Title: Bama Softball Kicks Off Another Season
Post by: Jamos on October 15, 2017, 08:31:35 PM
Bama kicked off their new season Friday night with a double header win over University of Mobile. It was a game of a small school being overmatched but it was good for both teams as Bama has 6 new players reporting this year and Mobile can use the experience of playing Bama to gain some good experience for their team. Mama won the first game 16-0 and the second 2-1.

Today they played an overmatched Wallace State team and won both of those games with ease as well. The intent of these fall games for the team isn't about a won loss record but is intended to give the incoming freshmen a chance to see some live action before the season starts next spring which is very important after losing 2 pitchers from last years team.

The two new pitchers are Courtney Gettins, a right-handed Juco transfer from New Zealand and Madison Preston, a left handed Freshman from Centralia, Missouri. Gettins is more of a Jackie Traina style pitcher with similar size but doesn't have the pitch speed that Traina had. Preston is tall and lanky and likes to spin the ball. Gettins will need some work on pitch location and hopefully can develop a good off speed pitch before next Spring. She has a decent rise ball but her pitch speed will require her to work on her pitch location as those SEC batters are tough. Preston impressed me the most as she really moves her pitches around with good spin on the ball and has decent speed on her pitches. She did use a change up at times but needs some work on that.

The other new players are all freshmen and there is some talent there. The most impressive to me was Maddie Morgan from Lynnwood, Washington. She played third base and was very impressive with her position mechanics and was one of the better hitters in the 4 games played. Kendall Sides is from Dora and seems to be a solid player as well in the field and has a good bat. Kaylee Tow is from Kentucky and should see plenty of early playing time, she too looked good at the plate.Kyra Lockhart is from Duluth, Ga and seemed a little intimidated until the last game today and her bat woke up. She needs some work overall and a little weight loss to help her foot speed.

Preston's pitching and Morgan's batting and fielding skills at 3rd base impressed me the most. Morgan plays a mean 3rd base, a position that has been weak for the past 2 years.

Osorio did not pitch and I'm not sure if she played International ball this summer but hopefully not as she had some injury issues at the end of last season and needed some healing time.
