Title: Coach Johnson Looking to Add 3 More Recruits
Post by: Marshal Dillon on April 17, 2015, 10:20:00 PM

I had not heard about D. Mitchell.

Quote
The goal, Johnson said, is to add three players in addition to incoming freshmen Donta' Hall and Brandon Austin, who have both already signed letters of intent and financial aid agreements.

Quote
Alabama returns just seven scholarship players from last year's team that finished 19-15.

Leading scorer Levi Randolph and guard/forward Rodney Cooper both graduated. Starting point guard Ricky Tarrant and rising sophomore Devin Mitchell recently received their releases from the program and will transfer, and Johnson indicated Dakota Slaughter will not play next season despite having one more season of eligibility.

Mitchell transfer was announced earlier this week.  It kind of sounded like CAJ had told him not to expect much playing time.

In Devin Mitchell's interview with AL.com earlier this week he said he and CAJ met twice and mutually agreed it would be in his best interest to transfer.

Mitchell did not show me much. With all our injuries he still could not find any playing time. When he was in the game he stood on the perimeter and passed the ball around. I can only remember a couple of meaningful baskets he made all year.

What little I know about him he seemed like a good kid. (All of Grant's recruits were good kids) I wish him well and home he finds a school that works out for him.

That was the standard Grant offense he was playing, that or dribbling around till there were 8 seconds or less to run a play.

What CAJ does with these three remaining schollys will tell us something.  If he gets three good ones who are ready to play at SEC level, it could be interesting next BB season.

There are not a lot of unsigned players left. Most SEC level talent signed in the early period. I am hoping for a transfer that can play right away or a JUCO player. I also think one of the scholly's will go to a transfer that has to sit a year. Maybe the guy from Memphis.

Well probably the SEC-ready JUCOs are signed too.  CAJ may have to take one or two of the 'best of the rest', including a big man, to get things going.  Still, I think whatever he gets done will tell us something.

Hope so, we need another small forward.

Alabama will host Memphis transfer forward Nick King on an official visit the weekend of April 24, AL.com has confirmed.

Quote
King is a former high-profile recruit from Memphis. The 6-foot-7 King started seven games as a sophomore for the Tigers, scoring 7.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. He scored 16 points with seven rebounds in the opener against Wichita State, but played 18 minutes per game during the season.

Alabama has shown interest in former VCU signee Tevin Mack, who was granted a release after coach Shaka Smart left for Texas. Mack is a 6-foot-6, 185-pound four-star small forward from Columbia, S.C.

New coach for Bama.

Quote
Avery Johnson's Alabama staff picked up a big piece Sunday afternoon.

Bob Simon, an assistant at Providence, will join Johnson as the Crimson Tide's associate head coach, AL.com confirmed. He joins Antoine Pettway on Johnson's staff that they're shooting to complete this week.

So...what do we know about this new assoc HC hire?  I like that he's from a BB conf - Big East -- and that he's not from the SEC.  Should broaden our recruiting area.  But I know nothing more about him.  Any thoughts?

“Avery knew Bob could recruit nationally and that was enough to really interest him,” Providence coach Ed Cooley told the Providence Journal on Sunday. “Bob went down there and felt really wanted and I know he’ll be getting a nice raise. It was something he felt he couldn’t say no to.”

Despite coaching in the Big East, Simon has recruited extensively in the South and has been involved with top 2016 recruits including Josh Langford of Huntsville and Kobi Simmons of Atlanta.

This article about Bob Simon by the Providence Journal sounds like they hate to see him go. They thought highly of him as a national recruiter.

Quote
Bob Simon, the Friars’ associate head coach and a valued recruiter, has been hired by new Alabama coach Avery Johnson. Simon has been friendly with Johnson since he coached with the New Jersey Nets and the Crimson Tide coach took note of Simon’s reputation as a national recruiter.

“Avery knew Bob could nationally recruit and that was enough to really interest him,” said PC head coach Ed Cooley. “Bob went down there and felt really wanted and I know he’ll be getting a nice raise. It’s something he felt he couldn’t say no to.”

Asked how much of a hit Simon’s loss is to his staff, Cooley said “I’m happy for him. He’s been with me for nine years. He’s ground out a lot of recruiting battles. We’ll miss him.”

A transfer pick-up for CAJ?

Cecil tweeted out a link about this guy as soon as the Simon hiring was announced, with a "Not saying, just saying."

Honestly, it doesn't look there's much to get excited about with the guy other than being 6' 9".  10 points and 4 rebounds a game with inconsistent production? This is who is going to get us moving in the right direction?
