Title: Championship Saturday Games
Post by: Catch Prothro on December 02, 2017, 08:52:18 AM
Championship Weekend started last night with USC beating Stanford by 3 points.  Stanford had their chance in the 4th Quarter, with 4th and goal inside the USC 1 yd line.  Stanford brought in their heavy package on third and goal, but USC held.  So Stanford opted to try again on 4th down.  I think it was a reasonable decision, Stanford had had success with their heavy package in short yardage situations against USC.  And a TD would have given Stanford the lead late in the game.  But on this play USC held, giving USC the ball inside their own 1 yd line.

This was the series that won the game for USC.  They completed a 54 yd pass across the middle, and went on to score a TD on a 99 yd drive.  Stanford lost by the 3 points they would have gotten had they opted for a FG.

The line for the Georgia/Auburn game has dropped.  Coming out of the gate at a mere 2 1/2 points in favor of Auburn, which seemed low considering how Auburn handled Georgia in their first meeting, Carrion's injury in the Iron Bowl, and his uncertain health for the SECCG, has caused bettors to put money on Georgia, resulting in a pretty much even line for the game.  I'm still not convinced that Georgia's mostly one-dimensional offense can make inroads against Auburn's defense, but a neutral site, with a chance at redemption for Georgia, and Carrion's injury has given Georgia a chance for redemption in this game.  Certainly those who vote with their money and not their mouth are leaning towards Georgia.

According to 538's statistical analysis, here are Bama's odds of making the playoffs:

TCU and Ohio State win:  Bama 64% chance to make playoffs

TCU and Wisconsin win:  Bama 61% to make playoffs

Oklahoma and Ohio State win:  Bama 47% chance to make playoffs

Oklahoma and Wisconsin win:  Bama 30% chance to make playoffs

(The other two conference championships, Georgia/Auburn and Clemson/Miami will put the winner into the playoffs and the loser out.)

And now it's 17-0. Kenny Hill doesn't look any better than he did at TAMU. Of course they've hardly had the ball, though.

TCU has a case of the suk.

Ohio State winning is the other possibility.  They're favored, but inconsistent.

TCU getting killed 38-17. Kenny Hill trying to do a zone read on 3rd and 6 when they just stopped him on 4th and a half yard, doing the same thing on their last drive.  >:(

Yep.  How is the play by Holyfield a penalty when the play that they ran against us last week that took out a player's knee was legal?  :dunno:

Officials make the call, according to who is calling the game.  UG took them out of the short passing game early and made it harder on AU.

Doesn't seem fair that Fresno State has to play a conference championship game on the Smurf Turf.  That must have been the price paid to get Boise State to join the Mountain West.

Definitely not worth the price of admission.  Painful to watch on TV.  And what an unfair advantage.

Fresno State is one of Bama's top 25 wins.  So even without the Boise hate, I'd be rooting for them.  Fresno beat Boise a week or two ago, but the blue turf is different.

I will be watching the Wisky-tOSU game due to the slim chance that Bama has to get in if OSU wins. I feel like I just brought the Dilly Dilly king a jar of Meade.

Yeah, definitely the 3rd out of 3 games to watch.  Fresno State is one of Bama's top 25 wins, so it would be good if they beat Boise (again).

I made the best Meade using orange blossom honey and champagne yeast.  This was nearly two decades ago (before children), but I've gathered the materials to make another batch, probably after Christmas.

We need them both to lose.  A typical, painful to watch Big10 game with boring, one-dimensional offense.  Maybe OSU wins 3-0 or 6-3.  So far, that is exactly what this game is.

Clemson TD to go up 7=0.

I think they said 9 years, but yeah, a long time.

Hard to watch tOSU game. I've decided not to pull for them. They are #8, playing for the B1G championship. We are #5, sitting at home. If tOSU wins, and I've been pulling for them, and they jump us anyway, which I think they will, I will be sick for days. I've already been involved in too many lose-lose situations this year.  :-\

Last year the Playoff Committee set the standard that they would pick the 4 most most deserving teams when they picked Ohio State over the BIG10 champ Penn State. It will be hard for them to say Conference champs should get in. It will also be hard to spin Ohio State is more deserving than Alabama. I think Central Florida and Southern Cal have as good a resume as Ohio State. If we do not get in it will be that they are protecting the BIG10 and do not want two teams from one conference (especially the SEC) to make it.
