I have never understood why so many hate Verne & Gary Danielson. It seems so over-the-top.

Not so much hate I would guess, but Verne is very prone to making mistakes with names and other things. Gary Danielson is actually a very knowledgeable Color Analysis.  But  I would think their are times that with their obvious biased against Alabama broadcasts got a lot of folks upset.  :dunno: js

I agree. I wish they would replace Verne but I can tolerate him. I actually like Gary Danielson a lot.

And Eli never makes mistakes? I have no idea what "obvious bias" you are talking about. If you mean they criticize a play as a bad idea or other negative observations, ALL analysts do that. I guess Tide fans prefer they yell Roll Tide and suck up like Eli. Eli is paid to suck up to the Tide, national announcers are not. Verne is a decent guy who loves sports and Danielson has excellent insights. i remember when he was an NFL QB with the Lions. He's an easy-going guy who knows football. Eli provides zero insights into the game, doesn't give yardage & down, and gets over-excited on a 2 yard run by the Tide. I remember fans being upset with Finebaum when he pointed out what an idiot and out-of-touch coach Shula was, even though he was right. They accused him of being an Aubie. That's how fans think, if you say something negative about your team, you are biased.

Both Verne & Gary talk too much.  Try to be too cute.  We can see the game for goodness sake.  The need to add meaningful content to coverage and not just add vocal clutter.

But then this could be said about most announcers.

My biggest issue with them is that they like to stir up controversy when there is none.  Sometimes it is against Alabama and sometimes it is in favor of Alabama.  I don't see a bias, they stir the pot equally for all teams.  When I am watching a game, I don't need the announcers making trouble where there is none.

I think you have made a key observation. Announcers are human and just like us, fans. We stir things up when nothing is really there. The announcers are huge fans, just like us. They follow many sports, like some of us do, like the NFL, MLB, college basketball, etc.

Brad Nessler and Todd Blackledge are the best team on TV right now, IMO.  And it isn't even close.  Herbie is pretty good, but they need to find him a better partner.  I haven't really seen much of him and Fowler together yet, but Fowler has to be a huge improvement over Brent Mushsfhrfdkjgburger.

I like the fact that Verne gets excited on big plays. Yeah, he butchers names, but we all know who he is talking about. Gary is a spot on color guy. I have no problem with them, unless we're losing, then they're just irritating. But those occasions are very rare.

I like Verne and Gary.  It's not like the old days of Keith Jackson and Frank Broyles, but it good enough.  I usually turn on the radio and hear Eli on big plays (radio delay makes it happen).

Another radio station to try for the game if WEIS fails: http://tunein.com/radio/The-Ump-730-s23393/

You hit the nail on the head there. I was just saying that if you ask people why don't like to listen to Verne & Gary that is the answer you will get. They say that they are biased in the way they talk about the team. Personally if I had a choice of people to listen to call the game it would have been John Fourney. I always loved to hear him call a game.

John Fourney was great. I really enjoyed listening to him.

I remember him walking to the microphone during a nighttime Homecoming Pep Rally (1969?).  It was on the Library steps, facing the Quad.  He took the microphone, and in his big, distinctive voice said: "Hello Alabama fans across the state and across the nation."

The place erupted in cheers!

I can't stand Gerne and Varry.  I have seen several incidents where Varry incorrectly analyzed a play immediately following the play then to have it replayed and he describe what he had just said while the opposite actually happened.  It happens to often IMO to simply be a mistake.  I think dimentia has set in on both of them personally.

Boy, did you just bring a bunch of great memories flooding back to me. He was perfect and truly a voice for the Tide.

John Forney was great. That was back when 2-3 games a year was televised. all others you either went to the game or listened on the radio. Doug Layton was his partner and he was good too. Jerry Duncan was on the sideline. Great memories from that radio crew.

Hey now in all fairness I forgot Mr. John the other day on my post about Keith Jackson and what a team those 2 would have been. Wow! RTR!
