Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp could be a head coach again -- and sooner than you think.


The former Florida head coach is "getting some consideration" for the South Carolina vacancy, according to Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports. Feldman cites an unidentified source.

I thought one thread to handle all the rumors &or actual hires would be easier for us to track this stuff. This one I find very hard to believe.

Things are getting weird. At about the same time Carloz Mendez of the Fort Worth Star Telegram reported that TCU co-Offensive Coordinator Doug Meacham was finalizing a deal to become the next head coach at North Texas, a UNT beat writer posted this update on the Mean Green coaching search. It notes that while Meacham was apparently the frontrunner to land the job, the tides have changed, and now,

"UNT is expected to have a new coach in place in the next few days, but it does not appear as if Meacham will be their selection."

I would be surprised, although I read where he would be vested for retirement if he stayed one more year. I don't know if that would be important enough for him to stay, though.

In the event Smart leaves to become a head coach, the best candidate available outside the South might be Durkin. The Wolverines defense has been one of the best in America this season, ranking 11th in Football Outsiders’ defensive efficiency rating. Durkin also has ties to the SEC, serving as Florida’s defensive coordinator as recently as 2014.

Most of the names on this list are quite famous, and it would require big bucks to secure them as the Crimson Tide’s next defensive coordinator. But Alabama won’t accept anything less. In eight years working with Saban’s defense, Smart has made himself one of the biggest names in his profession. If Smart truly is ready to cash in on that notoriety and become a head coach, it’s a sure bet that Saban knows only a big-name replacement will do.

Stricklin and Mullen agreed to a four-year deal last season. Mullen earned $4 million for the 2015 season. He’s set to receive a bump in pay as the salary of the four-year contract averages $4.275 million annually.

“I can understand why people would want to emulate the success we’ve had at Mississippi State,” Stricklin said. “Our job is to make sure we continue to make sure we put ourselves in the position to have the kind of success that other people look at and think they’d like to have for themselves.”

Will Muschamp leaving Auburn after one season for another shot at being a head coach?  OK, that happens.  Muschamp leaving The Plains after just one season for another coordinator job in the same conference or even in the same state?  Fire up the heat on Gus Malzahn‘s seat entering 2016.

At least that’s the opinion of al.com columnist Kevin Scarbinsky, who is reporting that, citing sources close to the AU program, the Tigers do not expect Muschamp to return for a second season as Malzahn’s defensive coordinator.  The former Florida head coach has been linked to the head-coaching vacancy at South Carolina, with the speculation growing that he may actually be the front-runner to become Steve Spurrier‘s permanent replacement.

Even more distressing, at least from Scarbinsky’s perspective, Muschamp may bolt to become the coordinator at Georgia or, even worse, hated rival Alabama, where he’d replace the new UGA head coach.  Regardless, Muschamp divorcing himself from the situation wouldn’t seem to bode well for Malzahn’s long-term future with the Tigers:

With a handful of openings across the country, the former Texas head coach has reportedly tossed his name into the mix for the vacancy at Virginia, not far from where he began his major college head-coaching career at another ACC school, North Carolina.

LSU did indeed enter contract negotiations with Jimbo Fisher before ultimately backtracking and announcing they were sticking with Les Miles as their head football coach. But money and support for Miles were the two biggest obstacles preventing the school from hiring Fisher, according to a report.

Missouri defensive coordinator Barry Odom has been named the program's new coach, the school announced Thursday night.

Odom, who agreed to a five-year contract, replaces Gary Pinkel, whose retirement became effective after the Tigers' season-ending loss to Arkansas on Nov. 27. Odom, a Missouri graduate, was Missouri's defensive coordinator last season after returning from Memphis.

Well, Missouri hired a big time coach.

It wasn’t the season that Will Muschamp had envisioned when he became the defensive coordinator for the Auburn Tigers, but as it turns out, it may have been just enough to get him another head coaching job.

Reports say that Muschamp has stepped down from the Tigers after just one single season:

I don't get it.  He failed as a head coach at Florida.  In one year at Auburn as DC the defense was awful in the first half of the season and showed moderate improvement in the latter half of the year.  His sideline antics against Bama were an embarrassment.  Now he's ready to be a head coach again?  Welcome to the bottom half of the East for the next decade, South Carolina.

