The Baltimore Ravens announced Friday that they are releasing backup nose tackle Terrence Cody, who is under investigation for animal cruelty.

It was a week ago when Ravens coach John Harbaugh said the "threshold of tolerance" had changed after five players were arrested last offseason.

According to Cody's agent, Peter Schaffer, Cody took his dog to a veterinarian for treatment and the pet subsequently died.

"If the dog was being treated cruelly, why take it to a vet?" Schaffer said in a telephone interview. "When the dog passed away, Terrence was in tears."

Schaffer called the investigation "shameful."

"It's not even a story. It's a joke," Schaffer said. "If he wasn't a professional athlete, this would never have happened."

I hope Cody's agent is right and he is being falsely accused.

There is something going on with this story that just doesn't add up. ???

I'll be honest here. I am a HUGE Ravens fan, but something definitely isn't right. I wonder if this was just an excuse to dump an under-performing player and to save a little cash at the same time. The signs were all there that TC was not going to be re-signed, not with the way Brandon Williams played this season. So, here some potentially damning news, cut him to save some cash to put it toward another free agent this season. Besides, this also makes the front office look proactive after they screwed it up with the Ray Rice issue last year.

But the story says his contract had expired and they weren't going to renew it. They were rid of him - they didn't need a reason or excuse. The story speculates that they were trying to avoid the appearance that stye were hushing up more bad behavior among NFL players. If this turns out to have been nothing, I'd sue the Raven's as for defamation.

I doubt Cody ever beat any dogs except for this one...

The indictment included 15 criminal charges, but none of them are related to dog fighting. The charges included seven involving a bullmastiff named Taz that died, two of which are felonies. Six of the counts involve an alligator, and two are drug charges.

The indictment alleges the abuse took place between Dec. 19 and Jan. 19 and says Cody intentionally tortured and inflicted unnecessary suffering on the dog, then "intentionally cruelly" killed it. It also alleges Cody did not provide the dog with proper food, water, veterinary care, space and shelter.

The drug charges include possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia, which the indictment describes as a gas mask with smoking attachment, three glass smoking pipes and a smoking device, and possession of at least 10 grams of marijuana.

Thanks for the update 2, but this stuff is really disgusting. I wonder if 99 knows more since he's up there.

Maybe he'll report in this morning. Cody is a Bama hero. This breaks my heart.

I know about as much as you guys do. The talking heads here are divided on whether he committed a crime or whether he was merely trying to get treatment for the animal.
