You guys may have seen on the Daily Thread that 2 and I are planning a beach-fishing outing for the week of May 16th in Pensacola (Ft. Pickens area).  
YOU'RE INVITED.

It'd be great if a bunch of CRS folks could join us for fishing.  We're thinking, "gather on Sunday May 15, and start fishing the morning of Monday May 16th."

There's a motel near 2's house that's inexpensive and convenient (Quality Inn & Suites Pensacola; 7601 Scenic Highway).  We could all stay there.  It's in Pensacola, not on the beach, but it's just a 20-25 minute drive to the fishing hole and affordable.

Anybody else interested?  We can chat about this on A-Day.  BRING YOUR LUCKY POLE (and your golf clubs!).

Well, that just might work.  My dad announced on Saturday the 19th that he would be getting married again (at 82 years old) on May 14th so if I can sneak away on Sunday the 15th and head down there for a couple of days... Just need to run this past Mrs. Nalt to get her take on it...

You know, that is the first saltwater fish I ever caught when I was a kid.

2 caught a puffer from the beach last week; a STRIPED BURRFISH to be exact.  He had hooked it and the big redfish at the same time, so we didn't take time to get a photo of it.

We'll be doing this again, fairly often, now that I'm retiring.  My last day at work is May 13th, so I'll be fishing regularly.  July 4th might be crazy on the beach, but a couple of days about that time will prolly work!

We're going to the beach, not in a boat (with limited space), so bring your wives, GF's, LF's, partners  :unsure: , whatever.  This is going to be a party.  The beach is beautiful, and perfect for a family outing.  Just beware, I'll be fishing from daylight until they stop biting.  We may need to coordinate car pooling from motel to beach to accommodate those who sleep in past 5AM.  :lol2:

I am sorely in need of a fishing trip. My dad passed in January, and fishing always makes me feel close to him. I may even haul my whaler down if anyone wants to linger and head out for some bay fishing.

Love the Gulf area, mainly Gulf Shores where we have stayed many times. Have to be in Atlanta a few days, then to Nashville attending birthdays of twin granddaughters, then a trip to Puerto Rico for several days. You guys enjoy life & the camaraderie. May is always hectic for us. We usually have things planned many months in advance. Like I said, have a great time.

As of right now I am planning on going with you guys but don't know for sure yet.  I did get Mrs. Nalt's blessings for the trip though.  However, my boss asked me on Thursday if I could travel for a couple of weeks in May.  If I do then I'll be leaving for work on or about May 17th or 18th...

Bump to keep this thread on the 1st page.  Also, just FYI...I got approval to come down for this fishing trip.  I plan on leaving the house early on Sunday and stop to go to church somewhere around Montgomery then head on down after that.  I have to be home Tuesday early evening though because my oldest daughter (that is still living at home) graduates from college that night...It's kind of a big deal...  Will be making my reservations tomorrow... 8)

Definitely hope you can make it over.  2Stater will chime in shortly and will hopefully be able to say for sure...

Langdon Beach (last pullout before Fort Pickens).  That's where we will likely be, at least Day 1 (Monday May 16th).  If it isn't good we might try another pullout in Ft Pickens reserve.  We've fished at Langdon several times this year.  Has tourists galore, but also has bathroom and shower facilities.

FISHBITES

You guys coming to Pensacola need to get some FISHBITES (shrimp or crab flavor).

Reports from the coast say these are the HOT BAIT.  I've just bought 2 packs (pink, shrimp).
They stay on the hook, and don't rot in the heat (like shrimp).
WalMart along the coast sells them, but I had to get them from Ebay.

I made 3 more beach spikes out of PVC this week, and I'm bringing an extra rod so I can fish 3 at once.  Also modified my beach cart so it can carry more stuff.

BTW, I can escape early Sunday morning to head south, so I can be there fishing before noon Sunday May 15th.  I'll either meet you guys at the beach or at Quality Inn.

Did you find any FishBites??  The guys on the beach forum are reporting that EVERYTHING from redfish to catfish is biting them now.  And they don't rot in an hour like shrimp!  And even 2 can't fling them off the hook!!  :lol2:

Those baits are like all fishing lures.  If they're "flesh colored" or white, they're advertised as "natural baits".  The colorful ones mimic "sand flea eggs" or "bleeding baitfish", or called "attractants".  Of course, we need them all ... and the fish don't give a rat's azz.  :lol2:

The Gulf-Breeze area fishing reports are still very good. Lots of pompano, redfish, and (recently) Ladyfish and Spanish Mackerel.  The waters are warming, so more Ladyfish (skipjack) are patrolling the shallows.  They're somewhat a pain, and not edible, but at least it's indicative of summer approaching.

