State I think they knew by January they would be dumping him. They were able to talk to Howland early since he was not coaching. St. John's could do the same with Mullins. I think it would be funny if Mullin told St John's to go pound sand. They haven't been relevant since Lou Carnesecca was their coach and Lavin brought them back to being respectable. The word is that St John's pretty much told Lavin to look elsewhere, feeling that Mullin was a sure thing to come in and take over the program.
