Title: Why is This Head Coach Getting an Extension?
Post by: Marshal Dillon on August 28, 2014, 11:35:46 AM
He's about to turn 68 and has been slipping the last 5 or so years. Why is it these fans and administrators never learn. This is Joe Paterno & Bobby Bowden all over again.

In a press release, Virginia Tech announced that long-time head coach Frank Beamer has signed a two-year contract extension.  Beamer is now signed through Jan. 1, 2019.

Beamer earned approximately $2.54 million in 2013, making him the fourth-highest paid head coach in the ACC.  There’s no word on whether the extension includes a bump in pay.

The 67-year-old Beamer — he’ll turn 68 Oct. 18 — is getting set to enter his 28th season as head coach of the Hokies. He was also a football player at Tech in the mid- late sixties.

He is an institution within the institution

BeamerBall has clearly seen its glory days come and go.

What are your state retirement benefits after 30 years of service compared to 28 years?  Two years can make a lot of difference on the annuity calculations.

Also, in order to replace Beamer Vatech has to convince someone to move to Blacksburg.  I love western VA.  However, I can think of many better places to live than Blacksburg.

They have a rabid fanbase and great support for the program, but when you get down to it Vatech is the awbarn of Virginia.

So are you saying that Virginia would be the "Alabama" of that state?  IMO, Va Tech is far better than the Cavaliers.

About two hours before kickoff Saturday night, Virginia Tech Coach Frank Beamer went straight from the team bus to the south end zone at Ohio Stadium. Still wearing a blue sport coat and tie, he gazed up at the rows of empty bleachers and watched the Buckeyes walk to their locker room. He looked down the sideline where NBA superstar LeBron James and his entourage would soon congregate.

Over the course of 28 seasons and 225 career wins at Virginia Tech, Beamer had never been to this college football cathedral before. By the time he walked off the field just before midnight, his first trip to Ohio State had become a memorable one.

You make some excellent points. The key is can he continue to have the team play like they did against Ohio State, or was it a fluke since OSU was using a freshman QB?  Plus, they do not play Clemson or FSU in the regular season which can obscure how good they are. They do have games against E. Carolina, Miami, N. Carolina, Pitt, & BC. Not exactly an earth-shaking bunch.

Yeah, hard to know how good they are.  I'm hoping that they're just good enough on one day to beat FSU.

At least, for now, it looks like a pretty good investment.
