Title: Bama Basketball loses 84-71
Post by: Jamos on August 09, 2017, 09:50:43 PM
It's good to have speed and energy in basketball but it can be your worst enemy when you go up against a team of seasoned veterans that prey on the other team's mistakes and that is exactly what happened to Bama tonight.

I'm excited for this team and I think what happened tonight can and will be a golden lesson learned by these young players on how to win at the college level. They have to learn how to play under control as a team, and I think CAJ will take care of that issue in the days ahead.

I mentioned after their last game that the team they beat wasn't that good, well the team that beat them tonight, Carleton, is that good as they could be the best team in Canada. They have beaten some good teams in the past, Wichita State being one of them. The stats pretty much sum up the loss but Bama had chances to pull out a win but couldn't quite do it at the end, poor shooting.

There was a big scare near the end of the game as Collin Sexton went down with an injury. He left the floor and came back to the bench before the game ended, hopefully nothing serious. Bama will play their final game Friday evening 5:30 cdt. It will be interesting to see how they react after this bad showing but these games are nothing but exhibition games intended to show and help this young team develop and tonight's bad showing just might be what this team needed more than a win. They played a good team and came up short, back to the drawing board.

Very confusing stats since we lost by 13 points.

Shooting %: Tide 25/66 38%, Ravens 31/69 45%
FT %: Tide 12/18 67%, Ravens 12/17 70.5%
3 pointers: Tide 9/24 37%, Ravens 12/29 41.3%
Rebounds: Tide 34, Ravens 44
Turnovers: Tide 15, Ravens 13

Basically, it boils down to the old reliables. Ravens had 10 more rebounds which enabled them to take 3 more shots and their 6 more made FG's did the job.

All summer I heard this team would be hard to beat. On the bright side you can learn more from a loss than a win. This will need our young guys from getting over confident. CAJ has some work to do.

This was one of the games that we, as a coaching staff, had circled on the schedule because this team has historically done really well against some of the most high-level American universities that have come over here to play," Alabama head coach Avery Johnson said. "We knew they were going to play physical, rebound the basketball and shoot threes, and they did all of those things. This is strictly an evaluation trip. We had the chance to play six or seven different lineups, play a lot of different guys and look at a lot of different match-ups. We didn't do as good of a job on both ends of the floor that we are capable of, but this was a great learning experience for our team."

Another worrisome trend from past seasons.

For the second straight game, the Tide got off to a slow start as Carleton jumped out to an 11-2 lead after the first two-plus minutes of play.

I like seeing us lose to a better class of team. The stats on 3's didn't look all bad and FT's but we have to hit these down the stretch to beat KY. and Fl. type teams. RTR!

Rebounding did us in. Tide had 10 fewer rebounds.

We had a 1 point lead late in the third period and CAJ sent in 5 new players. We played 6-8 different line ups. This trip is more about evaluating our team than winning games.

Exactly, but winning doesn't hurt either. Norris had 9 points in 19 minutes plus 4 fouls. He gets too many ricky-tack fouls. Ar'mond Davis was 0-6 & Johnson, Jr. was 1-6. I think Norris will be solid this year.
