Yep, everyone thinks #26 will be steady.  BUT, then who??

"I really haven't decided who we'll play in the game," Saban said. "It's who gives up the fewest plays and who can be responsible and do their job. I think that's the most important thing when you play that position."

Humphrey, junior Maurice Smith, freshman Minkah Fitzpatrick, sophomore Tony Brown, senior Bradley Sylve and redshirt sophomore Anthony Averett have all seen time at the No. 2 cornerback spot with the first-team defense during the spring and/or preseason.

I hear very little but I read a lot. The media is reporting that our secondary will be much improved this year. Hump appears to be taking control of the #2 spot. Brown was leading early but got hurt. I do not know if the injury set Brown back or if Hump has just stepped up his game. The day they signed I expected both of those guys to be starting corners at some point in their career.

Guessing I expect the secondary depth chart to look like this:

           1st                     2nd

CB      C Jones              M Fitzpatrick

CB      M Humphrey    T Brown

Star    M Smith            B Sylve  (Star)

FS      E Jackson            H Jones

SS      G Smith            R Harrison

I actually like the corners this year. Jones is solid and should be better this year. The others have another year in the system and have talent they just need some game experience.

I am a little concerned about the safety position. G Smith and E Jackson should do great in pass coverage but I question if they can be the run stopper especially Jackson. We have gotten use to 1st rounders back there with Barron and Collins.

I'm thinking the LB's and the D line will be the biggest factors in stopping the run and rushing the QB. I don't expect to see many safety blitzes this year. Having said that, Jackson has shown he can be a hard hitter. He may just surprise us with the opportunities he is given to stop the run.

I thought Tony Brown had been ahead of Humphrey, I wonder what happened? Plus, Eddie Jackson scares the crap out of me.

The way I heard it, was that Brown is good, but Hump is great. Eddie has looked very good in camp at safety.

I commented above in this thread that Brown was leading early but got hurt. I do not know if the injury set Brown back or if Hump just has improved his game and surpassed him. Regardless we have two good young corners in those guys.

I was referring back to last year when we heard how far ahead Brown was of Hump & that Hump could not grasp our defense. Did the new DB coach work miracles?

Hey MD I understood from what I read on AL.com that he was good. He might be what we need if he did this.  :worship: , RTR!

If I remember correctly, Brown enrolled early and was here for spring camp last year.  Humphrey did not come until fall camp.  So it makes sense that Brown was ahead last year.
