM
Tommy Nobis, Atlanta and Texas LB, has died.  Most will remember Tommy was a LB when we played Texas in the Orange Bowl and Joe hit the line 3 times and lacked 6 inches scoring..Tommy made the stop.

Later in the early summer of 66, I was working at an Esso Station just off downtown, and a big brand new Oldsmobile came in and the guy gave me a credit card.  I gassed up the car, etc. and when I went inside to swipe the card, I looked at the name...Tommy Nobis Atlanta Falcons. I said, good game, Tommy, to which he replied, yeah, I was sore for a week.

RIP, Tommy, "you wuz a good 'un"

He was a goodun, 67. Namath did score, however. Unfortunately there wasn't even instant replay back then, much less a play review.

That was back when we could go outside and throw ourselves the football and run catch it. RTR!

Yep, Joe DID score!!  The guard in on the play, Tank Mitchell, lived across the courtyard from my wife and I at Northington..and he told me he was lying across the goal line and Joe was on top of him, but when the dogpile was unscrambled, Joe was pushed back.refs said no score.  Helluva game..Joe was hurt, Sloan started, we were going nowhere, Joe came in 2nd half lit the fires and we almost pulled it out.

Joe signed with the Jets the night before..the rest is history.

Btw, we used to play pick up BB games at the Ed Dept gym on Sunday afternoons, Joe would come by and play sometimes, he was good enough to have made the BB team..

Those were my salad days!

OMG, thanks for the memories.  I also lived at Northington way back then.  I'd see Joe mostly at his restaurant; never played bball with him.

RIP Tommy.  Yep, a good 'un!   :(

I remember that OBowl game all too vividly.  There was a picture in the Miami Herald the next day showing Joe holding the ball across the goal line.  I'm as ticked off now as I was back then.  Just writing this post ticks me off anew!!!!

I have no idea what our apt # was, but remember it was cheap, had thin walls, and the divorce rate was high!   :lol2:

McBaman, I searched for that old photo of Namath scoring without luck.  I remember seeing it too.  It's somewhere on the web, but not easily found.  ROLL TIDE.

B 7 B Northington, 1968-69.  Good ole days.  I was working 3 jobs and my wife had 1.  We took a cut in pay when I graduated.
