Title: Got hit by virus
Post by: ricky023 on April 20, 2015, 11:28:53 AM
Last Friday I got hit by a virus took out all my pictures of my MOM and of me and her I had on my puter. It was really hard, it took out all my Bible studies from Discipleship Training and my Outlook Express mail and now i can't get it back because I have a Windows XP Professional and nobody supports that anymore. My Microsoft Essentials has captured 3 more Trojans over the weekend and got rid of them. I didn't know people could be so harsh to hit some weakling like me and destroy everything they had worked for. Wow, all i can do now is pray you guys will be safe and pray for the ones who did this. I have to get my Microsoft Word back so I can make my notes and write letters now. Wow! RTR!

How did you find out it was a virus?

The guy that I took it to said it was. Also SC, my Microsoft Essentials Protection grabbed 3 trojans yesterday. I couldn't believe it. But, if it wasn't a virus SC do you have an idea what might have happened? I know your pretty well up in the knowledge of this stuff. I just wish i could get my Outlook Express back but they say the Windows XP Professional they don't support anymore, whatever that means. RTR!

It sounds like it was indeed a virus.  That could also be what was causing your other problem with the missing letters.

Unsupported means that Windows XP is so old that Microsoft doesn't deal with it any more.  If you have a problem with it, they won't help you.

Ok thanks SC. Hey what would be a system you would recommend that someone would support? RTR!

If you are buying a new system I would recommend an Apple computer.  They are a little more expensive but they don't have nearly as many problems as the Windows machines.

But you don't really have to buy a new machine.  You should just be able to install a new operating system on your current machine.  I would probably try to round up a copy of Windows 7 and put that on there.

It looks like Windows XP can still be installed and activated, so if you still have your CD and serial number for that you can put that back on there for free.

Please let me know before you spend any money on anything and I will be glad to advise you on how to get the most bang for the buck.  You might be able to get Windows 7 for a pretty good bargain since it is no longer the latest version.  Ask your friend at the computer store if he has an OEM license of Windows 7 for a refurbished computer.

Hey SC he said he could do my puter tomorrow that Windows 7 would be 70.00 I don't if that is good or bad, but my next question would be should I use Google Chrome on that system or just go with whatever is on it. I know CRS is going to be made my homepage no matter. RTR!

I would put google chrome on there.

$70 is not too bad for Windows 7.  However you can probably get a pretty decent used computer off of e-bay for about the same or maybe less, and it will include Windows 7.  How old is your computer?  What kind of computer is it?  There are a lot of used Dells on e-bay that are pretty good machines.

If your machine is pretty good and only a couple of years old, then I would say have him put Windows 7 on there.  On the other hand, if it is a really old machine, you are probably better off buying a used one off e-bay that is only a few years old.  I'm guessing that it is a really old machine since it had Windows XP on there.

It was rebuilt about 2 years ago. He said he used the shell and all things were brought up to date. I know it has 465 GB. Past that I am not much knowledgeable. RTR!

It sounds like it is worth keeping then.  My advice would be to spend the $70 and just go with Windows 7 then.