... and the 10-day forecast is EXCELLENT: 84 degrees, light SE winds, and NO RAIN.  Hope that forecast holds!!

I'm really excited about going down there for this fishing trip but am really bummed out that you can't come. 

I purchased a new axle shaft and wheels/tires for my pier/beach cart today.  Now I just need to cut it down to size, drill the holes for the cotter pins and put it all together... I am putting larger tires on it since it will be used in the sand.  Those old small tires just tend to sink in sand so hopefully this will fix that...

My nerd beachcart is now ready for the CRS trip.
1. Added 4 PVC rods in front to hold 4 beach spikes;
2. Added a 'snout', made from a pool noodle, to hold lures and rigs.  Just wrap the pompano rigs around it and the hooks embed into it;
3. Added more 1.5" PVC to hold additional rods, mallet, and net;
4. Extension arms to hold the umbrella over the fisherman;
5. Glove is over the handle; ready to remove catfish and stingrays!

Whoa! Wait a minute there.  I'm not interested in racing pier/beach carts at all.  I'm just looking to whoop you guys by catching more fish than y'all do... The way I figure it I stand a pretty good chance of doing that too.  You "old" folks will likely sleep until around 9 or 10 then you'll have to get your coffee so you can wake up.  By the time you get to the water I may be limited out...  :P

Preacher, for that to happen, the fishing will need to get better. Chech caught a ladyfish, I caught a seagull (both catch and release), and in NALT's defense, he arrived late, but today's another day. Fixing to leave here shortly to go slay the fish.

Yeah it was a beautiful day at the beach. 2 was reprimanded by the beach hitch for entangling a gull (it was clearly the gull's fault), and I fought in a fine, powerful ladyfish (harumph). The web connection in my motel room is very slow, so I'm on my phone. Will add photos when I can.

I've got a fishing hat like Chech that I wish I had'a worn yesterday whilst pressure washing my driveway.  Oh well, got a good start on chroming my dome.

Even though we didn't catch anything, we had a great time. We started out yesterday surf fishing at the beach again, but as was the case the day before, the win was blowing out of the east, which is the worst possible scenario for surf fishing. Around noon, we picked up all our stuff and moved to the pass, where the bay empties into the gulf. We had a few hits , but reeled in nothing.

We decided, finally, to go to Peg Leg Pete's. We knew for sure that there was fish there. We  had a wonderful seafood lunch there. Pics forthcoming.

We capped everything off with a steak cookout at my house. I'm pretty sure a good time was had by all. I know I enjoyed it very much. Next time, maybe Chech won't bring that east wind with him and we'll be grilling fish, too.

FWIW, Chech went out again this morning and the conditions changed. He had some success. I'm sure he'll post about it later.

Well, I made it home alright.  The Durango has been "acting up" for several months now but I decided to drive it down there anyways.  The thing stalled on me about 10 or 12 times, just died!  Some of those times were on the interstate going 65-70 miles per hour.  Frustrating but not a major safety issue usually.

I had a GREAT time too.  2Stater, Chech and "Fred" were a lot of fun to hang out and fish with.  The only thing that would have made it any more fun would have been to actually catch some fish. Fred was a fellow that we met on the beach that just WOULD NOT go away except for when a certain female would come and run him off.  Not sure if he will be joining the forum or not but who knows? I think I took a pic of Fred and if so, I'll try and post that when I get a chance.  He was without a doubt a very friendly fellow though...

2State, thank you so much for the wonderful hospitality (and that of Mrs. 2) at your home last evening.  Also thanks for the lunch on Sunday.  Chech, thanks for the late lunch yesterday.  I owe you both...

Today was a different world.  For one thing, I went at daybreak.  For about half an hour fish were snapping.  The guy next to me had a big Redfish and a Pompano on 2 of his rods at one time.  He was running in circles.  About the same time I hooked, fought, and landed a big Redfish.  It was over 28", so it went back into the Gulf.  Several other bites didn't stay on the hook, including a Pompano that I lost right at the beach.  Later I caught a second Redfish.  I didn't have a photographer with me, so the pics aren't great.  But at least I got some.

They were fun to catch, for sure.  BTW, that wooden thing is my Belize-style gaff.  It's a big shark hook attached to an axe handle.  Good way to carry big fish around (by hooking them in the mouth) before releasing them.  And it works well as both a gaff and a club!  Never know who you'll meet on the beach!!

Well, nobody told me it would work on land. 

I got home safely this afternoon.  Thanks to Mrs 2 and 2 for the hospitality, and to NALT for making the trip.  The fish just didn't cooperate until Tuesday.  2 warned us that might happen; always "the day before" or "the day after" we're fishing.
