Gary and Vern LOVED this play, and continued their discussion of it all through the first half.

BOTTOM LINE:  NOT A PENALTY

Cut block at the 5-yard line.  The A&M crowd was all over this.  "Should be penalty back to the 20."

BOTTOM LINE:  SHOULD HAVE BEEN A PENALTY

Trevor Knight long run (29 yards?) that set up their TD (can't find a video).

HOLDING ON JONATHAN ALLEN NOT CALLED.  In fact, I don't recall any holding penalties called during the game, despite numerous ones seen on both teams.  Allen was running laterally with the QB on Trevor Knight's long run, and was clearly held.  WTH?  The Aggies complained in their discussion threads about Alabama holding too.  Were there any holding penalties called on the linemen?

BOTTOM LINE:  SHOULD HAVE BEEN A PENALTY

There are always some bad calls both ways.  None of the calls/non-calls affected the outcome of this game.

The one thing that really makes Gerne and Vary so insufferable is how they get stuck on one thing and won't let it go. Honestly, I'm surprised the SEC hasn't put pressure on CBS to either shut them up or change before Verne's retirement. It's not good for the SEC to have the announcers of the marquee game each week constantly trying to drum up controversy and criticizing the officials. There's such a difference between ESPN's crews and CBS.  I don't know if it's intentional or not, but Gerne and Vary make themselves part of the story of every game they call.

I can tell you why they are the best thing for ELI. I always turn them off and watch the game when I can see it and turn Eli on and listen to him. RTR!

Early in the game, I thought G&V were going to drone on about that "missed FG."     :eyeroll:

Can't they just call the game, instead of creating a second, imaginary game that they comment upon?   :wall:

They've gotten very tedious to listen to, especially Gary. Reminds me of the friggen ACLU.  :lol2:

I'm not up on the current rules for blocking, so I'm not sure why this would be a penalty.

It isn't a block from behind (or the "clipping" penalty from days of old) because the Bama player is blocking ahead of the defender.

It also isn't a chop block which requires two blockers, one high and one low.

Is there now a penalty for blocking low beyond the line of scrimmage?   :stars:

seems like I remember something about from the knees down penalty
but not sure , really not sure if it would apply here

It's confusing, but seems to hinge on:
"4. Once the ball has left the tackle box a player may not block below the waist
toward his own end line.”

https://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2016PRMFB_NCAA_Football_Rules_Changes_Final_20160418.pdf

This source says it differently:
"Offensive players who are outside the tackle box at the snap, and those who leave the tackle box after the snap, may only block an opponent below the waist if the force of the initial contact is directly at the opponent's front."

An official was running down the sideline who was maybe 10 yds from Ridley's' block.  He couldn't have missed seeing it.  And he didn't throw a flag.

It is not that confusing. It is pretty simple. Well done Chechem thanks for this explanation. RTR!

IF I understand the rules correctly now, a player CAN BLOCK BELOW THE WAIST in such a situation, but only if it's directly in front of the blockee (it was) rather than from back or side, the blocker is facing away from his own line of scrimmage (Ridley was), and the blocker is from Alabama (  :lol2: ).

LEGAL BLOCK (I stand corrected).   :-[

In the first 2 series on three different plays,  #6 grabbed the facemask of the Bama rec,  grabs the Bama rec around the waist on a pass play, and throws a left hook to a rec who is blocking him.

I noticed that too.  I told my wife that he would get an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty soon.  Eventually he was the one that got ejected for targeting.  He acted like a real thug the whole time he was in the game.
