Title: Louisiana governor: "Budget crisis could mean no college football" updated

Quote
"You can say farewell to college football next fall," Edwards, a Democrat, said in a televised address.

"Student-athletes across the state would be ineligible to play next semester," Edwards said (via NOLA.com). "I don't say this to scare you. But I am going to be honest with you." ...

Political crap, but such tactics will certainly get the attention of the voters!

Looks like the drop in oil prices is pinching Louisiana again!

Wow!  Using "scare" tactics to drum up votes for one's position...I bet he gets re-elected next term too...  :eyeroll:

Sounds like political suicide.

Guess he's seen enough of Louisiana.  He'll be retired in Miami soon!

A cheap, stupid political lie that will backfire on this liberal Democrat governor. So typical and has been used for 50 years with the gloom & doom politics. Bet he backs off real quick.

CNS will use this to his advantage on the recruiting trail.  :lol2:

"You could go to LSU, but the governor might cancel the football program if they run out of money."  :lol2:

I wonder if the Governor knows what all the ingredients are in their Jambalaya. Those Cajuns take their LSU football very serious down there, just saying. ;)

I heard on the news today that he is trying to get the highest tax hike in the history of the state.  So he threatens them with no football if you don't give me all of your money.  Typical politician.  :eyeroll:

This is a quote from a poster on another board talking about this same topic... Interesting but hopefully this won't cause this thread to go political...

Quote
That the previous governor slashed taxes (on corporations, not individuals), cut higher education funding by nearly 40 percent and left the state nearly $1.8 billion in debt seems to be missing from this conversation.

Professors have been fired, degree  programs cut leaving some seniors with no avenue to complete them.  Public schools got raped, too. Teachers haven't had a raise in five years.
Hell, he even cut hospice funding for the poorest of the poor.

The state is reneging on promised scholarship payments for high performing students. These kids busted ass in high school to earn them because it was the only way many families can afford to send them to school, but that doesn't get your attention.

 Football finally does.

Yet another Republican governor follows Governor  Norquist's radical anti-tax ideas and leaves his state in financial hell.

Yes, please discuss the topic without pushing the thread into the President's Mansion.

I had rather talk about how those Cajuns will prepare and cook that dude in one of their many recipes. Their love for football/sports exceeds most sports programs at other schools, so I know who will win this battle. ;)

He knows that too.  That's why he played the 'football card'.
LF and I lived in Louisiana before moving to Oxford.  Budgets cuts were an annual event at universities.  The year we moved (1990) the governor (Edwards) threatened to close all of the regional universities.  That did it for us.

Finebaum seemed reluctant to discuss this yesterday on his show.  I don't think he realized that backwoods folks are very literal, and they'll remember this for a long time ("THE YEAR LSU FOOTBALL ALMOST ENDED").

Here is the Finebaum 'tape': http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=14769016

After a short intro (~ 2min), Finebaum plays the recording of the governor making his threatening statement, then Stephanie Grace (Baton Rouge newspaper) explains the situation in detail.  Pretty good summary of the crazy events.

Finebaum will build on this for a while!

I had forgotten that you and LF lived down there once. I worked down there once for about 5 months with Bell South and did I ever get an education in the life style of our Cajun friends. I was shell shocked when I first arrived but things got better as time passed and I'm glad that I had the experience, I made some good friendships. Thanks for the link.

When I worked down there we lived in a place called LaPlace and we rented from some really nice people. The lady and Dottie became good friends and at Thanksgiving they had never ate Chicken and Dressing. Dottie made a pan for them she made a pan of Seafood dressing for us and man it was so great. I never tasted food that was any better at all. RTR!

Update:

Universities in Louisiana are taking a 20% budget cuts.  But there's much more cutting to do.  Looks like lots of layoffs of staff and some programs, especially at regional schools.  Everyone is mum on the football issues mentioned by the governor.

Quote
Combined with reductions made by Gov. John Bel Edwards, the cuts—approved today by the joint House and Senate budget committee—have trimmed $60 million from departments.

But that’s only a fraction of what’s needed to close an estimated $850 million to $950 million budget gap before the financial year ends June 30...

They need to bring back the Stelly Plan they got rid of in '07-'08 and bring back a portion of the tax cuts from '05-'06.  Problem solved.

Lousyana was rolling in the bucks back then and had no foresight as to the bottom dropping out one day.  Got all that federal disaster aid.  smdh

I would pay it as long as the jambalaya and gumbo had no damned okra in it.
