Title: UNC report finds 18 years of academic fraud to keep athletes playing
Post by: Marshal Dillon on October 22, 2014, 06:34:44 PM
Let me guess, Dean Smith, Butch Davis, & Roy Williams knew nothing about this. Read entire article, fascinating.

Chapel Hill, North Carolina (CNN) -- For 18 years, thousands of students at the prestigious University of North Carolina took fake "paper classes," and advisers funneled athletes into the program to keep them eligible, according to a scathing independent report released Wednesday.
"These counselors saw the paper classes and the artificially high grades they yielded as key to helping some student-athletes remain eligible," Kenneth Wainstein wrote in his report. He conducted an eight-month investigation into the scandal, which has plagued the university for nearly five years

Oof. That is heavy stuff. If the NCAA actually did its job, UNC wouldn't be able to offer schollys or play in any postseason for the next 100 years.

Three years ago we all chimed in when the story broke.
The faculty at UNC were determined to get to the bottom of the scandal and clean it up.  They did.  Here's what was said back then:

"The administration at UNC now is embarrassed by this mess and want it erased.  That's why I see a clean sweep; faculty, administration, coaches, and players involved will be dismissed.  I'm surprised it hasn't started yet."

So which big-time administrators were fired like the President, Chancellor, Provost, VP of Student Affairs, Dean of Academics, etc.? My guess, no one.

Carol Folt, who took over as Chancellor at UNC last year, wouldn't identify the terminated employees or those facing disciplinary review...
Quote
"I think it's very clear that this is an academic, an athletic and a university problem," Folt said....

Beth Bridger, one of the former football counselors named in Wainstein's report, was fired Wednesday as an academic adviser for athletes at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington....

I can think of a couple of SEC schools that this should have happened to. ;)

Like I said, no one important has been fired, just lower level folks like counselors. Plus, the Chancellor believes Roy Williams when he says he knew nothing. Isn't that sweet? Just another whitewash which doesn't touch any higher ups. What a shock!

The President of UNC, the Chancellor of UNC, and the UNC Head Football Coach all resigned or were fired since the story broke.

A PowerPoint presentation football academic counselors gave to the football coaching staff in the fall of 2009 — when Crowder was retiring — was the clearest piece of evidence Wainstein and his team collected that demonstrated coaches' knowledge of and participation in the athletes' academic misconduct.

"(The counselors) were painfully aware that Crowder’s retirement would require the whole football team to adjust to the new reality of having to meet the academic requirements with real academic work," the report said.

"(The counselors) conveyed this point loud and clear in a meeting with all of the football coaches in November 2009."

A PowerPoint slide included in the report was titled “What was part of the solution in the past?” and listed the ways players were able to avoid doing actual work in these classes, including not having to meet with professors, go to class or stay awake.

“THESE NO LONGER EXIST,” the bottom of the slide said, alerting the coaches.

The presentation also showed a breakdown of a few players’ GPAs in the paper classes versus traditional courses.

“The average (Afro and African-American studies) paper class GPAs for these players was 3.61 — far higher than their average GPA of 1.917 for their other classes,” the report said.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees Wade Hargrove will form the search committee for Thorp’s replacement. During this search, the search for the new provost to replace Bruce Carney will be put on hold, and plans will be released within the coming days about any changes in Carney’s plan to step down, if any.

Hargrove said in an interview that he and members of the board have spent the last day attempting to dissuade Thorp from stepping down.

“It’s a sad day for the University,” Hargrove said. “The chancellor has inherited a set of problems, not of his making, and has done an exemplary job in trying to address those problems in a thoughtful and deliberate manner. We will miss his leadership greatly.”

Thorp said he will return to the faculty, and hopes to teach chemistry as well as continue some of the entrepreneurship classes.

Poor baby stepped down and probably has to live off $200,000 plus, not to mention a nice retirement. No mention of the UNC President. Did I miss that? Like I said, a whitewash.

It will kill UNC to give up 3 basketball National Championships. I expect them to fight that tooth & nail & work a deal with the NCAA behind closed doors to keep them. Plus, Roy Williams knew nothing.

It's taken 2 years, but the hammer is coming down on UNC.
"UNC slapped with 5 NCAA violations over academic scandal."

It will be interesting to see just what sanctions will be imposed. Either the NCAA will continue to show its weakness, or they will try to boost their image by making an example of UNC.

If nothing happens to Roy Williams, then like I keep saying, it's a whitewash. If a criminal investigation for fraud is going on, then some folks could go to jail for lying. Plus, are the feds investigating the fraud since tax dollars must be involved? Fascinating case. Chech, thanks for reviving this thread, good stuff.

Wainstein's October report found problems running from 1993 to 2011 and affecting more than 3,100 students, with athletes across numerous sports accounting for roughly half the enrollments in problem courses.

If the Feds get involved there would be jail time for lying and also for the crime for whoever did it at the time unless they are deceased. I think I am right? I always respected Dean Smith so I really hope he is not a part of this fiasco. RTR!

At a minimum they need to vacate all wins during that time frame. Remove championship, elite 8, sweet 16 and all NCAA banners fro those 18 years. They have vacated wins from other programs for much less. I am referring to basketball but this spanned over an entire athletic program. IMO this is every bit as bad as what SMU did to get the death penalty.

EXACTLY!! I just don't think the NCAA will do it unless it was an SEC or Big 12 team. Here's some of what UNC could lose since 1993.

BASKETBALL:

9  ACC Tourney Titles
8  FINAL FOURS
3  National Championships

BASEBALL:

2  ACC Titles
6  College World Series Trips

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

1  National Championship

FIELD HOCKEY (Women)

7  ACC Titles
5  National Championships

LACROSSE (Men)

3  ACC Tourney Titles
10 NCAA Tourney Trips

LACROSSE (Women)

1  ACC Title
1  National Championship

SOCCER (Men)

2  ACC Tournament Titles
5  College Cup Trips
2  National Championships

SOCCER (Women)

16 ACC Tournament Titles
11 National Championships

GOLF (Men)

3  ACC Titles

WRESTLING

9  ACC Titles

HANDBALL (Women)

4  National Championships

HANDBALL (Men)

3  National Championships

UNC is in big trouble, but they will slither out of any really major penalties IMO. Basketball could tke the biggest hit, though.

Okay, we'll cut them some slack. I never even knew they had an NCAA Championship for handball. Do we give field hockey a break, too?

The fact they are call Tar Heels is especially appropriate. This is a VERY sticky situation.