A person with direct knowledge of the decision said Muschamp will take over the program and hopefully bring some stability to a program that saw longtime coach Steve Spurrier resign in midseason.

One of the stars of the movie "Meet the Mormons" will get his chance to meet a whole lot of Mormons on Monday.

Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo, who has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Bronco Mendenhall as BYU's head football coach, will visit BYU on Monday, the Capital Gazette newspaper of Annapolis, Md., reported Thursday night.

Niumatalolo's son, Va'a, is a sophomore linebacker at BYU.

An all-out blitz from Texas leaders apparently paid off. Tulsa offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert will be the new offensive coordinator for the Texas Longhorns. He will not be alone either, as offensive line coach Matt Mattox will be joining him to fill the same role at Texas.

Texas has also announced Shawn Watson and Joe Wickline will not return to the Longhorns program in 2016 as Strong continues to make staff changes in hopes of turning a corner before it is too late.

New Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is beginning to fill out his staff.

The program announced Saturday that it has hired Pitt offensive coordinator Jim Chaney for the same position. Chaney spent a year with the Panthers after working at Arkansas.

Interesting stuff at Texas.

"Strong continues to make staff changes in hopes of..."  not losing his job. 

It seems like Strong is still learning on the job.  It is like he is just now figuring out what kind of identity he wants for the Texas offense.

"I just knew," Perry said. "When I found out Kirby was leaving, I think — in my opinion — there's only one guy that can replace Kirby, and that's coach Pruitt. And I think that's the only guy that they could have gotten. Honestly, I wish he would have come back when I was there. I love Pruitt."

Florida State ranked third nationally in total defense under Pruitt. Georgia was 17th last year. It's eighth this season.

"He's a player's coach," former Alabama linebacker Nico Johnson said. "All the players love him, and he works his butt off and expects a lot out of his players. He knows the system. He knows what Saban wants, and he's a dang good football coach, I think. I think that's a great hire."  

With so many new head coaches throughout college football this season, the coaching carousel was bound to affect Arkansas at some point.

After Kirby Smart took the Georgia job recently, he inquired about hiring Arkansas offensive coordinator Dan Enos, but his no-compete clause prevented that from going very far. However, Smart apparently has decided now to hire former Arkansas offensive coordinator Jim Chaney, and unfortunately for the Razorbacks, Chaney's bringing his longtime colleague, Hogs' offensive line coach Sam Pittman, with him to Athens.

Hiring a full-time quarterback coach would be smart for the Vols, as junior quarterback Joshua Dobbs should play a pivotal role in determining how far Tennessee can go in 2016. While Dobbs certainly isn't a liability for the Vols, his completion percentage is hovering below 60 percent for the 2015 season and has been inconsistent at best with his deep ball accuracy.

In addition to supporting Dobbs, a quarterback coach could prove to be invaluable in the development of freshmen quarterbacks Quinten Dormady and Sheriron Jones, as well as incoming prospect Jarrett Guarantano - rated as one of the top high school signal callers in the nation.

All these assistants jumping around is something to see.

So it sounds like Kirby plans to bring a tough rushing attack to the Georgia offense.  Smart move (no pun intended), as Georgia seems to get a stable of great RBs but needs work on toughness in the trenches.  Georgia might very well be a formidable opponent in a few years. 

Georgia will be without its head coach and both coordinators for the TaxSlayer Bowl against Penn State.
The school parted ways with head coach Mark Richt (who is now at Miami) and defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt left the Bulldogs for Alabama. Now, according to UGASports.com and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will not be on the sidelines against the Nittany Lions on Jan. 2 in Jacksonville.

The Longhorns introduce new offensive coaches Sterlin Gilbert and Matt Mattox on Monday.
The duo comes from Tulsa, where they previously served as co-offensive coordinators. Gilbert will be Texas' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, while Mattox will be the run game coordinator and offensive line coach.

The situation at UGA has bedome a total zoo.
